Have you tried using Gparted?

If the drive is found by Pmount, Gparted should see it.
In Gparted.
Select the floppy drive as the device to look at.
Format.
It has been a very long time, but I seem to remember you need to format a floppy as fat 16.

This may work.
(This assumes the floppy drive is dev/fd0)

Fat16 filesystem --> mkfs -t msdos /dev/fd0

Ext2 filesystem --> mkfs -t ext2 /dev/fd0

root# mkfs

Usage:
mkfs [options] [-t <type>] [fs-options] <device> [<size>]

Make a Linux filesystem.

Options:
-t, --type=<type> filesystem type; when unspecified, ext2 is used
fs-options parameters for the real filesystem builder
<device> path to the device to be used
<size> number of blocks to be used on the device
-V, --verbose explain what is being done;
specifying -V more than once will cause a dry-run
-V, --version display version information and exit;
-V as --version must be the only option
-h, --help display this help text and exit

Thanks musher0 & Bigpup... Hmmm maybe I should have worded differently..

Why is there no menu entry to click for formatting a floppy disk (3-1/2" - fd0)?

MS Window users coming to Artful are not likely to use terminal-commands to do such a simple function.

The menu function for formatting a floppy disk has been in puppy since forever... Puppy is supposed to make things easy for those coming to Linux especially with older computers.

Seasoned-Puppy people sometimes tend to forget what it was like when we first got into Linux from MS? What a mess huh? no one could ever learn this stuff?

Let's try to keep it simple for the new linux members... give them something to click on in the menu.

I would bet Linux users are part of the swarm of bees installing , all year long, last Linux versions released. Windows users are searching for an OS to replace Windows, not to disable it as soon as installed. IMO of course. Perhaps i am wrong.
Windows users can trust skamilinux team to help them for hungarian version (Murga forum, Facebook, and S-kami hungarian forum) What a lucky man the hungarian user is !

Bruce B's pet was nice find. I took a look at its contents. I'm guessing. But perhaps all that is needed to make it work with current Puppies is to edit the "stanzas" Bruce provided in MENU.LST. For example, Bruce provided

title Puppy (type 1) - hda1
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram PFILE=pup001-none-262144 PHOME=hda1
initrd (hd0,0)/image.gz

While a current Puppy could use:

title Xenialpup (sda1)
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz
initrd /(hd0,0)/vmlinuz/initrd.gz

Other 'kernel arguments' might be possible. But, having neither a floppy-drive port nor a floppy-drive, I have no way of testing any of the above.

I have pulled this format floppy from out of artful puppy.
If you alter the .desktop file entry from No display=true to false, then it will show in the menus under System after a fixmenus
I've attached a .pet.

Boots and runs cleanly, sound, SNS connection, overall video performance seems fine. Slimjet Version 17.0.3.0 running as spot from SFS with the profile on an EXT2 data partition as usual. Posting from it. The kernel reports spectre 1 and 2 mitigation, but meltdown vuln. Is a 32 bit kernel vulnerable to meltdown? Way beyond my pay grade. Just to exercise it a bit I set up the same mods I use in ArtfulPup to integrate pcmanfm, extended rightclicks, and integrate it with the system trashcan. It's all working and I haven't killed bionic yet. Two quirks noted. The extra pts,sys,floppy and proc icons are showing in the sidepanel on pcmanfm (on my plate, not the beavers) and I have to remember how I dealt with that and glxgears reports the following:

So far I see nothing in dmesg or the Pup-Sysinfo reports that illuminate that. Both say the intel i915 is being used and there are absolutely no warnings or errors at all in dmesg.

This is probably an Ubuntu issue with libva-* libraries. They have been updated to libva-*2_2* but in some dependencies they appear as libva-{,2}*
Hopefully will be fixed before 18.04 release.

BTW kodi starts after libva-x11-2_2 installation though in my VM fails to get screen settings from xrandr and crashes.

BTW2 compton menu icon appears to be missing

Manual frugal install to 32 GB Flash Drive. For an alpha release, it's working great.

I normally don't use fdrv's, as I manually load the required firmware for my Intel 7260 & 7265D wifi cards. As an alpha, I used the fdrv to test. The fdrv contains iwlwifi-7265D-10.ucode and iwlwifi-7260-10.ucode firmware versions. For the 7265D card, the start up checking commences looking for iwlwifi-7265D-26.ucode and fails to load after checking for version 17. I manually loaded iwlwifi-7265D-22.ucode, wifi connection is now successful.

I haven't tested with the 7260 wifi card yet, but believe it may end similarly.

Downloaded your alpha beaver and made a manual Frugal install.

Yes, I have too many partitions with fourteen on each of two hard-drives

, but on starting up UBB-alpha, the second column of partition icons on the left side of the monitor bundled the 'overflowing' drive icons at the bottom of the column. A third column was needed for the final few drive b partitions.

However..... I want to display my drive icons across the bottom of my (rectangular) monitor where they'll fit in one or two rows.
Trying in UBB with the previously working 'normal' desktop tool, and setting the drive icon location to 'bottom', only drive b icons moved to the bottom, drive a icons stayed as a left-side column (screenshot).

For 'fun', I tried to set the b drive icons to the right side and leave a wide gap so I could install pwidgets (as an sfs) to its usual place. Not quite successful (screenshot).

In artful, the drive icons display tool has worked for me in shifting the icons from your preferred location to mine (screenshot). The artful tool also let me remove the unwanted extra text detail (the partition label) that otherwise takes up too much pinboard space.

I see a change in this icon tool from artful to bionic (compare screenshots) which maybe an alpha-version 'bug'?

Even with my messy alpha-pinboard, I may try adding my usual packages to the UBB-alpha in the meantime, and see how they go - they are all fine in artful, so I'm hopeful.

By the way, does Ubuntu still do LTS versions (Long Term Support), and if so, which are they?

Looking at dmesg while chasing video stuff. On this ath9k hardware, I had multiple

Process '/sbin/crda' failed with exit code 254

messages. It is because the country regulatory domain isn't set. Setting the county regulatory domain either in quicksetup,manually using iw reg set, or in /etc/default/crda did not get rid of them. crda is enabled in this kernel and seems to need wireless-regdb so I installed it using the PPM and the error lines in dmesg are gone and iw reg get now returns a valid country code. So far as I'm concerned it's one more thing that could be set to =n in the kernel config. Anybody ever ever use it?

Still chasing the video problem I referenced above (openGL vendor not found or loaded). Mesa versions don't seem to have changed, haven't done a kernel swap yet.

Edit: Kernel swap back to 4.4.59 from ArtfulPup. No change in video behavior. Other than the glxgears oddity, it's running great! (stock kernel). CPU cryptohash and FPU rayracing both 10 to 15% better than ArtfulPup and GPU Drawing more than double the ArtfulPup performance! Same computer, governor etc. Back to back tests. However; scrolling is much smoother (no tearing) in all other pups where there isn't the 'double buffer' error message and direct rendering exists.

Edit: HP4500 networked all-in-one printer set up and printing. Used hpliplite-3.14.3 (new enough for my ooold printer) and it went smoothly with no hitches.

Yes, and this new one (Bionic Beaver) is one of them. The LTS versions are the releases in April of even numbered years. Lucid was 10.04, Precise was 12.04, Trusty (Tahr) was 14.04, Xenial was 16.04, and Bionic is 18.04.

Yes, it's an alpha release but I have to report one odd behaviour. I have frugally installed it to a usb hd sdb1 ext4 formatted. Grub4dos is installed on the main hd sda1 and on sdb1. I can boot bbpup through the sdb1's grub4dos but not through the sda1's grub4dos (error 2 processing the kernel line "bad file or directory type"). The hard disks are identified by uuid. One more thing: some iso files on sdb1 which I can mount in other puppies are displayed with a red triangle and cannot be mounted. The boot.cat in bbpup iso is also displayed with a red triangle. I'll investigate and report back. Perhaps a bad download?
