G'day Fred, While Updating This XenialDog via Both apt-get & Synaptic, I got a small maroon colored window, Warning: Less than 30MB Free Space on RootFS, Strongly Recommend...

This is a Frugal install, Dual Booting w/ M$ Virus Bait on a NTFS Partition, so I'm using a .dat Container File, that was 5 GB, so I Resized it to 8 GB & ReBooted, But it's Still there!... Furthermore According 2 Conky, Home it says 3.23GiB/3.38GiB 95%, Yet when I Check the Properties of My .dat Save File it Confirms that it's 8000MB!

I'm Confused! Confused

How can I tell how much Free space I Actually have? inside the Save / Container File, Please

& whY is there a Difference w/ Conky?

Thanx!

Hi Max !
Ran into similar Problems while trying to update Xenial Dog .Not enough Save Space .
I don`t know if it makes a Difference using changes.dat or changes Folder .
I am using changes Folder Porteus boot .

When in my case booting with default menu.lst Entry (means changes saved only on Demand ):

title XENIALDOG4 - porteus-boot - save on EXIT/DEMAND changes=/XENIALDOG4/changes folder
find --set-root /XENIALDOG4/casper/vmlinuz
kernel /XENIALDOG4/casper/vmlinuz from=/XENIALDOG4 noauto changes=EXIT:/XENIALDOG4/casper/ ramsize=80%
initrd /XENIALDOG4/casper/initrd1.xz

I ran out of Space (Red Warning ....not enough Space ....bla...bla... )

Solved it when booting with the following menu.lst Entry (does save changes automatically/immediately...... not on Demand/Exit ) :

title XENIALDOG4- porteus-boot - save direct changes=/XENIALDOG4/changes folder
find --set-root /XENIALDOG4/casper/vmlinuz
kernel /XENIALDOG4/casper/vmlinuz from=/XENIALDOG4 noauto changes=/XENIALDOG4/casper/ ramsize=80%
initrd /XENIALDOG4/casper/initrd1.xz

So with the second Boot Option did not encounter Problems with running out of Save Space .....because of....
In First Boot Option changes are still running in Ram til saved .......

In the second...... changes are directly written to changes Folder not using Ram Space .So in the second Method ,it is acting a bit like a Full Install ...although it is not .You are not running out of Save Space .

Not quite sure if it will work for you ,since i dont know the Boot-Method you are using .

Regards !

Hi Max,
(thanks backi !)
To add: indeed you are probably booting with the EXIT:/... parameter, which has the disadvantage of limited space. (the advantage is that the changes are in RAM, which makes the system run very fast)
It depends on your amount of RAM and by default the space you have is 60%
(you can increase by adding e.g. ramsize=90% to your kernel command line)
I have 2GB RAM, 1,2G (=60%) shows as size by df -h :
Code:
# df -h
....
aufs               1,2G      21M  1,2G   2% /
....

Similar conky shows at ROOT: .... (see pic below)
So, as backi said, boot without the EXIT: if you plan to use a lot of space.

Thanx Guys 4 your Help, of course it's My Understanding that I can't do the Save Directory unless I'm using a Linux File System, which I'm not by having a Frugal install Dual Booting w/ M$ Virus Bait!

it's My Preference 2 Keep the saveme.dat Container File small or under 5 GB Hopefully, by Keeping Most of My Files Outside of Home / Root, so that they're Accessible by M$ Virus Bait! My Plan is 2 Only Use the saveme.dat File 4 Applications installed Locally... Any Further Advice Welcome!

Hi Max !
Do not quite understand what you are looking for .
That much is clear :
Quote:
it's My Preference 2 Keep the saveme.dat Container File small or under 5 GB Hopefully, by Keeping Most of My Files Outside of Home / Root, so that they're Accessible by M$ Virus Bait! My Plan is 2 Only Use the saveme.dat File 4 Applications installed Locally.

Did you accomplish this ?Should be possible .

Why so many Boot-Options in your menu.lst ?.....and which ones you are using ?I suppose you do not use them all .......
Why not just only keep the ones you are using to make things more clear/clean/simple ?
So many Questions left.........one of them ......did you succeed updating your Xenial Dog via Method mentioned above ?

Regards !

Hey Fred & Backi & Co Please Accept My Apologies, I've been Busy & Distracted, But I Do Need 2 Get back 2 this issue & Fix it... things should be happening this week that may Require the Subject in Question 2 be in Healthy Condition, ie. No Errors or Warning Windows etc.

While I Do Appreciate All the Help & Support that yoU have Provided Me So far & sometimes I get Frustrated waiting 4 an answer, I Do Acknowledge that that could be a Symptom of Your part of the World Needing 2 Catch Up w/ Us Here in GodZone... ie. Time Zones. Laughing The Truth is that I was Oblivious 2 the situation that yoU were in Limbo waiting 4 a Response from Me, so again, I'm Sorry if I've offended or inconvenienced yoU.

I Wish We could All just have a Chilled Heineken & a Becks 2gether & it'll All be Better!

Btw Backi, that's a Good Question that yoU ask whY I've Got So Many Boot Options in Me Menu.list File, Many of which I Never use, most have been eXplained by Fred & yourself previously, so I can Certainly Reduce those easily, But Only After I've Fixed the Warning Window issue According 2 your Remedy Offered, I'll Let yoU know How it goes in the next few days, Thanx!

Hi hamoudoudou !
Looks like you are struggling with setting up Xenial/Debian Dog .

Will give you a simple advice how to install and and setup Xenial or Deb Dog .
Do as i did when installing XENIALDOG frugally to Usb-Stick or Ext Linux Partition.... just follow my Instructions .

Use a Usb-Stick or Partition best partitioned ext4..or ext3...flag it as bootable with gparted.
For Xenial Dog (works almost the same as in Puppy Linux )

1.Extract the Iso from Xenial Dog......the main Ingredient/Core/Machine is in case of Xenial Dog the "casper" Folder...for Debian Dog the "live" Folder .

Copy this extracted "casper" Folder (or "live" Folder in case of Deb Dog )to a new created empty Folder with the Name (for Example) XENIALDOG on your USB-Stick or Partition .
Apply Grub4Dos for this Usb-Stick...and/ormodify menu.lst Entry as follows .

Will Give you 3 Examples for a Grub4Dos menu.lst entry which will work similar/equal to Puppy Linux .

No need to create " changes " Folder.... it will be created automatically inside of "casper" when booting with Option 1 or 2.

Option 1 .
This Will only save on Demand or at Shutdown to " changes " FOLDER inside of "casper" .No savings during Session... except when using save2flash... (can be found in /usr/bin ......symlink it to Desktop ....and use it on Demand ).
or when Shutdown save on Demand .Changes will be saved to " changes " Folder inside of "casper" .

title XENIALDOG - porteus-boot - save on EXIT changes=/XENIALDOG/changes folder
find --set-root /XENIALDOG/casper/vmlinuz
kernel /XENIALDOG/casper/vmlinuz from=/XENIALDOG noauto changes=EXIT:/XENIALDOG/casper/ ramsize=80%
initrd /XENIALDOG/casper/initrd1.xz

Option 2.
When booting with Option 2 (no need to create " changes " Folder it will be done automatically created inside of "casper " when booting with Option 1 or 2 ).
changes will be saved automatically/immediately to to " changes " Folder inside of "casper" .
Can be useful if running out of ram when doing heavy Tasks for example when Upgrading .

2.title XENIALDOG- porteus-boot - save direct changes=/XENIALDOG/changes folder
find --set-root /XENIALDOG/casper/vmlinuz
kernel /XENIALDOG/casper/vmlinuz from=/XENIALDOG noauto changes=/XENIALDOG/casper/ ramsize=80%
initrd /XENIALDOG/casper/initrd1.xz

See the Difference
Option1. changes=EXIT:/XENIALDOG/casper/
Option2. changes=/XENIALDOG/casper/

But last not least :

Option 3.
Booting always fresh .....same as booting in ram with Puppy .

title XENIALDOG- porteus-boot Always Fresh
find --set-root /XENIALDOG/casper/vmlinuz
kernel /XENIALDOG/casper/vmlinuz from=/XENIALDOG nomagic base_only norootcopy
initrd /XENIALDOG/casper/initrd1.xz

There are some more Boot-Parameters and Boot-Options but the ones described above are the most commonly used ...for example running Things completely in Ram . But i am not experienced with this Methods ...so i will not comment .

So the same goes for Debian Dog .....except the "casper " will be replaced with "live" -----

"changes" Folder inside of "casper " or "live " can be easily back-uped and stored to a save Place and replaced in case something went wrong .
Hope it helps .

Regards !

backi i will study your information when really one or two hours to do it well, without disturb..
USB drive is formatted FAT32 7GB

What is Good, what is bad :
Boot in always fresh install, no trouble at all, ethernet connection yet done when i arrive on desktop
Bad
Rosy.dat save loaded at boot; the frisbee goes firts on eternet, then my wireless, advise wireless connected with IP wriiten, then a green windows shows again ethernet ip adress,
Firefox search and does not find puppy linux forum, where xenialdog stores topics.

label XenialDog Porteus Always Fresh
kernel /casper/vmlinuz
append initrd=/casper/initrd1.xz from=/ nomagic base_only norootcopy

label XenialDog Porteus in RAM (save in changes=/changes.dat file)
kernel /casper/vmlinuz
append initrd=/casper/initrd1.xz noauto from=/ copy2ram changes=/mnt/sda3/Porteus/changes.dat

label XenialDog casper-boot in RAM (save in casper-rw file or partition)
kernel /casper/vmlinuz
append initrd=/casper/initrd.lz boot=casper ignore_uuid cdrom-detect/try-usb=true showmounts union=aufs toram persistent

Saving makes trouble , everything nice always fresh boot

I often check for new arrivals on Distrowatch, and this week there is one called DeltaLinux. No info on what it is based on or if it is doing its own thing. Anyway downloaded the USB image to try it out, although it is quite large. Turns out it is based on XenialDog. Frisbee as network manager partly gave it away, but saw the XenialDog ascii logo as it shutdown.
