Pup_Slack_6.3.2 - fresh install to HDD. No other o/s present.
Have used the provided Firefox browser to download preferred Vivaldi (32bit Deb version)
No sign of it.. so download again.... further attempts get advice box stating 'already present'..
But where is it, or at least where should it be... and how do I get an icon onto desktop?
I fully admit to being a complete *nix noob.. all/any help appreciated!

First, this How To section of the forum is the place to post topics on how to do something, not to ask questions.
Should post questions or problems in the beginners or users section.
How to section is:
You know how you tell us.
A lot of deb packages are not going to be setup for how Puppy works.
They will install a program, but not always make a menu entry.
First try this to see if it makes a menu entry:
menu>Exit>Rebuild menu
If that is not an option in the Exit.
Open a console
Type
enter
If still no menu entry. The deb package did not install the needed files to make one.
To run with no menu entry.
Usually you can do a search, using Pfind program, and find the programs installed location.
Pfind search for vivaldi:
The main files are in the /opt/vialdi directory.
Navigate in the Rox file manager to /opt/vivaldi.
left click on the file named vivaldi.
That starts it for me.
To make a desktop icon.
First check in /usr/share/applications to see if there is a .desktop file for the program.
If yes.
Drag and drop that file to the desktop.
If no file in /usr/share/applications
Navigate in the Rox file manager to /opt/vivaldi.
Left click and drag file vivaldi to the desktop.
Now have icon on desktop.
Right click on desktop icon for file.
To change name -> edit item
To change icon -> set icon
vivaldi has some icons in /opt/vivaldi
Use one that is .png and at minimum 24 in size.
( normal icon set is located at /usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps )

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Usually the mods will just move the thread rather than deleting.
The information may still be helpful to you and to others.
Vivaldi is a nice browser and does work (or can be made to work) in Puppy.
It is a Chromium derivative and the latest versions tend to be very "bleeding edge", so a little more awkward to get going.
If you want to run the very latest Vivaldi I would suggest upgrading to a more recent Puppy such as Xenial (or Stretch) which has the required libgtk-3
In Slacko you may need to install the package gtk+3 from Puppy Package Manager.
Recent Vivaldi browsers also need recent NSS libraries. This can be done by upgrading your Firefox which contains these (and making sure they are found by Vivaldi).
If you are happy to run a slightly older Vivaldi, version 1.9 should work out of the box I believe.

I'll have a crack at installing Vivaldi 1.9... when you say OOB do you mean this will install&run as downloaded from Vivaldi website or do I have to do weird clever stuff like chopping up a man?.. If you are happy to run a slightly older Vivaldi, version 1.9 should work out of the box I believe. That'll do just fine... would go for Opera 12.18 but there's deffo no *nix version. I don't use any advanced features, I just like the layout of Opera/Viv..

It should be just a case of downloading the .pet and clicking on it or download the .sfs to a suitable location and load it using one of the tools in the usual way. You will have a menu entry for it appear in "Internet".
Desktop icon can be put on the pinboard in the usual way by dragging from /usr/share/applications (and rename).

Did you configure the Firefox browser to place downloads in a specific place? If not, you might consider doing so. Depending upon the browser in question, it's usually a matter of looking under 'Edit', 'Preferences', 'General' 'Downloads', 'Save Files to...' (select a known place). This makes finding downloads much easier. Hope that helps.
