Pidgin-2.11.0

#1 Post by OscarTalks »

I compiled Pidgin-2.11.0 from source in Wheezy.
This does seem to run in some other Puppies but always take precautions.
Some official Debian Wheezy libs such as gstreamer and farstream are included.
It works in Tahr but you are overwriting some of these libs. This may cause problems. It may be possible to move these libs to /usr/local/lib or something.

Voice and Video is enabled and all runtime dependencies are satisfied. Don't know if the full gstreamer and farstream packages might be needed for some of the protocols. These things use plugins which may be missing.

The build threw an SSL-related error when configuring with gnuTLS so I opted for Mozilla NSS (nss3 and nspr4) which is statically linked.

I also compiled the Skype Plugin (which I believe requires a running Skype) and also the Google Hangouts Plugin. I did manage to log in to Hangouts although it involves fiddling around a bit to get a "0auth" code rather than entering a password. A short youtube video shows how to do this. Both these plugins require libjson-glib so I compiled the static lib of that so we don't need to add the shared library.

So is Pidgin a program that people find useful and are these plugins worth having?

Could be handy for some Oscar.

I used to use icq and a thing called trillion yonks ago, with chatrooms for butterfly collecting, trailer trash 'ere, best burgers in the midwest etc. Which was fun.

But maybe everyone goes facebook, twitter now. Think some russians took over icq lol.

I still like pets, because some of those massive things in Tahr, never seem to work properly after sitting thee watching it fetch 250mb+ and then moans about something.

I think Phil 66 made a little post about how you can grab hundreds of those .debs and get them to all go in a folder to make a .pet, but I can't find it now.
