"This Browser does not allow you to watch this video..."

#1 Post by Sky Aisling »

Greetings,
Anybody else having trouble viewing videos on CNN and/or other media sites?
I get the black screen saying:
"undefined info: this browser does not allow you to watch this video, try to update your browser or use a different browser"

I've attempted viewing with SeaMonkey, Opera, Pale Moon browsers.
The Mozilla forum and other forums point to Adobe Flash issues.

I'm using Tahrpup 6.05 updated regularly through Quickpet update.
I'm using Shino Bar's GetFlash with no joy.

Is there a new GetFlash version or another .pet that addresses this issue?

Thank you in advance for responses.

PS - Net Neutrality was taken down yesterday, Thursday Dec. 14, 2017. Makes one wonder, are they cutting us out already?

Edit:

See http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 573#977573 for solution.

Videos on CNN.com are working for me.

They are playing in HTML5.

Using PaleMoon 27.6.2

Try disabling Flash Player in the browser.

I have no plug-ins at all in PaleMoon.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Thank you, bigpup

Does disabling all addons disable Flash?

Does it make any difference that PaleMoon is running a 32 bit version when the machine is 64 bit?

You have any kind of blocking add-on running in PaleMoon. Like add blocker or something?

I am using a 64bit version of PaleMoon in 64bit Xenialpup.

I wonder if CNN.com is now only going to work if you are using a 64 bit browser

I am looking, but not seeing any info on cnn.com about minimum requirements for browsers.

Does it make any difference that PaleMoon is running a 32 bit version when the machine is 64 bit?
No as long as the Puppy version is also 32bit.

However, even a 64bit Puppy can run 32bit software, if you have it's 32bit compatibility sfs package loaded, so it has what is needed for 32bit software.

PaleMoon.
Should be able to go into tools>add-ons> and find flash player listed under extensions or plugins.
Left clicking to highlight/select that listing, should offer a way to disable.

@SkyArising: the top Flash version on your link is not working with v1.6.1. I would try v1.7-1 here to fix it

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 815#960815

It should now show flashplayer-28 (I believe) now as the top link.

I tried to play the video that you show in your posted image of PaleMoon showing CNN.com

The one about the millions of crabs crawling allover.

That player looks like a special player from CNN.

Thank you, bigpup, Sailor Enceladus.

I am testing with three browsers; PaleMoon, SeaMonkey, Opera.

Testing with Adblocker on and off.

I am testing various news sites; CNN, The Guardian, Washington Post, NYT. All except NYT are giving me the black screen error message. Some videos on NYT ok, some not.

CNN video plays commercial ad fine before going to black screen.

Youtube plays fine with all three browsers.

I installed GetFlashPlayer v1.7-1 into Tahrpup 6.05 PAE 64 bit Kernel 3.14.56 regularly updated through Quickpet.

I notice in SeaMonkey a plugin called 'Shockwave Flash'.

There appears to be two pieces of Adobe coding, one called 'Shockwave Flash' and one called 'Flash'.

Could there be a conflict between Flash and Shockwave Flash running in the same browser?

So, CNN appears to run it's videos with it's own player? Must we sign up with CNN in order to view video?

No.
The videos are playing OK for me.
I am just going to cnn.com and clicking on them to play.

I see in your attached picture of what is in /mnt/home.

Do you have Google Earth sfs loaded?
If yes.
Try unloading it and see if that affects anything.

You posted about PaleMoon being 32bit.

Are you now trying to us a 64bit PaleMoon running in a 64 bit Tahrpup?

Used for test Slacko-700-RC3_2017-12-10 and Seamonkey-2.49.1

btw.
a quite inexact statement

No, still using 32 bit PaleMoon with 64 bit Tahrpup.

Unloaded Google Earth - negative.

How do I know if I have a HTML5 player?
A search for HTML5 in system files shows one file; /usr/share/geany/templates/files/file_html5.html

norgo, if you are referring to the and/or usage, I know it's no longer widely used in US english. But, I like it and have continued to use it.

No, still using 32 bit PaleMoon with 64 bit Tahrpup.

That could be the problem.

You need to be using the 64bit version of PaleMoon in a 64 bit Tahrpup.

You are not using the PaleMoon that comes installed in Tahrpup64 6.0.5?

HTML5 player is just the default player on many web sites.
Nothing you need to install.
The browser just nows how to use HTML5.

OK, I'll switch out to PaleMoon 64 bit.

The 32 bit version of PaleMoon is what came bundled with the Tahrpup 6.05 download.
I use the menu/internet option of 'updating Palemoon'.

However, the problem also exists on SeaMonkey 2.48 and Opera 45.0.2552.898.

Tahrpup 6.05
That is 32bit Tahrpup.

I am not in Tahrpup64 right now.

I will boot it up and see what I have in it.

I did look at the contents of the Tahrpup64 6.0.5 iso and it says PaleMoon is 64 bit. :?

Update:

Tahrpup64 has the 64 bit PaleMoon.
Using it to post this.

A 64 bit Tahrpup should have a save named tahr64save

Watch the messages as Tahrpup64 boots and see what save it says is being used.

No tahr64 save.

Here's what I'll test next:

I have downloaded tahrpup64.iso from http://puppylinux.com/.

I will burn a CD and experiment with tahrpup64.

If that solves the issue, I'll do a major cleanup of the machine, reset my save file and run with TP64.

@Sky Aisling:-

I don't understand some of your setup, y'know. You're running Tahr64 6.0.5, yes? So how come you're running my 32-bit Google Earth 7.1.2 package, which I built for Tahr 6.0.5 (32-bit)? :?

There is a 64-bit G.Earth package available.....

You seem to be running something of a mixture there. Which might be at the bottom of all this, TBH.

Might be just as quick to mount the ISO file, copy the contents across to your directory/partition, then simply run Grub4DOS. That's what I'd do.....and it's basically all the Puppy installer does in the long run.

It's what we call the 'quick'n'dirty' method. Works, though..!

Hello Mike,

Yes, you are observant. The setup seems mixed. That is why I'm going to start from scratch with the latest tahrpup64 and see if that cleans things up.
I'll install your Google Earth for 64 and any other coding that needs to be 64 bit if this next test proves good.

I'm fixing dinner now. So, it may be a while before I respond again.

Thank you for checking in.

PS - I've not had any major issues with the tahrpup that is on the machine now. The issue with the videos has occurred within the last year. I've been running Tahrpup for several years now.
