How Do I Recover a Corrupted, Encrypted Savefile? Subject description: A savefile became corrupted on shutdown |
|
How do I repair a corrupted, encrypted Tahr64 savefile on a USB stick?
Something happened during the last shutdown and now Puppy boots with a filesystem mounting error and fails to boot into X.
On boot, I am prompted to enter the encryption password, but then get the error:
General error mounting filesystems.
A maintenance shell will now be started.
CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system
Give root password for maintenance
(or type control-D tp continue):
It accepts the root password, but X fails to start and "xorgwizard" fails to run. I can mount the savefile from another running Puppy instance and the filesystem seems intact, but repairing the actual error is elusive.
The steps here (http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=41918) are comprehensive, but dated and don't solve the issue.

just a troubleshooting step can you boot pfix=ram (no savefile) with the current installation?
could you fsck on the partition using gparted?

The full syntax I have to use to boot puppy is:
puppy pfix=ram pmedia=usbflash
It doesn't seem to find the default sfs file when booting from USB. Go figger.
Anyway, gparted does not find any problems with the file system on the USB device, an ext4-formatted partition.
The encrypted savefile is not completely lost. I am able to mount it and extract the data, which I did. The USB drive has been in constant use for almost 2 years, and may just be on its way out. I'll just provision a new one and copy the data to it.
