I have a T10 iRiver 512 MB, but it is not recognized by Rox. It does not show up in MUT either. The device says "USB connect".
dmesg gives

Apparently iRiver uses MTP protocol. gPhoto2 supports MTP, so you can use gphoto2 to copy files to your iRiver. Install gphoto and libgphoto from petget.

Or a more radical approach is to change the iRiver's bios to turn it back into a standard USB mass storage device -

This alternative bios is OFFICIAL, so it shouldn't be risky.

Thanks.
I switched to UMS, and now everything is cool. Do you know what the best CD ripper for puppy might be?

Yes, PBcdripper by forum member plinej.
Menu > Multimedia > PBcdripper

For mp3 encoding, I believe it uses the highly regarded LAME library.

Apparently the latest iRiver firmware updater application supports multiple iRiver models, and allows the firmware to be changed from MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) mode to MSC/UMS mode. In MSC/UMS mode the device functions as a standard mass storage drive.

www.iriver.com > SUPPORT > Download

Later models of iRiver devices, such as the Clix 2nd generation, can be switched from one mode to the other in their menu.

If you want to keep your device in MTP mode, and manage your music with Windows Media Player (!?) then you will need gphoto plus libgphoto, as mentioned above, or libmtp.
I just had a look at libmtp now; it's a library plus quite a few commandline utilities. I cannot find any documentation, so it might be a bit difficult to set up.

A gui for MTP devices such as Gnomad2 might be a good idea -

I just compiled a Gnomad2 package, with libmtp-0.2.1 libraries.
I did not compile Ogg+FLAC support, since this would require the relatively large taglib library, and I don't think that many MP3 devices support Ogg/FLAC playback anyway.

Package available here -

Thanks, tempestuous. I have an iriver T10 but haven't had any trouble loading mp3 audio books into it so I didn't know all that. The last time I checked for firmware upgrades I didn't see anything mentioned about different ones and it looked like the one that was available required an internet-connected Windows computer to install.

Thanks so much for your post tempestuous. I was about to give up when I saw your post to make the player act like mass storage.

Thanks again

Dennis
