Firefox 57 (32-bit) no sound playing YouTube video

#1 Post by nubc »

What is the strategy for getting FF 56 to play YouTube videos? I install enough media player plugins until I gather a complete set of codecs?

And how could Mozilla release a browser that can't play YouTube videos?

If I get a HTML5 player to work, will I be able to use a downloader add-on?

I'm observing that if I install a good selection of media players, then YT videos will play in Tahr 6.0.3's FF 56. From Slacko 5.7's FF 45 I have the following plugins:
H.264 Video Codec
DivX Browser plugin
mplayerplug-in (gecko-mediaplayer)
QuickTime plugin
RealPlayer 9
Windows Media Player plugin

The bottom task bar needs a vertical black demarcation line between items (stark-blueish JWM theme).

One of my problems may be that FF56 needs a Pulse Audio plugin. I downloaded the latest from here:
https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/
but I have no idea how to make it work in Firefox. I extracted in from where it was downloaded, but nothing happened.

Tahr has VLC onboard, that should cover a lot.

Anyone know how to put a permanent Firefox launch icon on the JWM desktop?

Hi nubc. Read:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 839#965839

You can install apulse 0.1.10 from OscaTalks' rep:

Thanks, watchdog. XVkbd 3.3 virtual keyboard cannot enter a URL in address field of Pale Moon 27.6.0. Must type the URL elsewhere, then copy & paste to address field. Grrr

Hi in a greek forum slackware users sugest to do the folowing:in /home/user/ directory In puppy slacko it is /home/.usr/ directory which is hidden create a file and name it .asoundrc.The file should contain the following:

Code: Select all

pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
}

ctl.!default {

}
The solution is sugested by Dimitris Jemos who created slackel linux based on slackware.This solution worked for a user with no sound on youtube

watchdog,
I installed apulse-i686 from repo, and renamed it in user.js file, but still no sound. I uninstalled apulse from repo, and installed apulse 0.1.10 from OscarTalks, still no sound. There is a message with circling arrow on the YT player, "If the video doesn't start shortly, try restarting your device."

Have you copied the user.js file into the /root/.mozilla/firefox/xxxyyyzzz.default dir? Where xxxyyyzzz is the random code of your profile...

I installed apulse-i686 from repo, and renamed it in user.js file, but still no sound. I uninstalled apulse from repo, and installed apulse 0.1.10 from OscarTalks, still no sound.
Uninstall all of these.
Reboot.
Now only install the apulse 0.1.10 from OscarTalks.
Make sure to install the correct bit version (32 or 64).
Now I would try to copy in /root/.mozilla firefox's profile a file named user.js with the following content:

Code: Select all

// sound fix for alsa through apulse 0.1.10 :
user_pref("security.sandbox.content.write_path_whitelist", "/dev/snd/");
Reboot so it all gets saved and loaded at the correct time and place.

If still no sound.
Move the user.js file you made to the subfolder qbh6evhg.default.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

I have now tested, in tahr 6.0.6, firefox 52.5.0esr, and something is changed for sound fix in later firefoxs. Try the following user.js in the firefox's profile (and install apulse from OscarTalks' rep):

Code: Select all

// for using apulse with latest firefox
user_pref("security.sandbox.content.write_path_whitelist", "/dev/snd/");
user_pref("security.sandbox.content.syscall_whitelist", "/dev/snd/");
user_pref("security.sandbox.content.read_path_whitelist", "/dev/snd/");
It now works for me watching youtube. The prior fix is not longer working.

I was having the same problem. Just wanted to report that this fix worked for me with Tahr 6.05 and the new FF 57.0. Thanks

I take you're referring to the post by bigpup, not watchdog or nupogodi? I'll try installing FF57 again and see what happens.

OK, yours may have a different name.

/root/.mozilla/firefox
Look for a directory that ends in .default

Put the user.js file in that directory.

The user.js will probably need to be this one.

Code: Select all

// for using apulse with latest firefox
user_pref("security.sandbox.content.write_path_whitelist", "/dev/snd/");
user_pref("security.sandbox.content.syscall_whitelist", "/dev/snd/");
user_pref("security.sandbox.content.read_path_whitelist", "/dev/snd/");

Okay, I reinstalled Tahr 6.0.5, as well as Firefox 57. Everything is working fine except audio. I tried both codes for user.js, and the result is still negative. No audio.

Tahr 605 has default browser Pale Moon 25.8.1 (x86), which refuses to enable Adblock Plus because PM uses ads for revenue. Why would a Puppy dev use a browser with this policy? YouTube says this version of Pale Moon is obsolete. I can't upgrade Pale Moon because xvkbd won't work in PM 27. Great.

There's no recent Seamonkey in the updated repo.

Nothing like an mp3 player that keeps playing after the applet is closed.

What happened, has there been a falling out between Mozilla and Adblock Plus?

EDIT: I just customized Pale Moon to my liking, but there weren't a lot of choices.

I predict Mozilla Firefox will lose even more market share due to this unsupported switch to pulseaudio.

When I see this, I click the back arrow and click once again on the Youtube icon, and it always works the 2nd time. :D

I've customized Tahr 605 pretty much to my liking, and I could use it as my working OS, except that Firefox doesn't play YT audio. Apparently, the reason Firefox won't play YT audio is because the new audio format is pulse audio. The solution is to get FF to use apulse, which is what, an abbreviated alternative to pulse audio? Is pulse audio exclusively 64 bit, is that the problem? Because in a previous installation I installed pulseaudio from repo, and this had no effect on the lack of audio. The code in user.js redirects audio through apulse. I have the 4-line code entered, but still no audio. I didn't do something that others have done, what can that be? If I can get audio working in YouTube, I can start using Tahr 605.
