AfterStep & LXQT

#1 Post by labbe5 »

I installed AfterStep, a nice looking desktop environment. Actually it feels like a mix between a window manager and a full desktop environment, such as fvwm-crystal, so it is a nice fit for older hardware, such as my 2007 Toshiba laptop. Not much dependencies, and size is on the small side.

I use Debian Buster as my base OS, but it is available in standard repositories of Ubuntu 16.04 as well.

I use wdm as my display manager, very nice too, instead of xdm, or gdm, or plain startx.

i also installed lxqt-session, again a good fit for an older hardware :
LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-Qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment.

I am pretty sure Puppy could provide AfterStep instead of JWM for a more modern looking desktop environment, but Dog users can install it from repositories.
