Setting property "world - read" on files in webserver

#1 Post by Limbomusic »

Greetings and salutations fellow pups.

I have a webserver running puppy.
Sometimes if I copy a file to the webserver the propery "World - read" isn't set(?) - so
a user will get "404 forbidden" when clicking the file.

This happens only sporadically.
I have a bunch of computers running puppy and windows and I move files to and from the webserver all the time (webserver is shared via samba).

So - a couple of questions regarding this:
1. What could be the reason for a file suddenly missing the "world-read" tick in properties?
2. Is there a simple way (or a terminal command) for setting world-read permission/properties on all files in a folder?
(just right-clicking a folder and setting correct properties does not work)
- and is it possible to do this via another computer on the network?

Yes, using gftp is one way.

Upon further rethinking - I have come to the conclusion that I do NOT want to set up ftp on the webserver at all. Normally I HAVE complete access to everything via my lan - and I dont need ftp access. - any other input /suggestions / thaughts?

- and also - ...hm. Normally - like - I copy things to and from the webserver-machine ALL the time - and for 91% of the time - the file I put on there is downloadable by everyone - but then there SUDDENLY is a time where its "u dont have access" - so my original question still sort of remains.
- sorry for being a pain in the butt - but

Not a pain, an interesting problem.

When it happens, was the file uploaded to the server by another computer or what? I suppose there are logs somewhere.
