Just out of curiosity I took a look at http://gnubiff.sourceforge.net
Looks like 2.2.13 is the last version that works with GTK 2
I downloaded the source and this compiles OK (tested in Wheezy and Stretch)
Use ./configure --prefix=/usr --disable-gnome LIBS="-lX11"
(it throws an error if you don't add libX11 to the linker so the above does this).
Building this way gives you a package which doesn't need any extra libs.
The Wheezy build runs in Slacko 5.7 except for "no version information" warnings.
I expect a fresh compile in Slacko would remove those warnings.

Morning, Oscar.

Thanks for the info! My compiling skills are not good, I'll be the first to admit; I keep trying, but practice really doesn't seem to 'make perfect' for me...

I'll try that in 570 later on today. I can do 'stuff' like this if I know the magic incantation to use Embarassed , but it's working out the 'recipe' for myself where I usually seem to come unstuck! Shocked Even following the info provided with almost every source code package, I still usually manage to cock things up... Rolling Eyes

Hence why I often take the alternate route of 'adapting' one distro's package for use in another...and that leaves you at the mercy of whatever 'options' were originally compiled in by the previous builder/packager.

(*shakes head*)

Carry on regardless..!! Laughing

Now, then.....

With grateful thanks to Oscar's expert advice on the build 'recipe' (see above^^^; it's the one bit I never can get right), here's a re-worked package for the Slackos (560 & 570). It's a lot smaller than the previous one since, thanks to the 'magic' formula provided, it doesn't require all those Gnome-related libs'n'dependencies..!

http://www.mediafire.com/file/ymdobcbdg3gfzze/gnubiff-2.2.13-s14.0-i686.pet

(And Oscar was quite right, actually; I was under the impression that I had found the last GTK2 package.....but he must have dug a bit deeper than me. Either that, or he simply read the home page a bit more thoroughly..!)

If you've tried the previous package, you can uninstall that, and then install this one. Your settings will all be preserved in the /root/.gnubiffrc file.

I may re-build the package for Precise, and related Puplets; those repos aren't much longer for this world.....it's now a full six months since EOL, and Canonical are bound to 'pull the plug' with 'Artful Aardvark' heading relentlessly toward release date..!

Enjoy.

Have now put together a package for Precise 571 & derivatives. It can be found at Utilities->Gnubiff->2.2.13, at the link in my sig.

I grabbed the version from PPM (2.2.13). Seems to work okay after spending some time tweaking the options... just need to get a louder notification sound. :/

It did crash on me once, after I tried repositioning the window. I'd tried 255, 255, but that only moved it less than a quarter of a screen away from the top left corner. Then, it flaked out and crashed (disappeared) when I tried to interact with it. So, it remains in the top left corner, and haven't yet tried changing the position again.
