Puppy Slacko save file and folder disappeared

#1 Post by trelu »

Hi,
I've used Puppy Slacko for about three years. I currently use version 5.6, frugal install. Tonight after rebooting my laptop, I received the following error message from Grub4Dos: "Error 15: file not found". I thought this might be a problem with Grub4Dos itself, however after logging into a previous frugal install of Puppy (Slacko 5.3.3) which I had left on my hard drive, I've discovered that the Slacko 5.6 folder with the save file has completely disappeared from my drive!! I was using this install literally a couple of minutes before this happened (my laptop switched off due to the battery running out and I received the Grub4Dos message on reboot). I don't know how this has happened or what to do.
Could anyone please help me with this?
Thanks

What format is the hard drive partition the Slacko install was on?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Hi, the format is Ext4.

The only thing I can think that's happened is that I've somehow accidentally deleted the folder with the frugal install in, but God knows how I've done that without realising. If that's the case then I don't know how it kept on working until my laptop switched off when the battery ran out.

I am thinking maybe the ext4 file system has lost the info on the frugal install by the file info getting corrupted.

This is not suppose to happen with ext4, but who knows.
Something easy to check.

To check it and repair, you need to boot from a version of Puppy that is not on the hard drive partition.
The partition must be unmounted to do the check and repair.
(Slacko 5.3.3) which I had left on my hard drive
If this is on a different partition, can run Gparted from it.

This is how if Puppy is on a CD/DVD

Run the program Gparted and have it do a check of the hard drive.

To use Gparted:
Boot with the Puppy live CD
At the Puppy boot screen hit F2 key.
Use the boot option puppy pfix=ram.
This keeps the hard drive from being mounted.
Hard drive partition cannot be mounted for Gparted to work.

In Gparted
right click on a partition
Select check
If it finds anything wrong it will correct.

If you have more than one partition on hard drive
run a check on all of them.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Thanks for your help, bigpup. I tried what you said but Gparted didn't find anything wrong. Looks like I must have deleted the folder myself *massive-facepalm*, though still not quite sure how that happened. Fortunately I had a back up of my save file, although a slighly more recent one would have been better. I'll be more careful in future...
