Windscribe - VPN provider for Linux

#1 Post by labbe5 »

Note :

It is said that using a service for free means you ultimately are the product, so using free version of Windscribe may put you at risk of being monitored one way or the other.

Free version is limited to 10 GB of data, 1 connection and 8 locations and you need to provide a valid email address. Seemingly, free service is paid for by their pro version ($9.00/month with unlimited data, unlimited connections and 45+ locations). So for occasional user, free service is a rather good deal.

Moreover, they provide repositories for Ubuntu and Debian but limited to 64-bit OS :
Windscribe for Linux is still in beta. All versions are x64

https://windscribe.com/guides/linux

If you use Ubuntu (and derivatives) 14.04 up to 17.04, you are provided with a repository, as well as Debian 8 and 9 (and derivatives).

Note : Dog-based OS is the target OS (if you still wonder at this point).

You are asked to create a free account, then do the following in terminal for 16.04 :

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-key FDC247B7

echo 'deb https://repo.windscribe.com/ubuntu trusty main' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/windscribe-repo.list

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install windscribe-cli

windscribe login

windscribe connect

For help :
windscribe --help

There is one more interesting thing about Windscribe, it is their addon for Firefox :

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... indscribe/

Conclusion :
It is up to you to search the internet for Windscribe, read reviews, and make an informed decision about using Windscribe as your free VPN provider.
Makeuseof.com has it in their best VPN providers' list, together with torrent-friendly VPNs : http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/best-vpn-services/

More on browser addon :
Windscribe addon for Chrome, Firefox and Opera is working as a VPN, but only for your browser activity.

DNS leak test provides this information, once addon is installed :
104.254.92.90 none Amanah Tech Canada
which means dns resolver has been changed (before it was Google)
and IP address is changed too.

So Windscribe addon is working as intended as a VPN.

Have a look here for a chart comparing desktop app to browser addon :

A final note :
You must create a free account to use Windscribe addon. Installing it without being a registered user means you don't have VPN service.

Zenmate is another VPN for browser :

Meet R.O.B.E.R.T.

#2 Post by labbe5 »

Windscribe just got better with newest feature :Remote Omnidirectional Badware Eliminating Robotic Tool.

R.O.B.E.R.T blocks various malware, ad and tracking domains at the DNS level, on our servers. This has the advantage of working on all platforms, including our desktop apps and mobile apps.

Malware, phishing and botnets —this is the new default, currently enabled on your account. In this mode R.O.B.E.R.T will block hundreds of thousands of known malware distributing websites, phishing domains and domains used for botnet administration.

It is available to all users, free and Pro, however all other modes require a Pro account.

Use temporary email services like mailinator.com, mytrashmail.com, etc. While creating a free Windscribe account it will send a verification email, here we receive the mail in temporary email. Just verify the mail, that's it. Your free account is ready.

Need not give original mail id's.

If anyone use 30 GB for a month, register three free accounts in Windscribe, each offers 10 GB.

Thanks
