DD (openbox)/XenialDog General Discussion Thread

#1 Post by mcewanw »

For users of DebianDog only.

Note that this is a maintenance thread for already existing Puppy Forum created DebianDogs only and not intended for major new developments.

anikin comments are not welcome and should not be responded to or even read. Please remind me if I forget.

This thread IS NOT for XenialDog-related issues, since that is a separated puppified Ubuntu-live based project.

Some older debiandog info can be found via here: https://github.com/DebianDog

Newer Toni (saintless) DebianDog-related Retro Debian Sources github site under development here:

If we are going to be testing something, I think it ought to be the test version of DD64 Stretch.

The link to the original post is here.

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 422#950422

This is the download link and md5 file.

https://github.com/fredx181/StretchDog/ ... 4-TEST.iso

https://github.com/fredx181/StretchDog/ ... 4-TEST.md5

This is the bug that I found.

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 604#950604

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 577#952577

and Fred fixed it here.

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 725#952725

The fix is a modified initrd1.xz file, download it here.

The also much-needed "XenialDog Maintenance Thread" I opened was removed by someone.

Well, contrary to any alternative 'claims', all DebianDogs were community projects (so that includes XenialDog). But DD is based on Debian live and the other on Ubuntu live; there are many differences between these two live systems, so if only a DebianDog Project Maintenance thread was allowed on this forum there would be no suitable place for us maintaining XenialDog. I have personal work involved in both of these distributions and this is supposed to be an open-source forum allowing developers the resource to work on their projects.

I have no further interest in any arguments between Fred and Toni, but I use the operating systems I work on (and also my created_for_Puppy/DD/XenialDog bash/C/gtkdialog-based applications) and object to being prevented from working separately on XenialDog-related issues on this forum. As I say, all dogs are community projects; no-one can ask for that work to be locked or deleted without agreement from the other contributors.

William (site owner of https://github.com/DebianDog, which includes everyone's contributions to DebianDog and XenialDog}
-----

Am currently trying to separate out DD and XenialDog projects for obvious reasons but the lockout/deletion actions being taken by this forum are hindering that process and thus threatening further development - that is a misuse of forum moderator control power, which acts against the opensource community model.

Most of all of our work is released to the community under Open Source licenses - the only cost charged to the community (and forum) is that we be granted free access to develop our work. That has been denied - the open source community license terms thus become invalid (certainly morally) and all parts of our work may cease to be open-source since existing understood terms and conditions have been broken/invalidated.

I don't like to feel guilty for locking your and others work, William.
I asked ttuuxxx to reopen all locked threads started by me.
When he do it I will bring them up by quoting your post here.
Let the community decide what to do with these threads. I think opening new and new threads for the same project doesn't help anyone.
But you know very well all DebianDog, MintPup, XenialDog projects are non-free product and you know the reason for this. You brought this problem up pointing to unlicensed scripts I can't modify without Fred's permission. You can't turn them into community projects as long as this problem (unlicensed scripts inside) exists.
Still I'm glad you can see yours and others work in Fred's scripts today. You were smart enough to add your name as contributor in DD scripts. I and others were not that smart at that time ;)

Then you may as well use f---------------- windows. I don't believe you - its based on Debian and Ubuntu which are open source???

No use to deal with stubburn people but for anyone who cares about license and free open source work:

https://help.github.com/articles/licens ... epository/
You're under no obligation to choose a license. However, without a license, the default copyright laws apply, meaning that you retain all rights to your source code and no one may reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works from your work. If you're creating an open source project, we strongly encourage you to include an open source license. The Open Source Guide provides additional guidance on choosing the correct license for your project.
Do what you want as a community. My part ends with opening the threads.

Hi Toni,

A quick question: presumed all the obstacles (license, etc.,) have been resolved/eliminated - how long would it take you to get back to business and deploy DebianDog Stretch JWM/Rox in coordination with Fred and his choice - Openbox/Pcmanfm or whatever it is?

DebDog Jessie 2016-10-16

#12 Post by Ether »

.
Hello.

I would like to download DebianDog-Jessie-openbox_xfce-jwm-2016-10-16.iso but I can't find a download link that works.

I tried this link on four separate occasions over two days:

https://github.com/DebianDog/Jessie/rel ... -10-16.iso

... but the download always fails.

I know it's not my internet connection since I can download much larger files from other sites with no problem.

Is there an alternate link I can try?

Thank you.

That worked, no problems.

Is there a bug_fix / update squashfs I should also download?
Thank you.

Not a squashfs, but you may want to look here for some bug fixes:

Since this is the Debian Dog maintenance thread, I thought I'd do a little Debian Dog maintenance.

I've upgraded (apt-get update and apt-get upgrade) and remastered the Stretch Dog version that I referenced in the second post. I included new intrd1.xz file that fixed the bug. Other than that and adding a few desktop links, I made no changes to it.

See my prior post for information on the source of this version. http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 261#958261

While this is a test version Ive used it quite a bit and haven't noticed any real problems. It seems perfectly usable to me.

The only testing of the remaster itself was to install it from DD64 Jessie to a USB stick and see that it booted successfully and synaptic showed that it was fully upgraded.

The only feature it seems to be missing is the kernel upgrade script. I tried to install the one from Jessie Debian Dog 64. It seemed to install okay, but didn't find a new kernel. I think that is because it already has the newest kernel, but I am not 100% sure. I didn't include that in the remaster.

edit: links deleted. See link to new version below

edit: fixed link

edit: new version, see http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 812#958812

All my threads open with this message:
According to this post the thread stays open as a community project:

Anything more you like me to add in the first post I can do it in the next few days.

Sorry Anikin. I'm not interested working on Stretch at this time. Do what you like with the threads as a community. You are one of the first contributors to the project. Now is the time you and other contributors to get more involved.

All the best!
