Debian 9 "Stretch" released

#1 Post by anikin »

Debian 9 "Stretch" released
June 17th, 2017

After 26 months of development the Debian project is proud to present its new stable version 9 (code name "Stretch"), which will be supported for the next 5 years thanks to the combined work of the Debian Security team and of the Debian Long Term Support team.

Debian 9 is dedicated to the project's founder Ian Murdock, who passed away on 28 December 2015.

Interesting. If I build debian-stretch puppy now, does that mean it takes the stuff from Debian 9 "stable"?

Sailor,

Have a look at the right upper corner here: https://www.debian.org/ as of this writing it still shows Jessie as Stable. It could change any moment, though. I don't know how to setup repos in woof.

PPM Puppy stretch downloads Appas without binaries

"After 26 months of development the Debian project is proud to present its new stable version 9 " development is finished, now maintenance team will help users for troubles running it..
I am not sure, but it seems that PPM Puppy stretch downloads apps without binaries ..
I was just taking a glance at Puppy Stretch. Wait for more accurate comments. Perhaps apps were unfortunately incomplete. I will check again.
We shall wait that tests fully done before installing Strecth version for Puppy Linux. Please keep us informed when Puppies based on Stretch are fully serviceable. Merci :)
Is There a Puppy Jessie serviceable ? yes, pupjibaro jessie, by Josep2424.
Stretch bêta, for technicians.

Hello all.

What a strange request. Why? There is no need, IMO.

There is nothing offensive in either post, they both carry some info and
they are on topic.

Best regards.

Strange, but not surprising, musher0 doesn't have a mindset of a Debianist. He can only see what's on the surface :)

Seriously, though, I started this thread jumping ahead of myself. I was tracking the release online as it unfolded: https://bits.debian.org/2017/06/upcomin ... ch-fr.html I should have waited a little bit. The Debian website at that time still had Jessie as stable, now it IS Stretch. From this viewpoint those two posts DO seem to be out of place and misleading.

I don't see a problem, anikin.

I think it's even a good thing that you mentioned this transit to "Stable" in
this thread. Puppyists less familiar with the Debian cycle will now know a bit
more about it.

Hi !
Found this critical comment regarding Debian 9 Stretch on Distrowatch:

21 • Debian 9 bugged (by LorenzoC on 2017-06-19 16:17:38 GMT from Italy)
I tried to upgrade from Debian 8 and making a "clean" install, there are tons of bugs in Debian 9, like USB dongles not working while the kernel spits cryptic and useless errors, CDs that cannot be unmounted either accessed, weird Networkmanager behavior and so on.

So much for an "extra-stable" distro, years of development and testing for this?.
Regression translates in depression.

Hi Backi!

Ignore those posts from the Fedora and OpenSUSE gang (I recognize a couple).....they always do that (leave nasty comments) every time Debian does something new. And what's even funnier: like Fedora and OpenSUSE have never had problems---good Lord, they both are magnitudes worse (even to this day) than what Debian does and is doing.

HI Rockedge.

It's probably possible technically. But you want to do that because... ?
I mean:
why stack two complete distros one on top of the other?
What would be the benefit?

Also watch out for the compatibility between the glibc versions. tahrpup is
excellent on its own, but its glibc is "old" by now, it has to be 3-4 version
numbers behind that of the Stretch.

Will tahrpup be able to run the Stretch apps with its C lib version... ?
(Drum roll...) :)

Was not aware about those nasty games.....good to know.
Going to stop spreading these " bad news " about Debian 9 Stretch.

why does anyone climb Mt. Everest? Und warum nicht? Ja es ist etwas wahnsinnig, aber.....

No real reason except to see if I can do it. To be able to run a complete set of programs through Debian. PPM is horrible. It is becoming more difficult to add repos to the Puppy package manager.....all I do at times is spend HOURS getting some things to eventually run in Puppy so for the science of Tahrpup I would like to see what advantage if any and just another level of understanding on how puppies work in certain conditions. Maybe a super web server and maybe it will be a terrible waste of time.

I have a really nice Debian 9 running from a 16 gig USB stick which I am using to post this. Took some tries but using 2 usb sticks to install it works well in the end. So I am ready to run the experiment and see how it behaves.

I will let you know how it looks at the summit.

Summit? :)
But you'll be using Puppy's "UNDERdog" capacity. (hehe) ;)

Access to more apps is certainly a valid reason.

The PPM is giving you trouble, eh?

Here's the source of the news: https://lists.debian.org/debian-cd/2017 ... 00039.html

At least, it was an early discovery. I suspect the bugs have something to do with the departure of Daniel Baumann https://daniel-baumann.ch/. He was the guy behind Debian Live, but Debian terminated him in a humiliating and brutal manner https://lists.debian.org/debian-live/20 ... 00024.html

Well the attempt to boot the tahr 6.0.6 with Debian 9 on a stick as the Underdog worked to an extent. Everything was there BUT I could not get JVM with xwin to start. Maybe any ideas getting the window manager to start?

Hi rockedge.

You mean "JWM", right?
My experience of the latest jwm is that it's buggy. By itself.
