Slacko and Slacko64 RC3

This follows on from development here

Slacko 6.9.9.9 (32 bit) (isos : 260, 277 & 336 MB) Slacko64 6.9.9.9 (64 bit) (isos : 353, 367 & 368 MB) Yup.. 3 32 bit versions and 3 64 bit versions! (kernel source is in 'Menu >> Setup >>Sfs Manager')

Note: google in their infinite wisdom (!not) has decided to make gtk3 a dep of chrome. That sucks badly - I'll drop it from the browser installer. (NOTE: a work around is installed prompting the user to get gtk+3 from the PPM).

Features
  • Common
  • new adrv included as part of build process (see here)
  • new mechanism for including firmware - hopefully most wireless is supported
  • lots of improvements to woof since 6.9.6.7 (too many to list) - many thanks to gyro, jlist, peebee, jamesbond, ninaholic, woodenshoe-wi, zigbert (sorry if I forgot you)
  • new blink based browser installer that supports chrome, opera and vivaldi (can make sfs or pet)
  • brand new home grown icon-theme (rox, gtk and desktop) - "Puppy Flat"
  • all pets are fully reproducible with petbuilds
  • upgrades and updates to browsers, ffmpeg (and underlying dependencies), parcellite, home grown progs, and more
  • new progs in sfs manager including google-earth, torcs (racing game), tux-racer, Qt libs (and more) - all *should work now*

    32
  • abiword, gnumeric and pale moon (actually 'new moon') are in the adrv
  • kernel is 3.16.43 LTS (no pae) or 4.4.70 (PAE - libreoffice on that one)

    64
  • libreoffice (compiled from jamesbond's recipe) and firefox on the adrv
  • kernel is 4.4.70 LTS or 3.16.43 (palemoon, not firefox) or 4.9.30
Known issues
  • wireless for some? (not here) - please provide /var/log/messages (both in pfix=ram and after making a save file, output of 'lspci -nnv', out put of 'lsusb -v' - relevant parts are concerning your wifi adapter (may be on the PCI bus or USB bus)
Happy testing and enjoy!

I have fixed pale moon (new moon) for sse chips (old athlon-xp, centrino, maybe even pentium 3. via? I doubt it!). I have uploaded a delta file for the iso (32 bit only of course) ~24 MB. This will upgrade the iso to slacko-6.9.6.7.p.iso. You can upgrade a savefile/folder with it. See the 32 bit link in the above post.

Also there is an adrive named NEW_adrv_slacko_6.9.6.7.sfs (~40 MB) at the link in the top post too. Just cut off the 'NEW_' prefix and replace the existing adrv if you don't want to muck around with the delta.

Many thanks to @ninaholic on github for testing the new pale moon pet package on an older centrino laptop.

Hi 01micko,
I've been testing out a range of distros for dual-booting on a Win7 tablet. I reckon the 32-bit version you have is a great starting point. I'm currently using network manager and it seems a little flakey at present. I'll have to work out how to include bt keyboard. Touch sensitivity is a bit hit-and-miss but the n-trig stylus is working pretty well OOTB. Pelo and others have been using Slacko on tablets for a while now so I can hunt their solutions down. I used the "i915.modeset=0" argument in grub, don't know if it was required. Cheers!

I just did clean frugal installs of both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions.

I noticed that my logitech wirless keyboard and mouse are supported in the 32 bit kernel but are modules in the 64 bit kernel.
This is not a problem because "initmodules" kicked in automatically and loaded them in "init" on the first reboot.
(It was the "init" messages that brought this to my attention.)
Maybe it's time to move some of this stuff out of the kernel and back to modules. i.e. configure the 32 bit kernel a bit more like the 64 bit kernel.

I also had to run "connect" to get a network connection on eth0.
But once it was configured it remained through subsequent reboots.

Hi Micko & all,

AMD X2 Regor Athlons, 8GB RAM, SSD, Radeon R600, Gigabyte motherboards, (wired & wireless working, BRCM), dual 1280x1024 monitors, all immediately recognized. Thanks! Nice to see the 4.4.67 kernel grabbing my dual monitors without me lifting a finger. Will try to get (or compile) 'redshift' working on this; for some reason struggle with it in 64-bit slackos (32-bit slacko versions are no problem & run redshift compiles great). Cannot figure out why Slacko as a distro overall does not consider 'redshift' an essential component? Staring into blazing monitor screens no one can possibly like, whether laptop and/or desktop. Yet in Slacko PPM, they still have no one offering redshift. Plus, what's out on the web from years ago, well, there's nothing that actually "works". Slacko is the only distro branch (AFAIK) in the Linux world that does not offer 'redshift' in a respository. :( Hard to understand this. (not your doing, Micko, just trying to understand how they don't offer it like everyone else). Thanks again.

@Robert123. I wonder if the fixed package mentioned in the second post fixes pale moon for you?

@gyro - interesting that the network fails to connect at first boot (same with Bill and James by the look) - same here. Will take a look.

I suppose kernel config is a bit more 'relaxed' now. Maybe there is a small memory advantage with having those drivers as modules?

@bellham2 - I'll consider redshift, depending on what dependencies it requires.

Cheers

Hi Micko,

Just downloaded jonls's redshift-master.zip from: https://github.com/jonls/redshift

Followed his instructions for compiling it (using ./bootstrap, then ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var, then make, and finally make install, and 6.9.6.7 w/ the 4.4.67 kernel & devx compiled it just fine and redshift now runs in Slacko64.

Only thing I'd like to be able to do is have granular control over redshift via a "redshiftgui", like in the other pups & slacko32. I had previously posted redshift .pets for most everything in puppy & puppy-related land here that has this gui granular control http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=110341. For some reason, though I now have redshift in Slacko64-6.9.6.7 & it works, I cannot get this redshiftgui to work in Slacko64s.

Thus, for redshift control, I have to instead have to rely on making a .desktop file, putting its link in the tray, where the link manually will launch the .desktop which then launches whatever redshift settings you input into the .desktop. But you have no granular control over redshift, in fact, you have to use xkill or terminal "kill", to end it if you want to watch a movie/video/ or view pictures.

If anyone can get "redshiftgui" working in Slacko64 since regular redshift (as noted above) compiles and installs so easily, would appreciate the help. Reshiftgui comes from here:
https://github.com/maoserr/redshiftgui/downloads It works in every puppy/dog/and even slacko32, but not in slacko64.

New attempt to get printing work in Slacko64... (yes, it works - but quirky...)

- Puppy Setup (wizardwizard) offers rcrsn51's wonderful printing-info from this forum at http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 080#444080.
This info is for 32bit only so has nothing to do in Slacko64.

Went on to rcrsn51's 64bit printing guide at http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=78464, but was not able to succeed at first attempt. I doubt it is rcrsn51's fault. He knows printing - I don't.

Installed hplip-3.16.7 with dependencies (because I have always needed hplip in Slacko32) from PPM. No go - still dead printer.

Uninstalled hplip and tested a plain cups install (what is preinstalled in Slacko - hpcups-3.16.11), but no success. Message in the Printing dialog about missing /usr/lib64/cups/filter/hpcups

Couldn't remember this message from hplip, so installed again the hplip pet with deps, but now installed printer as pristine hpcups 3.16.11. This works.

Printing with the CUPS-PDF printer gives the error:

Backend /usr/lib64/cups/backend/pdf-writer does not exist!

64 bit....Pfind needs to have 64 bit paths in its system search space - /lib64 and /usr/lib64
ImageLxPup = Puppy + LXDE
Main version used daily: LxPupSc; Assembler of UPups, ScPup & ScPup64, LxPup, LxPupSc & LxPupSc64

Thank you for feedback - I will fix!
/usr/lib64/ shouldn't be necessary since /usr/ already is in the searchpaths

6.9.6.7-p 32bit is working good here so far for me too. The new flat icons are interesting. Except for not being able to open a rar I downloaded today in Rox/Xarchive (used the pet here to fix which I had laying around), I have no bugs to report... yet. :)

Hi all,

Is anyone having any problems opening svg files? I have a cache of svg files for certain programs that I keep and re-use across 64-bit tahrs, xenials, JL64, ddogs, and I thought slackos too. But I can't get Inkscape-lite in slacko64-6.9.6.7 to open a lot of them. Huh??

I can't remember, but does Slacko require a certain type or format of svg files as opposed to tahrs/xenials/etc? and that is why only some of my svg files open? If that is true, have I been blind in not noticing it before in previous Slacko 32 and 64 versions??

Here's a TAS of the Inkscape-lite error I am getting trying to open quite a few of these svg files...(have never seen this before so am a bit lost what to do to correct it):
