vlc in Puppy
As an alternative, you could try Fatdog (a relation of the Puppy breed ). My version has vlc. Distrowatch:

@ethplorer:-
Give this SFS package from OscarTalks a try...
http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks/vlc-2.1. ... ps-s14.sfs
It was compiled for Slacko, and is completely self-contained; no dependencies, needed libs, anything like that. It's worked in every Slacko I've tried it in.
If you need help with installing an SFS package, just ask; they're not so different to installing a .pet.
Mike.

Here's one to try, that works in all of my slacko pups:
http://smokey01.com/rg66/X-slacko/sfs/v ... slacko.sfs
It's <42MB
Just copy the sfs to your /mnt/home partition, load it and see if it runs, if not try running it from the terminal and see what it indicates and post the info back here and someone may be able to help you.
