What the xcow says?

#1 Post by Lobster »

My cowsay (xpupsay) which I just installed ain't working in Slacko?
This is the console error message, which I don't understand.
Do I need to update some C library somehow?
Was working in 32 bit last time I checked ...

Code: Select all

# xpupsay

(process:6945): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
	Using the fallback 'C' locale.

I compiled xcowsay v1.4 in Slacko 6.9.6.4 and it's working for me with no warnings or errors.

edit: The xpupsay pet works too for me. Somehow I missed that link in your post until now.

Hi Lobster.

I don't know this program, but a common cause for this problem is:
Is it possible you forgot to enable nls at compile time?

Best regards.

Thanks guys. The last computer I had was a 64/32bit AMD CPU - xpupsay and xcowsay worked OK.

Now I am running Slacko64 on a 64bit only computer - does the program need recompiling for 64bit? Anyone know where that is?

In these strange times we need more talking cows.

Many thanks :D

Actually, Lobster, that shouldn't make a scrap of difference. Every 64-bit CPU ever built will run 32-bit software. In other words, you can run either 32-bit or 64-bit Pups.....just not usually at the same time, since they use different sets of registers within the processor.

My own CPU - an original AMD Athlon 64 dual-core - was one of the very first on the market, back in 2004 or thereabouts. I run both 32- and 64-bit Pups on it with no problems. It had to be able to run 32-bit stuff, since most of the competition only had 32-bit at that time. We don't count Intel's 'Itanium' processors from that time; that was just an expensive mistake for Intel!! Nobody was in the least bit interested in them.....Intel just wrote the whole sorry episode off as one of their biggest losses to date at that time, re-grouped, and headed off in a new direction.....

FWIW, there is no such thing as '64-bit only'; that's ad-men's marketing hype. It's more likely it needs re-compiling for the Pup itself, as opposed to the CPU. A 64-bit Pup will make use of the additional features within the chip, which a piece of 32-bit software will not be able to access. Not while that 64-bit Pup's running, anyway.....

Just compiled & installed xcowsay 1.4 myself, in Slacko64 6.3.0. It's working fine...

@Lobster:- I would guess that's all it needs. Re-compiling....with the appropriate devx, of course.

Cool Mike. 8)

Will you be making 64bit compilation available on your website? I can barely compile a shopping list ...

Here ya go, Lobster. Give this a try:-

https://www.datafilehost.com/d/91ef00ce

As stated, compiled in Slacko64 630; this was the first, early iteration of Slacko 64, running the 4.1.11 kernel. Not knowing which release of Slacko64 you're using, I can't say for definite that this'll work.....but it's got two chances, hasn't it?

I just used pFind to track down the components (since 'make-install' installs it directly), and knocked them together into a .pet.

See what happens..!

I got the same download error.

There is a thread on the other forum for xpupsay, including a 64bit version. Maybe that will work? At least it's downloadable...
