I don't know why but the AR5BXB63 that came in my Acer 5570Z does not "see" these new wireless routers being handed out to the unwashed masses by Brighthouse / Spectrum here in Florida. (I suspect they ship configured N-only) Since this is the laptop I use for service calls, it's important I can connect to other people's routers.
In an effort to resolve the issue I've replaced the AR5BXB63 (Wireless B/G) with an AR5B95 (Wireless B/G/N-150) purchased off eBay.
My laptop is configured to dual boot Puppy 6.3.0 no-Pae from a memory stick and Vista from the hard drive. Finding the right drivers for Vista was no problem and the card appears to be working fine.
Puppy sees the card and can acquire an IP address from my Netgear router but that is as far as it goes. I cannot get on the net using Firefox and Thunderbird cannot access the mail server. Anyone have a clue as to what is happening?
The AR5B95 is evidently a rarity due to the lack of discussion here on the forums.

Open a terminal and run: ping 8.8.8.8
Do you get a response?
Check the file /etc/resolv.conf. Does it show a valid nameserver?
Yes.
ping: sendto: Operation not permitted.
Ah ha! Firewall issue. Ran the firewall wizard and all is well now.
Thank you for your timely assistance.
Now to see if those pesky Brighthouse routers are visible.
