TestDisk & PhotoRec are portable applications, extract the files and the applications are ready to be used. No need to run an installer.- PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from hard disks, CD-ROMs, and lost pictures (thus the Photo Recovery name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the file system and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's file system has been severely damaged or reformatted.
If you have lost partition or strange problem with your hard disk partitions, run TestDisk to recover your data. TestDisk detects numerous filesystem including NTFS, FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, ext2, ext3, ext4, btrfs, BeFS, CramFS, HFS, JFS, Linux Raid, Linux Swap, LVM, LVM2, NSS, ReiserFS, UFS, XFS.
They will need to be run in a terminal.
The downloaded package will be testdisk-7.0-WIP.linux26.tar.bz2 that has both programs in it.
Open with Xarchive, select all, and select extract.
This will put all the contents in a named directory (testdisk-7.0-WIP).
Open the directory in Rox file manager.
To run test disk
right click on testdisk_static and select run in terminal.
To run Photorec
Right click on photorec_static and select run in terminal.
This directory (testdisk-7.0-WIP) has program info files and a link to the online documentation.
