GPS App in Puppy?
GPS App in Puppy?
A potential new Puppy user asked if there were any GPS apps under Linux.
I tried a Forum search on "gps" and it came up blank.

The primary uses of GPS are in mobil e and portable contexts.
The guy who spoke to me wants something that supports common GPS apps -
road maps & directions while traveling, etc.
WDYT?

Seems like a wonderful app, though hardly anyone seems know that it exists.brad_chuck wrote: http://www.gpsdrive.cc/
Have you communicated with the author?
Looks as thought it was abandoned in 2004. If it works for me I'd like to send a little
something to the author, or perhaps to you if you are moving it over to Puppy and plan
to continue development and support.
One of my apps would be for disaster response via Amateur Radio and given that it
works on PDA's and laptops I am certain that a Puppy version would be very popular
among Ham disaster response folks.

Finally got a moment to load and run it.
Loaded without errors and I see it pop up but it then disappears.
I do not have a GPS device connected, could that be the problem, or do I need to
tweak a setting or load some other dependency?

I have a "frugal" install on my laptop.brad_chuck wrote:OK, well I booted a live CD in ram and I got the same problem. It does the same thing. On my hardrive install it works without a problem? Perhaps you have to have a hard drive install? How is your system configured?
I can try a full install on a desktop.
Someone on the Forum likely knows what would cause the different response between
the Live CD and Frugal HDD Installs vs a Full HDD Install.

That's what I'm getting atedoc wrote:Hopefully someone will look at this thread and spot the fix.
Here's an alien package gpsdrive-2.10pre2.tar.gz. I happen to have some of those libs compiled so I gave it a stab.
Let me know if it works!! That was a rushed compile, I'll do it again after I investigate any options that are available or any problems are found.
I also plan to test next with a livecd boot. I have no GPS that I can attach to a desktop.[/url]

Here's an alien package (*edit, it was too big, give me like 10 minutes). I happen to have some of those libs compiled so I gave it a stab.
Let me know if it works!!
Was it supposed to overwrite the existing files or create a new parallel version, please?
I didn't restart X, perhaps I need to do that.

It is just too beautiful! THANKS!!John Doe wrote:Sorry, I screwed up and uploaded the source.
I fixed it now and tested. It seem to work.
Redownload, install and type "gpsdrive" at the shell. I just ran it on puppy 2.13beta2. It loads right up.
There is a pop-up window warning to not run it as Root. Is that expected?
Now I will HAVE to get me a GPS!
This really helps to round out the apps for Puppy:
Office
Internet Apps
Wired & Wireless Networking
GPS
Audio & Video Processing
Amateur Radio apps
Bible study (some work still needed there)
And more ...
Now to get this all on my new 2G USB stick for USB-boot & run!

Linux GPS
Make positive that the GPS unit works with linux!
I think they have a list on the GPSdrive website.

Re: Linux GPS
For some reason there is no date stamp on that Web page so I cannot tell if thatbrad_chuck wrote:Make positive that the GPS unit works with linux!

list is current or a couple of years old -- especially considering that the date stamp
elsewhere for the most recent updates on the site are in 2004.
EDIT:
Just saw a post stamped thus:
"by JoergOstertag - Jan 8th 2006 11:43:25" on the http://freshmeat.net/projects/gpsdrive/ site so good news re. 2005 activity.
Not sure about 2006 or 2007.
I finally succeeded in subscribing to the gpsdrive discussion list and have posted my
question about Bluetooth GPS devices there.
END EDIT
I am looking at things like the BT-5 Bluetooth GPS Receiver w/Car Charger (Unitraq
International Co.) -- neat idea to not have to fuss with wires!
Here is their supported GPS list, none mention Bluetooth:
* Magellan 310, 315, 320
* Garmin GPS III
* Garmin etrex
* GPS 45
* Crux II GPS PCMCIA card
* Holux GM-200 serial version
* Holux GM-200 USB (needs USB to serial support in kernel)
* eMap
* GPSMAP 295
* GNS 530
* Garmin GPS 12MAP
* EAGLE Expedition II
* DeLorme Earthmate (serial version)
* Rayming TripNav, TN-200
* Deluo USB GPS
* Magellan Meridian Gold (works only with NMEA V2.1 GSA setting)
* NAVILock GPS Receiver (http://www.navilock.de)
* Haicom GPS HI204e
* Magellan Nav 6500
* BendixKing KLX 100
* Motorola i58sr Cellular Phone w/built-in NMEA-compatible GPS

Hi . . . . I'm new to Puppy (new to Linux) and have 2.13 running from a CF Card(IDE) on a VIA Mini-ITX Motherboard + Vibrant 10.4" LCD Display. A miniature setup for use on a miniature Yacht! Everything in Puppy that I want to use, works OK . . . . . .
BUT can someone tell me how to install gpsdrive-2.10pre2.tar.gz. Is there an easy "Installer" somewhere that will make life easy for me?
Many thanks - Steve

You install it as an "Alien" package using the Setup - Puppy Package Manager - PetGet Package Manager - ...binary tarball (it is the second down from from the top)G4MJW wrote:Hi . . . . HTH ...
BTW: Can you describe that MoBo/LCD a bit more, perhaps comparing it to a typical
desktop PC? Other than the obvious, the display is smaller, how well does it handle
large Internet downloads, especially video? Does it offer the usual USB, Serial, etc?
How much RAM are you using? Are you using wireless mouse and keyboard? What
case did you use? I did look around for the Vibrant 10.4 LCD. Is it only available in
Europe generally and for POS systems? What is the cost, please?
