SATA media drive support?

#1 Post by LOF »

Does Puppy have support for my SATA DVD-RW drive?

I have been trying loads of different distros and all fail on boot. I now think thatit may be because of my rather advanced disc drive.

If the answer is no then does anyone know of a way to get around this fact?

Thanks in advance.

Puppy does not - SATA device support is virtually nil !
How is it attached (controller)

You need a driver - use Google or owner's manual for SPECS.
Check your dmesg findings

Code: Select all

 dmesg | less
Run elspci or lspci ~ see How-to info on identifying devices.

I'm still slightly confused as to how to get a driver.

From my graphic's card manufacturer (ATI)?
Or from an external source?

[EDIT- Would an external USB CD rewriter be better? I've got one lying around.]

Thanks so far.

If you don't mind a fat installation (really fat!): openSuSE 10.2 works like a champ with SATA. My server has 4 HDD's connected to the regular EIDE controller and a HDD and a DVD writer to SATA (both with SATA->EIDE converters) It boots from the SATA HDD (or the SATA DVD). To do this you have to set the BIOS the right way.

An external USB drive (whatever it is) works with Puppy but you have to mount it before use.

How would I mount my USB cd drive from within Windows (if possible)?
