I don't know.

I just emailed Jesse and Ladislav from distrowatch urging them to follow http://blog.puppylinux.com/.

Hopefully that will make a difference. :)

distrowatch shows last Quirky

#66 Post by Pelo »

what is new in this version ? True , distrowatch shows last Quirky, but omitted xenialpup and slacko just released. But as text is always the same, is it so important ?
"Puppy Linux is yet another Linux distribution. What's different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full-featured. Puppy boots into a ramdisk and, unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, it loads into RAM. This means that all applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any USB memory device, CDROM, Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy disks, internal hard drive. It can even use a multisession formatted CD-RW/DVD-RW to save everything back to the CD/DVD with no hard drive required at all. " That was yet truth for Puppy Linux 4.3.1.

One question 01micko. Why the decision to keep Mesa 9.1.7 on Slacko?

As i pointed in a previous post, many bugfixes for some cards are on 10.x (like AMD Radeon HD 5000 series and later). Currently, Opera 38 has acceleration issues not shown in previous releases, two related to Mesa (now i need Mesalib 10.6 to bypass this, as happens for example with Intel based GPU).

I upgraded Mesa to 9.2.5 on Slacko 6.3.0 (after solving issues with Glamor) and performance was a bit better, but i can't go beyond that because xserver is more complex to compile (Mesa 10.x need DRI3 support).

Hi Mick, thank you for a very nice release. I'm having audio issues tho. Hp laptop with amd running (apparently) pulseaudio sound as default. Latest Mint and latest Ubuntu have no problems pulling up the card. Latest fatdog uses alsa, which I have to manually choose the analog card but then the alsamixer comes up and then it's good to go.

Seems like alsa isn't loaded, I took a dmesg snapshot.

Any help is appreciated and would like some pointers on compiling pulseaudio into the kernel.

Up against that pesky 'permission denied' once again. Trying to add a user to run this keeps failing, I'm very clueless as to what to do.

The 64bit version is not seeing my wireless card.

iwlwifi - Intel Corp Centrino Wireless-N 2230 (Rev c4)

Even if I load it in network wizard.

Frugal install on HDD, booted with Lilo. Works as advertised. :beer:

FWIW Slacko64 6.3.0 also boots w/o problem with different BIOS settings,
e.g. 'UEFI/Legacy first' with secure boot off.

First boot, PUPMODE=5
PUPSFS=sda4,ext3,/slacko64uefi/puppy_slacko64_6.3.0.6.sfs
PUPSAVE=

No recent Opera, Suggest SWIRon w/Speed dial

#74 Post by mikeslr »

Hi michel804,

There hasn't been a new Opera 64-bit SFS for quite some time. Opera, as you probably know, has been based on Chromium, the "test-bed" for Google-Chrome, for an even longer time. Google, for over a year, has not developed a browser that would 'run-as-root'. For a while, Puppy Devs were able to figure out how to restructure it to do so, but by about November 2017 that no longer appeared possible. Consequently, newer versions of 'Chrome-Clones' are structured to 'run-as-spot'.

As Puppy is a fan-based distro, to produce a new version of Opera, someone would have to devote significant time. No one has, perhaps because Opera has ceased to be unique.

As an old fan of opera, I'd suggest you try Mike Walsh's build of IRON. http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 533#992533. If you use the Addon named Speed Dial 2, it will look and act pretty much like the last version of Opera I used.

The link to the SFS on the above post is to Mike Walsh's Google-drive. Hover you mouse over the icon to make sure you're selecting for download the one for Slacko.

I'd suggest peebee's Chromium as an alternative except some are only built for LxPup64, and I'm not sure which.

and Note:
For the 64-bit version.....

ImageLxPup = Puppy + LXDE
Main version used daily: LxPupSc; Assembler of UPups, ScPup & ScPup64, LxPup, LxPupSc & LxPupSc64

Thanks guys for the updates. I was not aware of this restriction with Opera. So I will try IRON from Mike Welsh and report later...I hope I will like it as much as Opera, it has become my preferred browser for a long time now
