Don't forget to apply your handbrake:

Allegedly the best ripper for anything that is not copy protected:

1. Update QPM

2. Install Handbrake together with all its dependencies

DLNA Quirky Werewolf64 Pup V2 – released 21st Jan 2016

#42 Post by ETP »

Google Chrome Stable for DLNA Quirky Werewolf64 V2.

Attached for anyone wanting to add Chrome in addition to Firefox & SeaMonkey is a pet to do so.
This latest version (V2) of the "Get Chrome" pet has some minor improvements as follows:

1. Quicker.

2. Visual & audible alert at end of install/subsequent upgrade which remains on screen until OK is clicked.

3. Confirmation of new version number.

4. New version is launched upon clicking OK.

The pet creates a new item on the Internet submenu entitled "Get Latest Chrome Version".
First use of that item will download, install and set Google Chrome Stable 64 bit as
the default browser. It may then be launched via the desktop icon named "browse".
Firefox can still be launched from wbar.

Please note that before using it again to upgrade to a new version the current version of Chrome
must first be uninstalled via QPM.

For testing streaming from YouTube's own play on smart TV or Chromecast here is a link to the best
HD playlist that I have come across from Evosia Studios.

DLNA Quirky Werewolf64 Pup V3 - released 23rd March 2016

#43 Post by ETP »

DLNA Quirky Werewolf64 Pup V3 - released 23rd March 2016
For Smart TVs & other DLNA renderers.

This V3 release contains general usability improvements. There is no change to the DLNA aspects.
Install is to an 8GB USB 2/3 stick if the true capacity of the stick is sufficient. If it is not, a larger stick must be used.
It is still based on BarryK’s Quirky Werewolf64-7.4 that was released on 10th Dec 2015. The kernel is 4.2.6.

Full sized screen-shot here: (Press F11 to toggle into full screen then click on link)

http://drive.google.com/uc?export=view& ... jJ4UzJTcFk

Main Changes in V3:

• Handbrake 0.10.2 included.

• Default setting of firewall set to OFF in "Quick Setup" (It should not be engaged with DLNA or Videostream/Google Cast)

• Easier OOTB setup using a new automated faux first-run procedure. Following the completion of Quick Setup, if DHCP has acquired an IP address,
Internet access will be tested and confirmed by a brief on-screen message. Firefox will then launch.
If not confirmed, "Puppy Network Wizard" will instead launch so that you may setup your connection.

• Google-Chrome-Stable 64-bit (49.0.2623.87) re-introduced together with latest utility to update it.
(NB Existing version must first be uninstalled using QPM before using the "Get Latest Chrome Version" utility to update)

• Videostream is enabled by default.

• Google Cast is included & needs to be enabled if a Chromecast dongle is in use or if the YouTube feature "Play on Smart TV" is needed.

• Chrome extension "vGet Cast (DLNA Controller) 0.1.11" included OOTB. This may be used to push local media to a DLNA renderer.

• Firefox (45.01) & Thunderbird (38.7.0) changed over to update/release channels for simple updating.

• Tree 1.7.0, packit-1.14, p7zip-full_9.20.1, debbi-1.2 added & uextract updated to 3.20.

• 32-bit shared libraries for AMD64 added.

• For the UK, BBC iPlayer HTML5 Beta enabled in Chrome.

• Links to Pale Moon's "start.me" page in both Chrome & Firefox. Tip:- Click "more" & then on "more" again in the discover section.

• Slightly improved boot speed.

DLNA: (ReadyMedia a.k.a. minidlna – Version 1.1.5_x86_64)

The primary purpose of this Pup is to act as preconfigured DLNA server. No setup of that feature is required for testing.
The idea is that having gone through the usual quicksetup & network settings DLNA should work OOTB.
Following setup, just reboot and then head off to the TV to test whether or not it works with your particular TV make & model.

In this version the first partition on the stick too small to house additional media. It does contain the two test videos.
The intention is that having tested that it works with your TV; you then switch over to your main media repository
which may be on any accessible drive or partition including another USB stick.

At the bottom of the Utility menu is a new option “Change DLNA Repository

V3

#44 Post by Barburo »

I did a couple of V3 installs. First was to an old USB2 16Gb Corsair Flash drive - the DD took nearly I hour 20 mins. Then I used a new USB3 16GB ScanDisk Flash drive and the DD only took about 21 minutes. Both seem to work well - I have used them to boot on another quite different system - a Toshiba Laptop with ATI graphics and AMD CPUs. It is connected to an external monitor and for perhaps the first time both the laptop screen and the external screen were properly formatted.

Thanks ETP. I am impressed with this V3 - everything just seems to work OK and very swiftly and with portability too! I use my laptop much less frequently these days - like many I do practically all my computing through my smartphone - but I will be using this as my go-to laptop system for now.

Hi Barburo,

Thanks for your report. One word of caution is to avoid touch screens as you tend to get fingerprints
on the car bodywork. I did polish it last weekend but sadly only in mtPaint.

Testing

#47 Post by Barburo »

I managed to break it.
After exiting to prompt I typed: xwin fvwm95 (because that was listed as an option)
System came back again but would not exit. So I did a hard poweroff and rebooted.
The filecheck fixed the USB file system but on next boot the system came up frozen and mouseless.
I fear I've killed it..

Hi Barburo,

Normally typing xwin by itself is sufficient, although you could type xwin jwm with no ill effects.

The syntax displayed is common to all pups including the latest WoofCE based ones. fvwm95 is an ancient
windows manager that pre-dates my time in the kennels. In this pup the only windows manager installed
is jwm. If an additional wm were installed you would have to type xwin xxxxxxxxxx where the x's represent
the correct command for that particular wm.

It is an understandable error given that the example syntax implies that both options are available and a worrying one if it
can do that much damage. IMHO WoofQ & WoofCE need changing.

The safest way to recover the situation is to simply do a re-install to the stick in question.

When you type "xwin fvwm95" it gets written to /etc/windowmanager and that's where .xinitrc looks for which window manager to load. Booting to a prompt and typing "xwin jwm" will restore the file and it should work normally. Or, if you can access your savefile, you can add /etc/windowmanager with jwm as the only text.

Testing

#50 Post by ETP »

Hi Barburo,

Please ignore rg66's well intentioned advice as it does not apply in the context of this Pup.
Just do another install which is a procedure you are familiar with and have had success with.

This Pup is a full install so you will not find a save file or folder on the second f2fs partition.
In addition there are 2 syslinux.cfg files on the first partition. One of those has already been
modified and would need to be modified again before you could issue the appropriate command to
boot to the prompt.
An automatic file system check is triggered if you do a hard poweroff regardless of whether the
file system has been corrupted or not. If it was, it may or may not fix the issue as other files
may have been changed or deleted.

Your motivation for dropping to the command prompt is also not known. Were you just testing the
option or intending to address some issue?

The safest bet is another install which will guarantee success.

Hi ETP
I thought you may have a second Window Manager included, just as in rapid pup you use fluxbox in addition to jwm. Plus in the spirit of testing, if it says something's there I usually try to test it out.

Thanks to rg66 for the explanation.

I said I was using two sticks to test, and I simply copied using Pudd from my good stick over the corrupted one -took about 30 minutes - and I had my customisations back and running.

So I am I'm ready to go again! I think you've done a fine job with this particular puplet and it's my intention to go on using it for now. It's super fast, connects quickly to my wifi router, comes with a huge amount of useful stuff and I'll be looking for other machines to test it's bootability.

At $10 for a USB3 16Gb SanDisk flash drive from Canadian Costco (3 for $30) you may even have won me over to the concept of running a system on a stick rather than a Frugal install or a full install to an internal partition, although ... like others I have grown to like those methods.

If I break it again I've got my backup method from the old USB2 stick or simply reinstall so no worries.

It has come to my attention that the additional WM offered in console has been fixed awhile ago in WOOFCE. So the issue is one of @BarryK's distro(s) carrying this erroneous prompt forward.

Might this error be fixed via your system Maintenance utility? And could "slocate" command be added to Bash via the System Maintenance as well?

Hope this helps.

Hi gc,

I have just loaded Peebee's LxPupSc - Woof-CE, Slackware-current, LXDE experiment 16.03.6 updated
on 31st March. It is based on the latest WoofCE and the [fvwm95 | jwm] syntax is still there.

I may be wrong, but I think that it has to be changed in WoofCE rather than by a pet or SP.

EDIT: Line 499 of the shellscript /usr/bin/xwin is the one that needs changing, plus appropriate
translations for what if anything replaces the existing text.

With regard to my Maintenance utility (WolfAlert_mk1|Visual + Spoken alert of new pets/service packs at boot time)
that was present in V1 but was not included in V2 or V3. I will be issuing it as a pet once russoodle's new
Meownplanet site is online. It has not been available so far this year.

I do not intend to issue a pet for "slocate" due to the fact that it writes to any NTFS partition that you happen
to mount. That could cause corruption if Windows 8/8.1/10 is in fast boot mode.(i.e. hibernated)
I also agree with BK that pFind is no slouch and does a perfectly adequate job.

.
Optional Pet for DLNA Quirky Werewolf64 V3

This pet provides quick access to any Chrome Apps/Extensions together with the ability to perform
ordinary Google searches straight from the desktop.

Installation will create a new menu item named "Chrome App Launcher" on the Internet sub-menu but once
installed it is more convenient to drag the chromeapplauncher.desktop file onto the desktop from /usr/share/applications.

Once you have a copy on the desktop, right click it to edit the text below the icon and to assign it a keyboard shortcut such as the pause key.

Brief examples of use:
Having booted to the desktop........

Press the "pause key"
Press the letter "m" when the GUI pops up. (murga-linux.com/puppy/ should then appear at the top of the list)
Press the "enter" key to access the Puppy forum.

With the forum page on screen.

Press the "pause key" again
Type vg when the GUI pops up. ( The vGet cast extension should then appear at the top of the list)
Press the "enter" key to launch that app.

With that app on screen.

Press the "pause key" again.
Type in any normal search you fancy.
Use the down arrow key to highlight one of the options presented and then press enter.

Wolf Alert has been turned on & will remain so for EDIT 72 hours.

DLNA Quirky Werewolf64 Pup V3 - released 23rd March 2016

Hi greengeek,

Both vlc & kodi have the ability to act as UPnP/DLNA clients/renderers.
Any Pup or Windows O/S running either of them should be O/K.
Here are a couple of screen grabs showing vlc in Chromebook Pup V2 on my XP box
accessing the DLNA server on DLNA Quirky Werewolf64 Pup which is running on my Win10 box.

Thanks ETP - your image shows VLC 2.0.5 and seems to show the upnp protocol available, however my version (2.1.0 Rincewind) does not show it. Did you have to do anything special to get upnp showing in your network tab? cheers!

EDIT - it appears that I need to use the "playlist" tab but when I do this and click universal plug and play I see a spinner which rotates for a minute or so but nothing else appears in the browser window. Does this mean I need to have some sort of playlist set up on the dlna server - rather than being able to browse folders on the server(as I can from my TV)?

(If I click "Jamendo" in the playlist browser it allows me to access files online so VLC seems to be running fine - it just seems as if the problem is in accessing my local dlna server)

EDIT 2 : After I restarted VLC it picked up my dlna server ok. Took a l_o_n_g time to see the folders within the dlna server, but eventually I was able to play the streamed files.

Thanks for the VLC suggestion!

DLNA Quirky Werewolf64 Pup V3 - released 23rd March 2016

Hi greengeek,

Thanks for raising this issue of DLNA clients. You are the first to do so and it is important as not everyone has a smart TV and
may wish to access from another device/OS/Pup.

No setup of any kind is needed in vlc but you do need playlist view (ctrl+l).
It may take some time to scan for DLNA servers and for vlc to then populate its template directories with the list of files
broadcast by the DLNA server.

Information on the kodi setup can be found here: (Look for remote UPnP players)

http://kodi.wiki/view/UPnP/Client

Finally a shot of Blue Pup V6 using Rincewind to access the DLNA server on DLNA Quirky Werewolf64 Pup.
