WIKI Howto |
|
WHAT IS A WIKI?
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/
A Wiki is a free form database that outputs as a series of editable web pages. Anyone with a browser can be a web master
Q: Do I need to learn HTML?
No. It is better not to. The code looks simpler and is easier to edit for non HTML users.
Use Wiki coding where possible
Wikis are designed to convert very simple code into HTML
making them suitable for anyone to edit including those without HTML skills
Recently I had to add some data to an HTML wiki page
though complex it was possible but time consuming
to those without such skills it would have been daunting
and their data input would have been lost
Stripping out HTML
Q: Is it like a blog?
A: People can have a diary or journal inside a wiki. It is like a blog in that it can be used and edited from a browser. A blog is usually one person or occasionally a small group of people
Q: Is it like a forum?
A: This is the forum for Puppy. Forums are text based (with added options) and linear in format, best suited to question and answers and chat. Wikis normally have a way of adding comments but they are a way of presenting the essence of a forum, the knowledge without the questions. The Puppy wiki has comments at the base of each page - these can be toggled off and on. You can double click on most Puppy wiki pages and edit (and use the formatting tools at the top of the page)
Q: What makes them unique?
A: They are diverse in format and capability. The Puppy wiki is an easy and fast one. They allow everyone to create and develop web pages and for useful data to form
Q: Who owns the Wiki?
A: We do. Everyone is equal. Barry is the host and admin, just as John Murga is the host and admin of the Puppy forum. The person hosting and administrating, for obvious reasons has more power and control over the wiki. Some people are more active but that is through choice. Most pages on a wiki can be edited from any browser without registering.
Q: Do all wikis work in the same way?
A: No. The principles are the same but wikis evolve fast and are different. The Puppy wiki is simple to use and fast, just like Puppy. It is a great way of learning.
HOW DO I WIKI?
Q: How do I edit a page?
A: Double click on most pages to edit. Click on add comment (base of page) to add a comment. Highlight and then click on the icons at the top of the page to make bold, italic, indent etc
Q: How do I create a new page in the wiki?
A: To create a new wiki page, simply edit an existing page and include a CamelCase word. The CamelCase word will become a link to a blank page (assuming that CamelCase word is not the name of an already existing page, of course!)
Use meaningful naming at the start
If people use the index search
they will be looking by IRCPuppy (notPuppyIRC)find a lot of pages
or WikikInfo
rather than PuppyWikikInfo
Q: What is CamelCase?
A: A word starting with a capital letter, with a capital in the middle or end eg PuppyLinux, or PuppY
Q: How do I save a page?
A: Click on Store. You can always re-edit. If using the preview option remember to store. You can also name your edits and this is recommended as the name appear in the index.
Q: Do I have to register?
A: No but registered users get more privileges and can edit more pages
An unregistered user may come across this:
You don't have write access to this page. You might need to register an account to get write access.
Q: How do I register
A: Click on Login/Register
Your WikiName: (use CamelCase - a name starting with a capital letter, with a capital in the middle or end eg BarryK, GuestToo)
Password (5+ chars):
Confirm password: confirm your password
Email address: add your email address
click Register
Q: Can I edit a page owned by someone else?
A: Yes ownership is more like a caretaker or moderater/guardian. An owner can if they wish restrict access to only them but that is rarely done.
Q: So people can edit my personal pages or journal?
A: A journal may be a page you restrict. Other pages are a group effort. You want people to help and work co-operativly
Q: How do I add pics?
A: Host pics at http://tinypic.com
then add the URL like so:
{{image url="http://tinypic.com/2anwo6" }}

Ah, Lobster, you crazy crustacean, you...you've forgotten one!
How do I create a new page in the wiki?
To create a new Wikki page, simply edit an existing page and include a CamelCase word. The CamelCase word will become a link to a blank page (assuming that CamelCase word is not the name of an already existing page, of course!)

Well spotted ND. Fortunately (just like with a wiki) I can edit any mistakes or updates (which I have done)
You can also use a CamelCase link like this
| Code: | [[ThisIsTheLink These words are the link that appears]]
|
in reality you would do it something like this
| Code: | | [[ExampleLinks Puppy Test Files]] |
Everything after the Camel Case is what displays on the wiki page

!WOW! |

A wikki maybe a newbie should look there for answers as well as the forum!!!
But seriously, the wikki is more pro, indexed to easily navigate.
I suggest noobies look there as well as forum.
And another thought would be to enlarge the search button on the forums
main page so people can search for an answer on the forum and wikki!!!
Just a thought, Don't know if it's possible?
And for my brief commercial, come visit my part of the wikki:

membership is free no shipping, no handling fees!!!

You may be able to delete pages
by putting delete at the end of the page name and pressing enter
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/I_am_Going/delete
If that does not not work send me a PM (private message)

We might need a sticky with a link to the Wiki on each section or a main header link to the Wiki.

There are many pages on the wiki that need improving and updating - who is up for it? News Editors are very welcome as are formatters and spell checking and editing eagle eyed Puppy wikkians . . .
If you need any assistance ask in the users section on this forum

Thanks Babbs
I trust peoples interest and judgement
I would read and edit at the same time
This way I learnt about Puppy and Linux and wikis
The wiki is a great resource that I hope will be made great use of in the official documentation. I have learnt so much from this forum and working and participating in the Puppy Experience. Trust your intuition. Trust the Force Babbs. Trust the Force. Just have fun. Learn and share.

Advanced Wiki skills
Use Wiki coding where possible

though complex it was possible but time consuming

Use meaningful naming at the start
If people use the index search
they will find a lot of pages called PuppyIRC
or PuppyWikikInfo
IRCinPuppy
and WikiInfo are far better names
the key word is at the start
Anyone else have some tips?

Puppy HowTo in other languages |
|
bonjour
I did change today this page:
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/pget
and create
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/pgetD
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/pgetF
under using of 2 includes:
- the first include inserts separately pro language a common left margin text for all the page of each language so that if you add or change one line in this included page, all the pages in the language are actualized
see: http://puppylinux.org/wikka/rand, http://puppylinux.org/wikka/randD and http://puppylinux.org/wikka/randF
- the second connects all translations of the same page together
see http://puppylinux.org/wikka/pgetTongue.
the next advantage of the proposed presentation is to arrive to almost the same presentation without need to mixt HTML and Wiki-Speciallanguage. It is a diabolic mixture for people not experimented with the mixing! I did lose a lot of hours to find how to reproduce the same page presentation as the creator of the pages... but the actual result was possible and content itself with the official FormattingRules!
I didn't find a way to redimensionate the right "float" (s. item 11 on http://wikkawiki.org/FormattingRules ) to give more importance to the text part on the right side. I am sorry...
the original PuppyGet page is saved under pgetOriginal so it is no problem to reactivate it if the community refuses the change.
the language information in ( ) in the left rand (comes from f.ex. http://puppylinux.org/wikka/randF) is to understand as following: (Fr) the page is partially (40 .. 90 %) translated in French, (De) the page is partially translated in German, (FR) the translation of page French is finish, (DE) analog, (fr) only create, and less than about 40 % is translated etc.
Notice: the foot of the page includes yet a large part of HTML. I am sorry: I am no time today to make the 3 pages (UK, FR, DE) clean: it's my problem, that I work in 3 languages... My English is bad. Can one of you be so kind and check / amend this page: http://puppylinux.org/wikka/TheOneTwoThreeEtcPointsProgrammForMicrosoftWindowsUserHowTo/
(will be continued: short infos about the linux file organisation / use of the main windows partition to save big files, so sounds etc / printer / internet connection / add keyboards for Xorg / add Wine / add OO2.0 / add icone for OO / add Rosengarten etc... you can contribute if you want! I have enough to do to translate it into two languages ... )
salut

That's great stuff!
This should go into the Wiki. |
to introduce really such major articles into the wiki and make them
- accessible directly through the left margin major links
- extensible if with see new details or aspects of the question
- changeable through the release evolution of PUPPY
- and translatable in different languages!
I did make it in the last days with the topic "Boot Puppy directly from DOS"
you can see here
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/BootPuppyWith
that I did
- create the left margin major link for "Boot With..."
- create a major left margin link for "Write self in the wiki"
- create the empty pages in 3 languages and a first hierarchy for the point
"Boot With..."
- translate the reference to the new forum divisions in foreign languages in the left margin in the French and in the German template (template = include)
- put 3 different forum messages into the point 3 of this hierarchy as page 1, page 2 and page 3 of point 3
- translate the first page into French.
I will suggere that more messages of the forum has to be copy into the wiki in this manner.
Suggestion of more urgent topics:
- Start from Floppy
- Start from USB-drive with an adequate BIOS
- Start from USB-drive with a non adequate BIOS
- Managing PUPDOT's and architecture of those archives
- Limits and differences of XVESA and XORG and managing (adaptation for the vision for example for old persons)
- Managing different mode of installation
- Managing family oder class room network and SAMBA
- Use and managing Quisp SQL Data base and example of applications
- Make you browser more performant, install plugin's, dictionary and use MPlayer for MS-Windows-mediaplayer in Linux
- find libraries required by different PUPGET's
Because of the really little number of pages in my mother tongue I see my function more translating such wiki pages as creating them because my time is also limited. So it would be necessary to find friends helping to look for old messages in the forum about above subjects and installing them as new wiki page!
Who is willing to help?
Who knows interesting / major messages of the forum about above subjects (or other) and recommend them and / or create the new wiki pages?
salut
