Libre Office Cloud

#1 Post by rufwoof »

A bit like googledocs - online/browser versions of word processor/spreadsheet etc. ... but for Libre Office https://www.rollapp.com/libreoffice

Not tried it (yet) myself as I prefer local versions. My Libre running in ram loads as quick as abiword/gnumeric :)

looks cool and promising except for the largely useless unless you pay by the month bit:

https://www.rollapp.com/plans

maybe libre itself will come out with a free version--if it works as well from a browser as it does as a suite, it would make the basis for a very light and capable pup--no need for abiword or libreoffice proper, and no real need for wps or any of the lighter doc/docx handling applications either, it would seem.

interesting find regardless.

Doesn't sound that useless to me. The worst case is no apps settings saving (having to reconfigure preferred settings).

You can't save to the Cloud storage space (fair enough - and you presumably have to save to a local file), and max apps running at same time = 3 (word processor, spreadsheet, another).

Haven't actually tried it though, so my perception and reality might be different.

In my area wireless (mobile phone) speeds currently available are as high as 300Mbs with 400Mbs being trialled. Usually within a handful of years todays fast becomes tomorrows commonly used. At those levels of speeds (faster than 100Mbs LAN speeds that were/are common), the option of having more stuff stored/run in/from the Cloud becomes much more feasible. Making local devices more like terminals in a terminal/server type arrangement.

I have one pup that has a mini pup inside initrd, that then enables you to pull down a bigger pup from the 'Cloud' and switch root to that. The direction we seem to be heading is towards light local devices, remotely served pay-per-use content/programs/apps. Which is fine if you're net connected, not so good if your out of range. Also not so good on the desktop program side either as perhaps the likes of a downloadable Libre Office suite might no longer be provided at some stage and instead users being expected to use the online (subscription) based 'choice' instead.

The way I'm steering my pups/home lan is towards being our own personal 'Cloud' device. PC that's connected to the TV as a display and input device of smart phone that rdp's into that PC. That PC can then be a web server, phone/comms link and remote desktop server... etc. that is accessible from anywhere globally (smart phone, Windows PC...etc).

With low power/quiet PC's on a stick (USB) that's even more feasible.

The added benefit of using a personal 'Cloud' system is that it is also local, so can include web cams, turning things on and off at home remotely etc. Maybe detecting via bluetooth (short range) that your car has entered the driveway and opening the garage doors for instance.

For me that means pups ideally are read only. Being more open to the web read only is the more secure choice.
