Has any user experienced the mouse freeze bug in LibrePup?

I have several times in the past two weeks, and it's not funny. It's been
reported in Trisquel proper, and in the fathering Ubuntu distro. But
contrary to what was said in those bug reports, changing the apic or the
acpi settings on the grub launch line doesn't seem to bring any
improvement. Once you have this problem, it stays with you at each
session and you have to create a new pupsave file. I tried changing
video drivers in xorgwizard, but that seemed to make things worse.

It's really a downer to have to redo your pupsave file every few days
because of this random freeze. Could it be something to do with hardware
acceleration generally in this totally libre distro? Or maybe I'm talking
through my hat. In any case...

Also, who of the LibrePup users have vlc playing DVD's? I know I don't.
The exact same version of vlc plays them great in tahr-6.02. Can't figure
this bug out. Additionally, the vlc icon gets stuck in the tray bar when
you close vlc. Every time I've used vlc, I had to kill it with htop "# 9 kill"
to really close it. And vlc uses 100 % of your computer's resources, of
course, while theoretically "closed".

mplayer2 works a charm, however, in LibrePup.

As bert mentioned above, I'm reporting, not complaining. I really like the
concept of LibrePup and would like it to succeed fully.

BFN.

musher0
For what it's worth, I've had no mouse problems at all, though I guess I should add "yet"..
And VLC plays dvd's correctly, shuts down fine ( no icon in the tray) and barely bothers my cpu.

Thanks James C., for your report.

I'm beginning to think that the hardware combination on my old AMD clonker
may be the cause.

Hi musher0,
for your mouse bug, try to add this in xorg.conf

Code: Select all

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
EndSection
Tell us if it works.
Cheers

Hi, linuxcbon.

Thanks for the tip, but my xorg.conf already has that "paragraph"... :(

I finally got in my librepup again by renaming file .xorgwizard-reenter in
/root to NON.xorgwizard-reenter. Phew. But still no mouse movement.

I was thinking... if this bug has to do with video acceleration... as some
Internet sources at the "commentcamarche.net" site say it does...

1) I have an old radeon card on this machine:

Code: Select all

lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV350 AR [Radeon 9600]
2) The raring-3.9.9.2 pup uses the radeon card on my same set-up.
(info from xorg.conf)

3) TahrPup and LibrePup have the same number of drivers stored at
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers (23), among which we find a radeon driver.

4) the worgwizard in librepup offers only ati and modesetting choices.

I know this may sound like heresy in the context of a "libre" distro, but:
can librepup be made to use the radeon driver? If so, how?

I am reasoning that if it works in raring, it has to work in librepup. Maybe
the radeon driver would provide the necessary acceleration to un-stick
the mouse?

(BTW, my tahrpup set-up seems to be using the nvidia driver on my
radeon card. Or am I seeing things?! )

Thanks kindly for any lead.

P.S. I also may have a hunch about the DVD movies replay problem, but
one thing at a time!

Hi musher0,
I don't know what your mouse problem is.
For radeon loading, in xorg.conf there should be something like :

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Card0"
   Driver "radeon"
 EndSection
Cheers

The Librepup repository is back to life :)

I'm working on an ARMv7 port of Librepup, for Asus C201 and other machines with the RK3288 chipset.

Also, I want to build 6.0.2.2, which has many uneeded packages removed (mostly libraries), several fixes and some improvements from woof-CE.

Interesting choice, the C201. That could very well be the perfect price point and quality for a puppy distro. Good luck with that project. It may make me go out and pick up a C201, myself!

Best,

Hmm.. how would this happen? Building a 32 bit kernel in 64 bit userspace maybe?

Code: Select all

# mount.aufs
bash: /sbin/mount.aufs: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error

Code: Select all

# file `which mount.aufs`

SAve session problems

#251 Post by gcmartin »

Operating current version from DVD, I saved the session at shutdown to a ext2 partition with the folder option. The save-session folder is one-level below root in /Sessions.

But the boot process cannot find the save-session during boot. I have also tried to F2 to enter "puppy pfix=fsck, copy waitdev=8" but even that does NOT help the system to find its save-session.

Has anyone else noticed this problem?

Just letting you know - for 6.0.2.2, I also upgraded the entire graphics stack (X, Mesa, etc') to the versions used by the latest Ubuntu release (what Canonical calls "hardware enablement") - they package the newer graphics stuff from the latest release, for the LTS release. Trisquel has those backports too, let's take advantage of them :)

This means you get recent graphics drivers, while overall stability and compatibility with older versions is not sacrificed.

error corrected, thanks, KE.

as for the mechanics behind the mistake, the sticky clipboard on this spin sometimes won't let go of old entries. while your guess was good, the sum was originally copied in its entirety. the error occurred because the clipboard problem gave too much output when i finally got the right hyperlink (the original problem was that it didn't let go of the devx's address when i went to paste the iso's). seeing a ton of unnecessary text on the screen, i started cutting out what seemed out of place and extraneous until the preview looked okay. one overzealous cut took out that first digit.

Librepup 6.0.2.2 will be available shortly :)

Changes:
- New artwork
- netmon_wce
- An updated kernel
- Fix for the fonts issue in Geany
- Many woof-CE fixes and improvements by 01micko and mavrothal
- Greatly reduced size - many unneeded libraries were removed
- UI improvements by zigbert

As usual, you can build your very own Librepup using woof-CE, without any hacks or ondocumented changes.

Librepup 6.0.2.1

#258 Post by Billtoo »

It doesn't say Librepup but it works okay so far.
I chose the PAE kernel.

Manual frugal install to hard drive of lenovo desktop:

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Sat 24 Oct 2015 on Belenos Puppy 6.0.2.2 Linux 3.14.20 i686
2.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
oem: Intel(r)Eaglelake Graphics Chip Accelerated VGA BIOS
product: Intel(r)Eaglelake Graphics Controller Hardware Version 0.0

X Server: Xorg Driver: intel
X.Org version: 1.17.1
dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (507x285 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) G41 x86/MMX/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 10.5.9

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz
Core 0: @2003 1: @2003 MHz

I added Abrowser from PPM.

Vlc wouldn't run until I edited the hidden .spot-status file and ran
QuickSetup first-run settings:

abrowser=true
vlc=true

It was =false before QuickSetup.

That's it so far, will test more in the morning.

Thanks.

Hi Iguleder.

I'll wait for a ready-made iso if you don't mind. Yesterday I took another shot at woofing,
a Wheezy Pup this time, and the script ended up reporting that there were 275 pet
packages missing. There's no way I'm going to stop the woofing process 275 times to
hunt down those pets.

Again, half an hour ago, I looked through the GUI of your woof-libre-libre archive, and it
was still Martian to me. I thought reading through the explanations in the GUI would help
me, but it just confused me more, sorry.

I thought I had an average IQ, but it seems that no! What else can I say? :) Or maybe I
don't have the kind of technical IQ required to do any "woofing" -- whereas it comes
naturally to you guys. My background is in music and linguistics, and it's a totally
different way of thinking, not exploding in all directions at once like this woof process
does, not trying to juggle with one hundred concepts at once, it's much more sequential,
like a time-line, and much more "wordy", of course. I'm not saying that any particular
way of thinking is wrong or superior, I'm just saying that they are different, and therein
lies my problem, I can't seem to adapt to it.

BTW, the above is an "I" statement, I'm not blaming anything or anyone, I'm just trying to
put into words my personal experience of the woof-CE. Maybe at some point I'll have an
eureka moment about the woof process, but until then... time is at a premium you know.

So whenever you feel like uploading the iso of your new librepup somewhere, I'll be
waiting. I would very much like to try out your new version.

Thanks in advance. BFN.

Don't worry, musher0.

I'll upload the ISO today or tomorrow, with no-brainer instructions how to build it.
Billtoo wrote:It doesn't say Librepup but it works okay so far.

Good job, thanks for testing woof-CE! All the Librepup stuff are in woof-CE, except four things:
- The kernel - the Librepup Linux-libre packages are hosted in librepup.info, while woof-CE looks for kernels in ibiblio
- Artwork - the logo, wallpaper, etc'
- The deblobbed woof-code (i.e without firmware, references to non-free software such as Flash, etc')
- The "Librepup" branding

To build Librepup, you should use woof-CE-libre. It's a fork of woof-CE that is constantly updated - all changes and additions in woof-CE are merged into it, with additional changes:
- It's configured to download libre kernels from librepup.info
- It has Librepup's logo, etc'
- It has a deblobbed woof-code

If you wonder why I most Librepup stuff in woof-CE instead of keeping everything in woof-CE-libre, here's my answer:
- It's easier to maintain woof-CE-libre this way
- We don't want users that build a "Librepup" with woof-CE to be surprised or confused when they get a Puppy with non-free components; therefore, the Librepup branding is only part of woof-CE-libre
- This separation makes it possible to build "almost libre" puplets - i.e Librepup with a non-free kernel, to support WiFi cards that need non-free firmware. In fact, it's possible to "rebase" tahrpup against Librepup (add the non-free browser, replace the kernel, etc'): this way, the user know exactly which components create privacy and security risks.
