Muppy 006

Dumb questions, perhaps, but here goes:
I have a frugal install of 2.12 (beta), so there is a pup_212.sfs on my hard drive. Muppy 006, as I understand, is based on 2.12, and looking at the Muppy 006 CD I burnt, there is a pup_212.sfs file there, but obviously not the same thing.
I haven't booted Muppy on this laptop yet, just in case I mess something up. (I booted it on an older laptop, and the memory went into the red, I guess because the graphics use some (64MB?) of the 256MB, but not an issue because that isn't the machine I usually use.)
1. If I boot with the CD, doesn't Puppy look for a pup_212.sfs on the hard drive and use that instead of the one on the CD, for boot-up speed?
2. Is there any way I can do a frugal install and boot 2.12 or Muppy? I guess if I rename either pup_212.sfs file, it won't get found during boot-up, and it has to be in C:\. (I currently boot Win XP, Puppy 2.10, and Puppy2.12beta, via grub.)
3. Will Muppy use my existing pup_save file to get its settings, or do I need to copy things like wireless settings across?
4. Trying to boot the Muppy 006 CD on an old desktop (P600, 320MB) I got some kernel panic message (interrupt something). Has anyone else seen such an error, or is it likely to be some hardware fault? I suspect the latter because the machine won't run some Windows applications at the moment, but if there is some boot option that might help (pfix=ram didn't make any difference) I'll try it. I think the CD should be OK because it booted the old laptop OK.
5. How do I make the XORG/XVESA selection on a laptop, which has no numpad arrows?
Or shall I just wait for Muppy 007?

1.)
It looks for mupp_212.sfs on your harddrive.
If that is not there, it offers top copy it there, also pup_212.sfs and zdrv_212.sfs, overwriting existing ones.
So you might backup those first.
If you cannot boot from a CD-drive, copy them in Windows or another Puppy.
2.)
after these 3 files were copied, also copy vmlinuz and initrd.gz, for example to c:\muppy006\
Then add them to grub.
3.)
yes, it uses your existing pup_save.3fs, but was not intended to do that.
Imortant would be:
a) make a backup first (!!!!!)
b) install this dotpup, best will be while still running your "old" puppy:
http://htb65.de/puppylinux/puppy-releas ... pgrade.pup
c) run Muppy from CD or frugal.
This might work, but I cannot guarantee it!
4.)
Kernelpanic:
no idea.
On my tests, I sometimes must use
puppy ide=nodma acpi=off
You could try more, like:
puppy ide=nodma acpi=off apm=off noapic nolapic nomce nosmp irqpoll usb-handoff
5.)
If not, go through xorgwizard, then skip the "test".
Exit it, and run xorgwizard again, now the keys seem to work, so you can choose xvesa.
6.)
As you see, all issues can be solved with 006.
I was quite ill the last days, when I wanted to use my free days to continue Muppy.
So now this throw me back, and the next version might take a month.
Please tell us, how it works for you

It seems you can use the "arrow-left" key, only "arrow-right" works wrong. How do I make the XORG/XVESA selection on a laptop, which has no numpad arrows?

Linux Specialists
Mark,
This is a bit off-topic, so my apologies, but I know you're monitoring this thread closely so I thought I'd pass along this job opportunity for the City of Munich, which is looking for Linux Specialists. You mentioned in a prior post you are working, but I thought I'd pass along the opportunity nonetheless. I can't read a word of it since it's written in German, but since you're the beneficiary, it only matters that you can read it:

Background on the IBM/Linux deal:

Hope you're feeling better!

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you too! Take care of yourself first and foremost - recovery/healing takes some time with some of these illnesses and your good health is the most important thing right now.
By the way...a bit of New Year's champagne can help with the pain!

On my newer laptop, I ran the dotpup you suggested, then in Windows I renamed the 2.12 files, then booted with the Muppy CD. It booted OK, and used my old pup_save file. I think this had the effect of overwriting the Muppy settings, so the desktop was nothing special. I rebooted but with no pup_save file, and got the Muppy screen - very nice, but maybe the default wasn't my style, or didn't suit a small-ish laptop screen. I didn't persevere with it for now, as 2.12 is fine on the laptop.
Instead I went back to the old PC that wouldn't boot, and removed one of the 2 CD drives, and it boots fine from the Muppy CD now. The CD drive is only about 12 years old, so perhaps I can claim under warranty
No problem choosing all the screen things, etc, (used the left arrow), and I was there. Muppy seems to suit the bigger screen. I set up the internet connection with no problem. I shut down, and it did all the save file stuff, and rebooting did the saving Muppy_212.sfs to the hard drive, all no problem. Now there were so many different themes to choose from!
I think I will tailor Muppy to suit my desk PC, and keep 2.12 for the laptop.
That's a great thing about Puppy - so much choice. It's just difficult to make the choice sometimes!
It goes to show how far Puppy has come in the goal that it should "just work". All in all a very good job!

To force the Muppy-desktop on your laptop, you could try 2 things:
exit X.
Type:
xwin starticewm
Then copy /initrd/pup_ro2/root/Choices/ROX-Filer/ to
/root/Choices/
This would overwrite the settings for your desktop-icons with Muppys defaults.
The last step is not that important, as most Muppy-programs also can be accessed from the Icewm-menu.

That's great news!
Erik already gave some kind of info on how to do it here

I updated the servicepack
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Muppylinux/Mu ... cepack.pup (10 kb)
bugfix: wine is replaced with a symlink to wine-kthread
That should fix random crashes running windows programs
bugfix: replaced /usr/sbin/findhostbridge
This fixes nonworking agp-bridge detection, what caused 3D-accelleration not working on some computers.
It also includes older bugfixes like rxvt, so keep care of that, if you installed a different rxvt.

How change from multisession saving to saving on HD?
I have a question regarding Muppy 006.
But first I must say that I've been using it primarily for a while now and it is my savior! My computer is having some major problems and Muppy is the only OS that seems to work on it.
My question is very similar to the one posed in this thread:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=13413
I've been using a multi-session CD and would like to use a save file on a hard drive instead. The only option when rebooting is to save back to the CD. Is there any way to get all the data in my saved sessions transferred to a save file on the HD? I don't even mind booting with a CD. I just don't want to have to burn a fresh Muppy CD and lose everything just for that option to install to the HD again.

I have no experience with multisession.
If I start a new Muppy, I mount the old pup_save.3fs, then copy these folders to the new Muppy:
/root/.mozilla
/root/.sylpheed-2.0
/root/Mail
/root/.gftp
Like this I keep old bookmarks, mails, passwords.
Before that, you should clear the cache of firefox or mozilla, else you would copy 50 MB of useless data.
Re-installing my favourite applications usually is done fast with dotpups.
