Where to find abiword 3.0.1 ?

#1 Post by totolanio »

Hello,

I use abiwrod 3.0.0 but its constantly randomrly crashing.
It has tons of other bugs which waste my time. So I wondered if 3.0.1 would fix these bugs and where to find the pet for this.

Thanks if you know

Hello, totolanto.

I don't think Puppy has a 3.0.1 version for Abiword yet. Besides, with Abiword, odd-
numbered versions are interim, beta versions. The official release versions are the
even-numbered ones. The Abiword 3.0.2 version isn't out yet, is it?

Puppy has a couple of variants of Abiword 3.0. Both have worked on my set-up,
with more recent Pups. For ex.
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... ost#777342
from member "Médor". The other Abiword 3.0 sfs that I know of is from member
"Shinobar".

Alternatively, you can download and install OpenOffice or LibreOffice if you have
big needs (large documents) or for shorter texts, try the excellent (IMO) TED word
processor.

The Geany editor, even, can be useful to write letters, memos and notes, if you don't
have to format any of the text. Hint: If you install its plugins, it becomes almost as good
as a word processor.

Finally, some Puppies come with the SeaMonkey browser suite, and the SeaMonkey
suite offers an excellent html editor called "composer". Or is it "compozer" ? Anyway,
that's just details, it is very good for writing web sites and such. Plus html is a universal
format nowadays, isn't ? ;) You could write an entire novel in composer, and later
convert it to docx format. (Just a thought.)

I hope the above gets you un-stuck. :)

BFN.

thanks for a detailed answer like this one

No 3.0.2 yet apparently

I use Lx tahr pup (so 6.0.X) so I got 3.0.0 abiword preinstalled and it keeps crashing and bugging. Before that I used only libreoffice but it's much heavier and with abiword, it's more practical... until it crashes. There are problems with copy pastes and other minor things which are really annoying.
So I won't try the sfs because I don't think it will solve anything lol.

I want to style my text though !

Can you give a link for TED on puppy ? I don't know how to compile it and can't find it in the package manager nor on the forum

Or is there a previous version of abiword I could find there ? i tried to find 2.8.6 as mentioned somewhere but I gave up because it's too tedious to find :'(

PS : thanks to you I searched for others programs and found Lyx and Rtfedit which I'm trying right now (rtfedit is super mega fast)

Hello, totolanto.

TED is here: http://www.nllgg.nl/Ted/#How_to_install_Ted

Since you're using lxTahr Pup 6, you should be able to use this package OOTB:
http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/editors/ted/ted-2.23-i386.deb
(Sorry, I can't get the URL function to work properly in this message.)

I'd suggest that you download the *.deb package and then double click on it. This action
will install it automatically in your pup. Very simple. (Default language: American English)

Alternatvely, in Jan. 2014, I made a pet package of TED for French and English, which
I just put online again here:
-- https://www.adrive.com/public/QaJRFV/te ... -EN_FR.pet --
IIRC it's the same version of TED, but French may be set as the the default language.

Further down the TED page, there's a list of languages, spellers, converters, etc.,
that you may or may not need.

I hope this helps.

Bye for now.

Ok thank you I installed it and it works fine.
It can replace abiword well then !

Although I tried RtfEditor and it had custom styles. I spent 1 hour making them and I lost everythin when I tried to reopen the file lol. I guess it's because the file was made within abiword (and since it had some problems etc...).

So I dunno if I'll use RtfEditor or TED because they are very light both but Rtf has styles. I need to see if one is buggy or not.

PS : I also tried Lyx but it keeps saying I miss some files :'( I installed a pet file from this forum though

Hello again, totolanto.

By "styles", I suppose that you mean templates for, say, a press release, a career or
college résumé, or a letter to your landlord? :)

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but there's probably a hundred
ready-made letters for all kinds of situations at http://www.letter-samples.com

I'd suggest that you open your TED and your browser, display a letter template from
that site, and then you copy and paste it in your TED editor from your browser. After
that, in TED, you can edit it for your particular situation or purpose.

BTW, that site is very nicely done. I think I'll bookmark it for myself, too. :)

Concerning LyX: I've never used it, but from what I've read, it's a LaTeX-type editor.
That means that it's not a "Wysiwyg" ("What you see is what you get") type of word
processor. You have to introduce special codes in the text itself to get italics, bold,
point-form buttons, etc.

From http://puppylinux.org/wikka/lyx :
"LyX is a document editor [for] the advanced typesetting system LaTeX."

As I understand it, LyX -- and LaTeX generally-- , is something you use once your
text is entirely written, and you want to go the extra mile to get a fabulous printout.
It's a typesetting editor, not a regular word-processor or text-editor.

As I said, I never used it, but I tried to install it once, and like you, I got messages
about missing libraries and stuff. So I aborted the project. IIRC, LyX a pretty big
package with lots of libraries that Puppy doesn't provide natively. But some people
swear by it!

I hope this helps. BFN.

By styles I meant when you apply a style like "title" or "header" to your selection, it turns it into a preset format, like this :

Title --> I. Title

It's possible in libreofficte writer for example even if it's ultra non intuitive and I never bothered to waste my time on that.

In abiword too but it's not really well made imo.

In Ted I think it's not available.

In Lyx it looks like it relies on this system as its core design. Also there are templates as you showed (for letters etc). But if you didn't make it work neither, I won't bother much with it :'(
I took it from there http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 431#864431
I wanted to use Lyx because I'm writing long texts from 0 and I keep modifying stuff in an "unorganised" way, and if it could be automatically styled (put in bold the title etc), it would help me tremendously to create the text faster.

about Abiword 3.0.1

#8 Post by Pelo »

about Abiword version 3.0.1 needs GTK3. I have been using version 2.8.6 untill now. Tahrpup 6.0 should able to run 3.0.1 but there is no interest in doing so. Version 3.0.1 has a larger coverage of (exotic) languages, but do you need it ?
AbiWord 3.0.1 has been released. Provides many bug fixes by Hubert Figuière (but none of interest for me)
Read the release announcement http://www.abisource.com/release-notes/3.0.0.phtml
Version 3.0.1 project is mainly to get multi-users working the same document.
When a Puppy does not want to spend a penny in an office suite, I install goffice-lucid-528-ja-2.sfs: 7212 K , that 's enough for me.

PS : Please note Windows users: Due to lack of Windows developers on the project, the latest version for Windows is 2.8.6
. And Puppy typists should satisfy with it too. :)

@Capt'ain Troll (i.e. Pelo):

You can always compile Abiword-3.x with the option:
./configure --with-gtk2
See:
./configure --help :!:

The lastest windows's version is 3.0.0
http://www.abisource.com/release-notes/3.0.0.phtml
Unicode Support for Windows

AbiWord 3.0.0 becomes the first release of AbiWord having the complete native Unicode support for Windows.

Cordialement,
Médor.

Download AbiWord
Our latest stable release is version 3.0.1. It's available for a number of languages and operating systems. Release Notes | Changelog | Download.
Please note Windows users: Due to lack of Windows developers on the project, the latest version for Windows is 2.8.6. Download the installer.

2.8.6 won't crash !

the main difference between 3.0.1 and 2.8.6 is that 2.8.6 won't crash !
Don't believe that Microsoft Word and Libre Office are free of bugs..
More than 500 bugs are still alive in Libre Office
Mainly in formating tools.
In Abiword too, space is not a formating tool. Most of people use spaces to align their text, its not really a bug..

I've reverted my Tahr 6.0.5's version 3.0 of abiword back to 2.8.6 and its running much better. In 3.0 open a doc and draw a textbox and it locked up. The other day after around 3 pages of text and clicking save it just crashed. 2.8.6 remains the 'stable' version IMO.

myspell (en-GB) from PPM providing spell check ok. Edited /usr/share/abiword-2.8/templates/normal.awt to change the en-US to en-GB and set the default font from 12 to 16

I have yet to find a "stable" version of ABI Word. I think 3.0.1 may very well be the most stable, now.

2.8.6 has been the most stable for me.

With 3.0 in the latest Tahr just opening a doc and drawing a textbox is enough for it to lockup.

More usually however I don't use either abiword or gnumeric, and prefer Libre Office instead - Portable version on HDD, alongside portable firefox, portable google chrome, portable gimp, portable Xara ....etc.

Libre Office will prevent any Puppy running RAM.

Libre Office will prevent any Puppy running RAM.
A Puppy with Libre office loose the advantage to be born Puppy :( and get the OS a simple typing machine for typists.
No need of 64 bits, ten fingers will be enough, twenty will be too much.

3.0.1 is multi-users

#19 Post by Pelo »

Important feedback : Abiword 2.8.6 was running as well. Everybody is happy with Abiword. ABIword is mature again ?
What is the difference between 2.8.6 and 3.0.1 ?
3.0.1 is multi-users (working on the same document). Read Abiword how-to.
