Getting tp-link tl-wn722n to work

#1 Post by rcracerguy »

I'm brand new to linux. I've got lucid puppy 5.2.8. How do I get my wifi stick to be read? I got the ath9k_htc-fireware.pet and didn't seem to help. I have no idea what I'm doing. Can anyone help.

:D Welcome Mate.

If you're gonna stick with 528, I think that stick requires a slightly newer kernel, something like Lupu3hd found here.

Don't remember. Should I just try reloading puppy? Should it read the stick when I put it in?

Leave the stick in and reboot 3-Headed Dog.

When you get to the desktop, copy'n paste (paste = both buttons simultaneously) this into that terminal thingy on your desktop, then go into your "home" icon, open lsmod.txt and tell us whether ath9k_htc is listed inside. There should be one or more lettered items to the far right of the two sets of numbers..

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep ath > lsmod.txt
If you've got somebody, rt-clk the desktop >> Setup >> Internet Connection Wizard >> Internet by wired or wireless LAN >> "Simple" and tell us if there's a wireless interface available.

If there, click it and follow the prompts..

No. Just uninstall the .pet in puppy package manager. There is a uninstall button in it. Hit it. You will see the pet. Left click the line. Follow the prompts.

While 3-Headed Dog may be the best for your hw, you should give the retro version here a spin. CD's are cheap enough nowadays..

Try Precise or Tahrpup

#16 Post by mikeslr »

Hi rcracerguy,

I'm afraid that Semme was right, but perhaps too optimistic. I did a Wellminded Search on Atheros AR9271. Just plug a keyword or two into the search box at http://wellminded.net63.net/ --its a dedicated google search of all the post on this forum. It mostly produced negative results regarding anything involving ath9_htc.

An actual google search revealed that there have been Linux drivers and firmware for Atheros AR9271 since kernel 2.6.35. Which doesn't mean they immediately made their way into Puppies, nor every Puppy version.

The most promising report was that by puppyto that precise 5.7.1 recognized his adapter. http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 339#731339. He refers to it as the AR9271 in the post just above it.

I'd suggest you try either a Precise or a Tahr Pup. Precise 5.7.2 was, primarily a "bug fix" of 5.7.1. It is likely that the devs building Tahr Pups used Precise Pup as a model of what drivers and firmware to install. You'll find several version of precisepups and tahrpups in the Projects and Derivatives Sections. X preceeding a name means it uses Xfce as Window Manager; Lx means it uses Openbox with LxPanel. These are just different GUI's.

I own a TP-LINK TL-WN721N which also uses the ath9k_htc driver. It works OOTB for me in lupu3hd-5.2.8.7 with PeasyWiFi.
