Be aware that Puppy Linux it's a particular one, and a bit different from what you might be reading in that book.
Some commands may not exist or things are achieved in a different way, that can give you a wrong feeling about Puppy and about Linux in general.

What does PAE stand for?

Sorry, you have a computer which doesn't like Linux

Hi Tigersong,

I wish I had read this post before your other one. My wife has a Toshiba Satellite L775. As far as I know its specs are the same as your 755, except that it has a larger screen.

Edit:
I have only been able to boot two Puppies on it: Carolina Vanguard. Edited after checking my posts about it: See posts here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 655#824655 and here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 430#824863.

Joe0855, however, seems to have been able to get Fatdog64-520 Final be fully functional after downloading wifi debs. See http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 917#562917, especially for links to the debs. [Hint: if you try this Pup, now 5 years old, and wifi is your only method of reaching the web, download and store the debs before booting into Fatdog. You'll find links to Fatdog640-520 at the bottom of this webpage: http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/web/latest.html It is possible that newer versions of Fatdog may work --links at bottom of same page-- although I doubt Fatdog64-700 will. It was built using a different method.

Edited. Similarly, you might try JustLightHouse. It, and the Fatdog64's, with the exception of 700, were built using Slackware binaries. In fact, after I posted this, I tried and successfully booted JustLightHouse on my wife's computer. You'll find it here.http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=99712. It took some fiddling in order to get any sound, and even that was hard to hear. Hopefully, there are other thing which can be done to improve sound output.

Toshiba does not provide Linux drivers for the hardware it includes. That means that Linux "fans" have to voluntarily build them.

If you need wifi immediately (that is, you can't connect via ethernet at all) I wouldn't bother to boot your Ubuntu either. Although Ubuntu's repo will include the necessary wifi driver, its ISO doesn't, and you'll have to guess which driver your system needs.

Only the following two distros have provided full functionality on initial bootup on my wife's Toshiba Satellite L775. PinguyOS, http://pinguyos.com/
and http://zorin-os.com/. Both are essentially Ubuntu remasters: they include everything a Window refugee needs while using both their own and Ubuntu's software easily obtained thru their package managers.

Zorin is more up-to-date in its publications, has both 32-bit and 64-bit versions --which have a "look-changer" enabling you to have either an XP, a Windows7 or a Linux look-- and two specialized 32-bit versions, one Lite and the other Educational, all free. There is also a premium ($15) version which add a "mac look".

After using Windows software to defrag and resize the 3rd Windows partition to create "unused space" I installed Zorin Core into that space. But be careful. If you're not, any Ubuntu based distro will eat your entire hard drive.

I suggest, rather, that you set your bios to boot first from a USB-Key, and use either Rufus or LinuxLiveUSB Creator--free, downloadable, Windows programs-- to install Zorin to such USB-Key. Check persistent during the install process and you can run it indefinitely as a LiveUSB. Plug it in, boot & you have Zorin. Leave it out, boot and you have Windows7.

Ask on the Zorin Forum how to download or save datafiles other than in your home/User's folder.

What's a Fatdog? Or a repo? Remember, I'm completely new to Linux. All these terms that're second nature to you are alien to me.
which have a "look-changer" enabling you to have either an XP, a Windows7 or a Linux look
Any chance I could use my current picture?

Try JustLightHouse

#27 Post by mikeslr »

Hi Again Tigersong,

First, re-read my post above. I edited it after double-checking what problem my wife's Toshiba had with Carolina. Turned out that there was only one, easily solvable as the two added links show. [I was mis-recalling which computer Carolina had a display problem with: it was an Acer Aspire One D270].

And before getting to your specific questions, let me suggest that you try Just-Lighthouse64-603, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 991#849991 which I was able to boot on my wife's Toshiba Satellite L775 and appears to have run well. I figured that as long as I was going to refresh my memory about how to boot that computer from a USB-key, I might as well also see if Just-Lighthouse would properly function. Note, the 64 in its name reflects that it is a 64-bit operating system which can make use of all the computer's processors and RAM.

The easiest way to explore which, if any, Linux distribution will work best with your Toshiba is to test them by “burning

Ummm... lots of good advice here, but the original poster did ask for a LIVE cd distro.

Just try one and play with it.

Puppy Linux is sorta like those potato chips, you won't be satisfied with just one :-)

I didn't insist on anything. I merely suggested a "current" pup.

Heck, Fatdog's (64-701) not that easy, but it's streamlined and has what you desire.

It's as well, equipped to deal with an EFI boot..
