Atari 800 Emulator (Puppy Lighthouse 64)

#1 Post by David Andrew »

I created a .deb package for the latest stable version of the Atari 800 emulator, which emulates a series of the Atari 8-bit line of home computers.

It's pretty good. Not as user friendly as the 8-bit Atari emulator I was accustomed to on Windows, but it does everything that needs to be done.

Once installed, run "Atari800" from the command line if its not showing up in your menu. After the first run, it will create a config file in your root directory. You won't be able to run anything at the first run, because configuration of the config file is important.

First and foremost, you need the Atari 8-bit ROM files (not included in the package). They are available from the same website of this emulator:

http://atari800.sourceforge.net/

The most important step is to set up your config file to set up the ROM's. This is documented here:

https://github.com/petrockblog/RetroPie ... 0-and-5200

Once set up, you can further edit your config file to match your computers setup. To fully enjoy full screen, you need to change the full screen resolution to match the exact dimensions of your desktops. For me, sound and joypad worked out of the box.

Upon startup, the F1 key will lead you to an options screen from where you can run your desired game. You can also change some settings from there instead of the config file. The other "F" keys act as the Atari's "select", "start" etc...keys. Pressing "Alt + F" will switch between fullscreen mode.

Ignore my package, I compiled it without OpenGL enabled.

There's a much better Slackware package with OpenGL enabled:

http://slackonly.com/pub/packages/14.1- ... /atari800/

It's a 14.1 package, but it works perfectly fine with LH64 Mariner. The steps in my first post still apply.

On a side note, I've been trying out a lot of retro emulators recently, and I think this is the best 8-bit Atari emulator out there for Linux.

If anyone can make this into a Pup, I'll be grateful forever and ever. Still got my 800XL in a box in my parents house. First system I ever had, and still my all time favourite...
Precise Puppy 5.7.1 on Thinkpad X201 (such fast, very wow)
