GetFlash Install Flashplayer ...

#1 Post by as77 »

.
... a fine step towards usability by a layman. (Not yet reached thus far...)

BUT sometimes GetFlash very rapidly tells you something like: "cannot connect to server, check your internet connection". Web browsing however keeps working fine all the time, maybe not very fast but anyhow.
Q Are there some timing issues?

(Another similar oddity on some Puppies' detecting 3G USB modems: "sorry ... not detected". But right after that Pupdial reports the modem correctly and connects)

Apropos mobile broadband software: MWconn is in Windows THE program to use. Not the ones by service operators. MWconn re-connects you automatically after any disconnect. These disconnects come also with Pupdial.
This MWconn should be available as "Ixconn" for Linux, haven't tried yet

Are you referring to v1.5-1, page two of the "Internet" section?

Make sure you are using Getflash V1.5-1
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=74491

They keep moving the Flashplayer server location, so Getflash has to be updated for new location.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

frequent disconnects

Well not so fine if you go from page to page. This morning checking some prices on 19 pages of a website I needed five (5) reconnects.
Right after that staying on my net-tv www.tv7.fi not a single disconnect in 40 minutes

Could not make ixconn (.deb) work.
To stay connected must set a continuous ping (ping 00.00.00.00 > /dev/null ... select a proper IP ...)

Puppy Package Manager says my GetFlash version is V1.5-1, and yet when I run it there is displayed "unable to connect to server, check your internet connection".
I'm running within "Slacko-5.7.0-pae".

Successfully installed getflash-1.5-6, and used it to update to flashplayer11-11.2.202.460, but all is not well. :(
When I try to play videos at Youtube, they sometimes pause for long periods, or won't play at all.
It doesn't "just work".

Struggling to even post this here.
Firefox pausing, and failing = "Unable to connect".

getflash installs the plugin flashplayer
Regarding the use of the plugin with a web browser, that's another subject.

Used a 2nd Puppy to delete the Slacko pupsave and restore a backup copy from last December.
Once back to the old arrangement, I'm still getting "Unable to connect" in Firefox and "Pale Moon".

Here in Precise-5.7.1, the "Nightly" web browser is behaving well at the Puppy Forums.
At Youtube it's being reported that both the browser and the plugins are out-of-date.

Guess I'll need to try my more recently made "tahr-6.0-ce_pae" CD-RW.

Guessing IPv6.. Really? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fi ... owsers-can

Although this shouldn't matter, you pass here (127.0.0.1)?

Your plugin is in fact current, correct?

Used this to clear cookies and cache [and the others too]...
Firefox and Palemoon now appear to be functioning as they aught. :D

Not sure how to do this test, but looks like I got it right and the tests are PASSED [on the site address you gave]. :D

Visit the "about flash" page and check your version against the "get flash" page .. Meaning >> a quick Google.

According to THIS PAGE, the latest Flash Player is version 11.2.202.460...
And according to my PPM, the latest I have installed is version 11.2.202.359.

If I attempt to run "Menu->Internet->GetFlash", it reports "Unable to contact server".
Aught I to yet again install GetFlash-1.5-6.pet?

Because the folks @ Adobe are such tools, become self sufficient and go with the manual method. Pfind will tell you where libflashplayer.so is located.. Simply extract and replace this single file from the latest tar.gz.

Not so simple [for me] it seems.
I downloaded the latest [.tar.gz for other Linux] from this page, [Version 11.2.202.460], and unpacked it, then replaced the file "/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so" with the file unpacked [had the same name and size].
When I then tried playing a Youtube video the problem still existed. :(

Do you see the red Adobe plugin icon in my url bar? Right click, allow and remember..

And now would be a good time to mention the browser versions you're running..

1. "now would be a good time to mention the browser versions you're running.."
a. Firefox: 17.0.11
b. Palemoon: 24.7.1 (x86)

2. "Do you see the red Adobe plugin icon in my url bar?"
I don't understand:
"the red Adobe plugin icon"... [where would I see this? What does it look like? Obviously it's red]
"my url bar"... [what is this? Where would I see it?]

My bad. The "plug-in" icon under the "b" of Bookmarks.

Rather than upgrading your browsers, perhaps you'd fair better with a custom user.js?

http://kb.mozillazine.org/User.js_file

Code: Select all

//
// user.js: Personal prefs which mozilla shouldn't overwrite.
//

// Override the default user-agent string:
user_pref("general.useragent.override", "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:38.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/38.0");
This would spoof your user agent and, for me @ least, works in shutting Google the hell up.
