Erratic Intel 3945 Wifi on Dell Inspiron

#1 Post by rcarrilero »

Hello!
First of all please excuse my English, I know it's far, far away from perfection.
I'm new to puppy, I started trying 2.13, now testing 2.14 and really entusiasthic with this marvel, although, have a little problem with my wireless card, that didn't found solution in the forums.

I have a Dell inspiron 6400 with built in intel 3945 PCI wifi card.

It works perfect on windows but seems to get loosy on puppy.
When puppy starts WIFI led keeps off, blinking one instant every second, more or less.

After running wifi wizard, or the other tools provided, it detects the card and awakes it in some way, blinking at a higher rate, maybe 8 - 10 times every second, then it detects wifi and even gets wifi data, but does not allow to connect.

One of every 8 - 10 times I reboot and start again, wifi light keeps on, and
then it allows to connect, this runs for a while, until it again starts
blinking again and loose connection.

I've used also the windows driver, but got the same results.

Does anyone found the same problem?

Unfortunately I'm a linux newbie, so it's difficult for me to try other
solutions, I even get the latest linux drivers from Intel, but I'm not able
to install them.

Any help will be most appreciated, I can use puppy everywere but on my home PC.

Thanks in advance and best regards from Spain.

Ricardo

Hi....

Welcome to the forum :)

I personally would recommend a newer version of Puppy, if at all possible. 2.14 is pretty old and I highly doubt you'll find any (newer) software that will run on it. Try using something like Precise 5.6.1 or 5.7.1, Slacko 5.7 or even Tahr Puppy 6.0.2, if it will run smoothly on your system.

However, if you like 2.14 and want to tty to stay with it, can you open a terminal and post the output of these commands....

Code: Select all

lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2

Code: Select all

dmesg
If you get an error telling you the lspci command is not recognized, try downloading and installing this .pet:

(Copy and paste into your browser. For some reason, the forum software is not turning it into a link...)

Just clicking on it once should start the installation process.

Also, here's a little instruction page that explains how to copy and paste using Puppy's terminal. :)

Regards...

Frisbee or PeasyWifi should help you to keep the connection, in newer puppies, as ardvark told us.

What is the difference with creating a new post ?

When you buy old computers cheap price, as a Dell Latitude D505, would you create new topics or search on old ones ????
Sorry i will not buy a brand new computer with Bluetooh and 3D
The reason is known why devs don't like old computers. OUI clearly ask us to trash them in our french forum. Because old technologies are boring the brain of our devs.
Plaese jump here Dell Inspiron topic 2017
DELL is not ACER (easy connection with my ACER Aspire 1640 born 2004)
