The default printer service in Puppy works easily as it has a wizard. The default printer actually is one for inkjets, and can print to HP without modification. For the setup, choose "local port" and then specify the USB interface - the Wizard will show what to enter for USB.

Todd if you're after a little feedback on custom iso's then here's something that I hope you'll consider.

I was after a lightweight distro that can run off a CF card or USB key on a mini-itx board that'll give a quick boot directly into Firefox in a full screen, so no tool bars etc.

Why?

I would like to conduct a little experiment into reducing the overall footprint of the majority of the computing in our house...i.e the internet. So office based applications to be done by Writely etc, news etc as rss through firefox plugin ins etc.

the ultimate goal would be for me to have media like music etc to be stored centrally with USB keys for local stuff.

Re-creating a web pad for sustainable computing. Using the set up wizards etc for internet connection at first run I couldn't think of too much else that'll need configuring from trying out IPup as a live distro.

Anyway what do you think

when I boot from the flash device, the memory showing is usually just over 100 MB
as far as i know, the jwm memory applet shows the amount of free space in the save file, it has nothing to do with ram (unless you are running totally in ram with no save file, in which case, the ram is the "savefile")

you can start Puppy with only firefox running by editing .xinitrc and replacing exec $CURRENTWM with something like exec firefox

What you are saying explains a lot. (I am able to run Unleashed when I boot from USB no problem.)

I run it from a live CD and its just what i need (Thank you so much Todd ),when i installed it full install while booting till it gets to where it checks for floppy then the following line keeps on scrolling over and over :
/usr/X11R7/bin/xwin line 35 /tmp/kbdextlayout.txt read only
I didn't do anything different than what i did with installing any other versions?!
can you please help me fixing it .
its on a thinkpad /128ram/2gb partition/800mhz

also if its not too much to ask  what to i need to run it from windows using Qemu?
reading what was posted in that thread
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.p ... light=qemu
tried several suggested parameters but it didn't work.
can someone please tell how to do it.
Thank you

EZ, that's a bug, solution:

However, a frugal installation might be better, see:

a while back I posted a sarcastic reply saying "that is not the linux way..." (sorry bout that EZ.anyway i found myself doing the same things when faced with the same problem ,it worked on a full install but i don't know the repercussions of what i did .
what i did was extracting the content of the iso and booted with grub

Code: Select all

root (hd0,3)
  kernel /boot/isolinux/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 rw vga=normal
initrd /boot/isolinux/initrd.gz
what i changed was removing loglevel=3
don't know if that fixed it or before full installing i saved then rebooted and run it then did the install.

another thing that nobody said anything about is that since version 1.08 if i put (vga=771 or 788 or 791) i get nothing but black screen but if i put vga=normal i can see the boot process ,maybe it has something to do with the kernel newer than 2.4.29 or maybe its my ancient monitor ???!!!
God bless us noobs

iPup 1.02 (55.8 MB) w/ Firefox 2.0

#30 Post by Todd »

iPup 1.02 is based on 2.12. I tried to keep everything the same as in 1.01, but ended up adding metamail and gftp.

Website for iPup. . .

#31 Post by Todd »

I have created a website for iPup. The .org, .net and .com domains were taken by cyber-squatters, so I selected http://www.ipup.info/. This domain is actually just being forwarded to http://www.toddrichardson.com/ipup/, so you can access it either way.

Sincerely,

Todd Richardson

Mr.BarryK posted in the news site:
More kernel modules compiled
Thursday, November 9, 2006, 08:23 PM
I have compiled the sis7019 sound driver, Linux-wlan-ng (USB only) and rt73 drivers.
http://www.puppyos.net/news/index.php?m ... 110-160925
if its not too much to ask (if it can be done),can rt73 drivers be compiled for ipup separately as a dotpup?

Thank you.

To be perfectly honest. . .

To be perfectly honest, I don't know how. However, that has never stopped me before. I will look into it and see what I can do.

iPup 1.03

#34 Post by Todd »

I have been thinking a lot about the next version of iPup. It has been my "modus operandi" to parallel each of Barry's releases of Puppy Linux with a updated release of iPup. I have worked on the assumption that I need to keep things small. Because of this, I did not include "zdrv" in iPup 1.02. (I assumed that those that want it would get the .sfs version of it.) Am I correct in this assumption? I ask this question because it appears that the 2.13 version of Puppy will not contain xorg. Personally, I use xvesa, so this isn't a problem.

Sincerely,

Todd

Where did you hear that? Barry just made a post in his blog the other day about the Xorg keyboard configuration, so I doubt this. :?

Todd, AFAIK, 2.13 will have the same 'zdrv' optional package as 2.12.

This is the way it works - what Barry has done is to put all Xorg video drivers (except for a couple) into the zdrv file. However, the Xorg program files are in Puppy 2.12. This shaved a MB or two off the size of Puppy in RAM. 8)

xorg and xvesa

#37 Post by Todd »

I have been doing some research on toolkits (GTK and QT) and the way I understand it, xwindows (xlibs) is the base with the toolkit sitting on top. With Puppy, (if I understand) ROX sits on top of the toolkit (GTK). How do xorg and xvesa fit into this picture?

Hi Todd,

I really like the your iPup :-). I'm trying to do the same thing for EduPup that is keeping it as small as possible and install all the stuff for the kids on pup_save.3fs file. So it will be possible to run this distro also on old pc with low ram.
Do you think you can share your packages list ? I really would appreciate it !
I will change something as, for example, Firefox 2.0 for Firefox 1.5.3 so I could install ProCon and some blacklist addon to implement parental control for the kids.

Thanks in advance.

Cannot install Adobe Flash

#40 Post by cindyq »

I'm using iPup and really like it.! It run really well installed on an old Dell Latitude laptop.

A problem I'm having is installing Flash. After downloading the installer from Adobe and running ./flashplayer-installer I get this error message:

Code: Select all

sh-3.00# ./flashplayer-installer
./flashplayer-installer: line 69: iconv: command not found
./flashplayer-installer: line 76: [: `)' expected, found 2

ERROR: Your glibc library is older than 2.2.
       Please update your glibc library.
I'm not a Linux expert by any means and don't know where to find this library to download or whether installing it might mess things up.

Todd or someone, any suggestions please?
