OK, I am obviously missing a crucial detail to do with CUPS and HPLIP etc, and could use some sage advice please:
I have a working HP Officejet 6500 E709n printer which I regularly use with Win XP.
(One of the few remaining hurdles left, for me to abandon XP completely in favour of Puppy Linux is reliable printing/ scanning & faxing via this HP Officejet 6500 E709n all in one wireless printer.)
I am running Precise Puppy 5.4.3 and 5.7.1 on various machines on my lan. I have one week old (liveCD) installations, which are pretty clean, neat and for the most part unmolested.
From a web browser on Puppy, I can see and interact with the Officejet 6500 E709n's web interface pages.
I have PUPPY's native CUPS utility running and apparently willing to work. I have installed HPLIP 3.12.2 from the PET pkg manager. Without HPLIP, my printer didn't show up in the list hence HPLIP was installed.
In CUPS web interface, I go to 'add a printer' which, since the installation of HPLIP now offers me HPLIP printers as an option. I select HPLIP and choose HP Officejet 6500 E709n from the list. Then I am offered a page to enter a URL to my printer. This is where I go off the rails I think.
In the dialog box to fill in the link to the printer, the letters 'hp' are already present. All the accompanying examples however have a formal URL look about them but don't work if followed literally, which may mean abandoning the offered 'hp' or not. I have tried the following with no evident connection to the printer being created:
http://192.168.55.103:631/ipp/
http://192.168.55.103:631/ipp/port1
ipp://192.168.55.103/ipp/
hp192.168.55.103
hp:192.168.55.103
Mostly I get test print jobs just hanging indefinitely, with no diagnostics offered but in the case of 'hp192.168.55.103' I get a printer cannot be found message.
My question then is:
What form SHOULD the URL to the printer take in this case?
Your wisdom and advice please...........
Thanks,
Brian H.
How to print to wireless HP Officejet 6500 E709n?
Turns out that the correct format for my installation is:
socket://192.168.55.103:9100
The doc that made the difference for me was:
http://www.cups.org/documentation.php/network.html
Hope this is useful to some folks,
Cheers,

@uxhamby: Your source for information about printing in Puppy is here. Under "Things to Know", note #5 and #6.
In most cases, a networked HP printer should be auto-detected by CUPS.
At the bottom of the page is a link to an HP printer driver PET that will work with your Officejet. You don't need to install anything from a PPM.
