Xerox Phaser 6130: how to use it? (Solved)

#1 Post by bambuko »

Tahrpup 6.0.1
No Firewall
Xerox Phaser 6130, laser printer, usb connected

Tried CUPS "Find New Printers" (many times) with "No printers found"

Tried forum search (using advanced google) - no mention of my Xerox

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

If this printer is connected by USB, it should automatically appear under Add Printer at the top of the list.

If it does not, reboot the printer and try again. Are there settings in its control panel that select the connection?

Your firewall has nothing to do with the problem.

at the top of the list (local printers) I have:
CUPS-PDF
followed by:
SCSI printer
Serial Port #1

I don't recognise any of these as my Xerox printer?

It also lists "discovered network printers"
rcrsn51 wrote:...If it does not, reboot the printer and try again...
didn't seem to make any difference...

The only option in setup menu that might have something to do with it was:
USB setup>Adobe Protocol
but I guess this is not what you are asking? anyway - I have left it on "auto"
btw the other options were:
TBCP
Binary
BCP
Standard

Thanks Peter, but I am guessing? that before I even think about the dirvers? I need to be able to see the printer in CUPS?
or maybe I am talking out of my rear orifice :? (wouldn't be the first time  )

btw - I understand that PPD is not the driver?
...PPD files (not to be confused with drivers) are just text configuration files...

Has this printer worked in other Puppies?

Is your USB printer cable OK? Is it plugged in correctly at both ends?

There were problems with USB detection in early versions of Tahrpup, but it should be OK now.

It never worked in any Puppy (Tharpup 6.0.1 is the first one I am trying it in)
It worked straight out of the box in LinuxMint, and has been for yonks (and still is) working in XP.
All three of them on the same PC, so I doubt it is usb problem?

Tried 5.2.8 today and ... no problem.
CUPS found the printer OK
It didn't have the exact model, but there was an option to point to PPD.

So sounds like it is 6.0.2 problem

Did you install anything into Tahrpup, like Chrome, that might have altered the filesystem?

What install method did you use - full or frugal?

Try a temporary clean install of Tahrpup. Boot off the CD using "puppy pfix=ram".

[Edit] I wonder if there is something in the Update mechanism that is causing the problem.

I have tahrpup 6.0.2 (all of them are full install, originally installed as 6.0 and updated twice) on more than one machine - all of them have the same problem with my printer.
Things I have installed myself were FF and TB, otherwise they are all standard.

I will try clean 6.0 later today and report here.

I have tested Tahrpup 602 PAE from its new ISO and have no problems.

So are you suggesting that it is the updates that are possibly the problem?
I will get new 6.0.2 ISO and try new install.

Yes, but it is just one of several possibilities. The only way to know for sure would be to replicate all the changes you made to your setup.

I just checked a full install of Tahrpup 6.0 and it detected a USB printer OK.

I quickly checked live cd 6.0 PAE and the printer wasn't listed in "add a prinet", but when I tried "find new printers" it found PDF (pdf writer).

You have done full install for your test - do you think it makes a difference?
If yes, I will try full install later, but 5.2.8 was fine when I tried it with live CD so I guess? no?

At this point, my only suggestion would be a clean install of 602.

So far have tried live CD 6.0.2 PAE and unfortunately it didn't work (no sign of the printer)

I will do full install, but I doubt it will make any difference.

Just to set the picture:
printer works fine in XP, LinuxMint, and appears on Puppy 5.2.8

later edit:
as expected it still doesn't work in full install either...

Hi bambuko

You are right. Puppy needs to recognise that a printer is connected before you need a ppd file. I was wondering what happens to the output from dmesg as you plug and unplug your printer. That may give you a clue as to what is going on.
