How to change existing Save file to encrypted?

#1 Post by 01Siberian Husky »

I have puppy Linux and installed it to my USB. The first time it shut down I saved unencrypted. AN oversight now. Is it possible to somehow convert to a password protected boot up sequence?

Just requiring a password does not encrypt the Save file. If you leave the Save file unencrypted but require a password to use it, and then forget the password, it is easy to access the Save file. If you encrypt anything and then forget the password (now actually an encryption key), you've lost everything you encrypted. Unless, of course, you work for the NSA.

The proper way to use Puppy is to only put Puppy-related stuff (settings, installed programs, etc.) in the Save file, and leave it unencrypted. Personal stuff, you put in a separate partition or even in a separate device, and encrypt it. Puppy will boot faster if you use it that way, and the encrypted partition can easily be accessed by another OS with the proper encryption program and password.
