flash working with youtube and iceweasel 10.0.2

#121 Post by mcewanw »

http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/flashplugin-nonfree
Yes, the above flash plugin downloader worked with iceweasel 10.0.12, which I'm posting from now:

First I added the following to /etc/apt/sources.list:

Code: Select all

deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main
deb http://mozilla.debian.net/ squeeze-backports iceweasel-release
You can install this iceweasel with the following commands:

$ apt-get update
$ apt-get install -t wheezy-backports iceweasel

Once you download the flashplugin-nonfree package somewhere, just right click on it in Xfe and choose "install/upgrade".

Actually, I needed to also apt-get wget and a few other dependencies since the first install failed saying it needed these, so I just needed to do an "apt-get -f install" command first, which fetches the missing dependencies, before trying again. It seems to be working fine now, though I've hardly tested it much yet. Also, I want to find out where debian actually puts the flashplugin out of curiosities sake...

Youtube playing is using quite a bit more resources (20 to 30 percent or more it seems) than in Puppy Guydog 5.01, however, but similar to most all other puppies. Not sure what is special about Guydog 5.01 - Iguleder does comment something about the Xorg high used. Can't imagine guydog includes any special graphics driver that happens to work for this old machine. Pemasu's older dpup exprimo that uses the same kernel as Guydog 5.01 has similar youtube flash performance to debian light squeeze, so something different in guydog that provides the improved flash performance. Having said that, flash does work well enough, manages fullscreen on this Pentium M 1.6Gbyte non-pae machine at close to 100% CPU. That's normal out of the box for most puppies other than guydog. I'm just checking with top quickly though, and maybe there is something wrong with my measurement. It seems to play smoothly anyway.

Hope you get round to putting iceWM on this squeeze version too; I'm looking forward to that since I imagine I might use this distribution as my main one for a while.

Maybe worth then considering adding other apps that use Fox toolkit such as as rezound, shutterbug, Googles, fxite, fox_calculator etc; some of which are recently mentioned here, and elsewhere on the forum:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 869#703869

EDIT: I imagine one problem with Debian base is getting codecs like mp3 to work with the likes of rezound (assuming it does) - I wouldn't know.

Toni I need your help now.

I want to test this one.

http://vsido.org/template/index.html

Being based on Debian it will most likely
also have the live directory which you version
also have.

Have yoo tested it if works to rename live dir
to squeezylive and get a working os
or does it get confused at updates or at apt-get
and similar expecting the old name live for the directory?

I know that SichGut told me that I could experiment with it
but being as lazy as I am ....

Hi, Nooby :)

This is the way to use debian live in different folder (/debian-wheezy for example). Move live folder in /debian-wheezy and use this boot code:

Code: Select all

title Wheezy 1
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
kernel /debian-wheezy/live/vmlinuz1 boot=live config persistence swapon live-media-path=/debian-wheezy/live/ quickreboot autologin
initrd /debian-wheezy/live/initrd1.img
boot
Mcewanw, thanks for the tips and the information about flashplayer.

Cheers, Toni

debian-squeeze-live-LXDE-SFS.iso - version 6.08

#126 Post by sklimkin »

Newly made his debian-squeeze-live-LXDE-SFS.iso - version 6.08.

Wanted to get a system Debian, in which live-boot the old way created DIR's /live/image and /live/cow - but today it is no longer possible.
Set of Debian repositories only live-boot ver.3.x
Install live-boot ver.2.x manually as impossible - the system breaks down.
Thus the developer live-tools Daniel Baumann securely snapped wonderful opportunity dynamically to connect and disconnect while work-session the various programs packaged in squashfs and placed directly into the ISO-image or next to it.

There are features in my new debian-squeeze-live-LXDE-SFS.iso:
0. The system has three user: root (root) user (user) q (111111)
1. I chose desktop LXDE - it probably the most "native" for Debian.
2. if not select at Startup 1st item, but 2nd, 3rd or 4th, the system
(bypassing the user selection screen slim) is loaded to the user <user>
and "talking on the English" - menus, prompts, and so on.
When choosing the top entry of the 1st boot menu then system "talking on the Russian".
3. added applet free memory - it will be visible in the bottom panel:
Menu -> System Tools -> freememapplet (took it out of the Puppy-Linux)
the screenshot showed his by mouse-cursor - bottom right.
4. to change the of the screen resolutions there grandr (lxrandr does not work - reason?):
Menu -> Other -> grandr or top panel grandr ("Multiple Screens")
5. icons sfs-get and live-save on the desktop have yet decorative
character (difficult to abandon the idea "load-on-the-fly") - let them live .
6. Network in a virtual machine "Network Connection: eth0" is connected automatically .
7. user switching: Menu -> Logout -> Logout -> ( select box slim)
8. to install programs from the Debian repositories need to open terminal and give him commands:
apt-get install debian-archive-keyring
apt-get update
(to reduce the size of the ISO-image, files have been deleted from /var/log and /var/lib manually removed)
and then install the needed software: apt-get install <PROGRAM>
and do not forget to clean up after installation /var/cache/apt/: apt-get clean
9. in the creation of ISO-image in chroot-environment added the following software:
dialog dbus xxkb squashfs-tools dpkg
network-manager wget net-tools wireless-tools
xserver-xorg-core (--no-install-recommends)
xinit menu menu-xdg
lxde (--no-install-recommends)
grandr gparted isomaster mc rxvt-unicode openssh-server (also-client)
leafpad (default for Xorg) gpicview dillo xz-utils arj zip
live-boot live-config slim
10. file size is 182.8 MB but in its composition have DIR /_sfs size of 17.3 MB
and /live/sfs-tools.squashfs size of 780 KB, i.e. ISO size can be reduced to 165 MB.
11. By repeating a Debian-Wheezy can get close in size ISO-image.

Hi, Nooby,
yes it is the first squeeze iso with pae kernel. There was no plan to make wheezy when I started this topic and I didn't add squeeze in the name.

nonetworking boot parameter

#131 Post by emil »

Although nobody might use this oldstable squeeze live CD I share my experience to make wifi work with this version:

It is imperative to add the boot parameter nonetworking to the boot entry
Otherways the live config tools overwrite the /etc/network/interfaces et every fresh boot.

It seems it was (is?) an undocumented boot paramter - read here:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-live/201 ... 00031.html

my grub4dos entry now looks like

Code: Select all

title Light-Debian-Core-Test
 root=(hd0,3)
kernel /live/vmlinuz boot=live config persistent nonetworking swapon quickreboot noprompt autologin
 initrd /live/initrd.img
 boot
I have an old laptop and I needed to install the b43 low power drivers (with apt-get from non free repositories)
https://wiki.debian.org/bcm43xx

then I set up wifi drom the commandline
https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse#Command_Line

my /etc/network/interfaces looks like

Code: Select all

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
    wpa-ssid dummynetworkname
    wpa-psk dummypwd
now it works like charm!
maybe this can save some time, sometimes to someone.
cheers

Toni programming should be fun
so no need to rush things :)

I trust we all love that you are at it
when you feel for it.

And thanks to Emil for the nonetworking tip.

So if I add this one the wifi woudl work
and it would not stop the cable connection?

Would save other great amount of time
to find that boot parameter.

New DebianDog-Squeeze-Jwm-Icewm.iso uploaded.

Changes from previous version (mostly latest Wheezy changes - Wheezy both versions will be updated also in the next few days):

1. Compression method changed from xz to gzip for the main module, all available for download squashfs modules and all module creating scripts. Iso size is now 173Mb (or 40Mb bigger just because of compression method change but works well and fast on very old hardware - P-III 600Mhz and 128Mb RAM + 500Mb swap file). It is Debian old-stable system and old program versions and I doubt anyone will use it on modern hardware but in such case it could be easy changed from the user again to maximum xz compressed system.
2. Make Save File - default label option changed to show empty label.
3. New much improved mount-wizard from Sfs and Fred. Old mount wizard available as separate deb package for download and can be installed together with the new one.
4. Frisbee - patched for bash upgrade
5. move-in-crypt - manage encrypted save file utility
6. Auto-fix dependencies after installing deb package script with GUI and right click file(s)/directory option for Rox and XFE.
7. Changes for ffconvert and probepart as separate packages.
8. Improved ffmpeg2sfs.
9. improved mountlink (for porteus boot).
10. New gtkdialog-splash version.
11. Added pppoe and pppoeconf.
12. Improved /opt/bin/mnt-backing script.
13. Custom compiled pup-volume-monitor (the previous one was not working for porteus-boot with encrypted save file. Now works).
14. Uploaded DEVX squashfs module for download.
15. Rox-filer changed to version 2.11

New DebianDog-Squeeze uploaded here.
Almost all updates from Wheezy version added.

Changes:
1. edit-sfs
2. Security fixes for wget and bash. For old iso version both available for download bash_4.1-3+deb6u2_i386-security-fix-debian-lts.deb, wget_1.12-2.2_i386.deb
3. Small configuration changes for mtpaint and jwm-theme-change in Jwm version.
4. Added LTS Squeeze repository. You can upgrade the system from time to time to get the latest official fixes.
5. RemasterCow with deleted (whiteout) files record option.
6. Replace mnt-img with filemnt in Jwm version with this configuration.
7. apt2sfs - added np-dpkg-registration by default (makes possible to update dpkg status with the included programs) and checking for dpkg errors (like not enough free space to extract packages).
8. loadmodule + initrd1.img - moded to support whiteout (deleted) files by default and replacing initrd1.img in separate kerenel modules + replacing initrd1.xz with systemd boot option.
9. Improved portablesfs-loadsfs-fuse.deb. More information here.
10. Reinstall all packages converted from Puppy with moded version to prevent later conflicts with official deb packages and edit all packages on the site (included, extra, testing...). Especially frisbee and sns.
11. Replace included zenity-portable with deb package conflicting with later installed zenity versions. Why we need this change read here.
12. apt-get upgrade
13. apt-get install libc6-i686
14. Fixed /opt/bin/loadsfs with desktop icon for drag and drop.
15. Install parcellite with startup links in $HOME/Startup
16. Power button to shutdown computer and PrintScreen starting scrotdlg.
17. Include testing chrootin script in /opt/bin/special useful for full install.
18. Install new gsu and add group wheel and menu entry for activate/deactivate password prompt on shutdown for user account.
19. Yad-spalsh message - add in /usr/local/bin fo use with yad scripts in the future instead gtkdialog-splash. Download deb package here.
20. Remove cow-nosave, cow-save-part and cow-save-file from /opt/bin. The scripts are replaced from cowsave.
21. Flashplayerchoice, change-netmanager and some other scripts need fixing to work with new yad-gsu.
22. New gsu deb package with 3 different gsu scripts + debdognew.zip to extract in /opt/docs. Installing gsu will search for this file and use the correct gsu for older DD versions. This is compatibility solution for some scripts in old DD versions. New DebianDog packages should work with any older or remastered DD version.
23. Script for checking free space in save file and popup warning for less than 30Mb This number can be changed easy from the user. The script goes in /root/Startup, /home/puppy/Startup and /ets/skel/Startup
24. New save2flash and snapmergepuppy scripts.
25. For Jwm version only - adding MJWM as third menu method. Reads files for each user account from $HOME/.local/share/applications + option to configure reading desktop files from any other directory.
26. Some more improvements from Fred for apt2sfs and ffmpeg2sfs.
27: Small fix for debdog frugall installers.
28. yad-splash and gtkdialog-splash permission change in /tmp for multiuser - added in gtkdialog and yad-splash deb packages for reinstalling.
29. Fixes for full installer.
30. changes in some xterm depending scripts here, here.
31. Remove obshutdown and move 021-apps-porteus content in main 01-filesystem.squashfs module.
32. New gsu scripts to export /opt/lib and /usr/local/lib using sudo. - gsu deb package includes the new scripts. This is needed for portablesfs script but Fred is also modding portablesfs for better multiuser support - read here.
33. apt-get install deb-multimedia-keyring
34. apt-get install unionfs-fuse - needed for new portablesfs chroot option.
35. portablesfs-loadsfs-fuse deb package + right click options for rox, xfe, thunar loadsfs-fuse for DD full install

All available Squeeze squashfs modules work with the latest iso version.
