How to get HP DeskJet 5550 Printer to work?

#1 Post by kent41 »

In the printer Wizard it said to use pcl-900 for the driver for hp DeskJet 5550.
Next I went to xpdq printer management and selected add printer and filled in
driver questions (ijs-pcl-900 for hp-5550), interface (local-port), interface device
(/dev/usb/lp0), I have a usb printer. Printer name is "linux"

When I tried to print a TEXT file from geany I got the error message.
/root/.printjobs/001.interface_send: line 6: /dev/usb/lp0: no such device

Then I tried to print a .JPG file from the xpdq and got this message
don't know how to print this type of file:
JPEG image data, JFIF standard 1.01
Then I tried to print from inklite and it ask me to Select printer
and the options were
1-Create a PDF document
2-Generic Postscript
3-myprinter (via lpr)
which printer do I chose ? and where is my printer named "linux"

Is the solution I need to mount the linux printer if yes what would the command be ?

Thanks for any help
Kent :D

The default printer is set to use lp0 where it should be set as usb.

Go back to the printer wizard and redo it this time using usb then delete the previous steup, don't forget to make the new printer the default printer.

OK, when you redo the printer setup try using lp1 and see what happens.

I tried to print again from geany with lp0 and it printed the first line of the text file but did a carriage return and started printing on the second line in the middle of the line.

I also tried lp1 with no change.

also noticed when I printed from geany it said using /usr/bin/lpr /root/<filename>

I have a canon scanner working with puppy so a printer should not be that difficult do you think?

This same printer works with Ubuntu without problems

Ian Thanks for your help

UPDATE:

The EOF is send,

I found that ABIword seems to work and Leafpad seems to work on text.

It looks like Geany still prints in the middle of the page and only 2 lines no more. So I won't use Geany in puppy to print.

However I still need to print .jpg somehow any suggestions ?

The Puppy printer wizard uses the PDQ printing system. You might want to try CUPS which supports a wider range of printers. www.linuxprinting.org lists a compatible driver for your Deskjet 5500. Check out this thread:

Yep. Install The Gimp graphics program. It is a native Linux application that expects to print to a postscript device, so it should work straight away.

Cheers
