Viewnior: How can I start mtPaint using 'open with' menu

#1 Post by LaRioja »

Hello,
using Racy 5.4.2
I would like to be able to start mtPaint to edit the currently
shown picture in Viewnior using its menu-entry 'open with'.

The menu-entry just shows 'defaultimageviewer' and when I
select it, it opens a second instance of Viewnior with the same
image which is quite useless. I would like to have mtPaint there
or maybe another installed program.
I couldn't find a way to change the entries in the 'Open with'
menu of Viewnior. And I didn't find help on the web either.

How can I configure Viewnior this way?

Thank you for your help.

Hi LaRioja,

That is a good question. I know how to configure the Rox filer 'right click' menus and default actions, but can't figure out what sets the Viewnior "open with" menu.

There is a configuration at

/root/.config/viewnior/viewnior.conf

but I can't see any options for adding to the 'open with' option, or indeed, how it knows to add 'defaultimageviewer' (which is pointless as it just opens another viewnior window). One option is that 'open with' is written when viewnior is compiled.

Define the defaultimageviewer script to run mtpaint and create a new default script like defaultimgview and set this to viewnoir.

After this search in /root/Choices/MIME-types for image_xxx files and change defaultimageviewer to defaultimgview inside these MIME-type scripts.

Might be some manually work, but will work.

I did something like this to be able to click a .xcf file to run the RunScripts for the GIMP 1.6.12 SFS and load the Image after the SFS is loaded and GIMP runs.

As we in Germany say: nicht schön, aber selten. :D

Thank you. It works this way. But it is not elegant, I think.
Where does Viewnior get the information 'defaultimageviewer' from?
I don't think, that it is set at compile time. In Akita Linux (a small Puplet)
Viewnior has in it's 'Open with' (or german '

Which versio do you use?

I have version 1.1 installed. Menu "Open with" shows just "empty" in 1.1 - no entry "defaultimageviewer". So, I can't do what I've suggested.

1.1 has a direcctory in /usr/share containing two HTML/XML files (but just for the preferences and crop gui)

No way to edit something like "Open with" in 1.1.

An easy alternative method that can be used to edit anything displayed by Viewnior is to drag the image directly from the Viewnior window to the mtPaint icon on the desktop. The image will then open in mtPaint for editing. The same thing will work if you have an icon for the GIMP image editor on the desktop, or indeed any other application that is capable of opening an image. I have just tried dragging images from Viewnior to desktop icons for SeaMonkey, Firefox, AbiWord and LibreOffice Draw, and these all open the image as well (although, strangely, not InkscapeLite).

Incidentally, the same method can be used to copy an image file to another location. Drag an image from the Viewnior window to a directory (or a link to a directory, including a desktop icon) and the image file will be copied there.

I'm not sure if the OP is still around and interested in an answer, but it's an interesting question, so here it goes:
LaRioja wrote:Where does Viewnior get the information 'defaultimageviewer' from?
From the file /usr/share/applications/defaults.list
normally it should be possible to place more than one entry under
the menu item 'Open with...'. But how?
Must be done for each MIME type. Example for JPG/JPEG files:

In defaults.list file change

Code: Select all

image/jpeg=defaultimageviewer.desktop
to

Code: Select all

image/jpeg=mtpaint.desktop;defaultimageviewer.desktop
Note that the first item must be followed immediately by a semicolon and the second item. No spaces allowed.

run ln -s /usr/share/applications/defaults.list ~/.config/viewnior so you can remember, it doesn't seem to get overwritten
if you are missing the file, here is mine until i can find an actual download link to the sources

I try to set viewnior as shown above. Feed back soon.
Information should appear in graphics section. I find it very important. I have missed this function really until now.
