Comparison to Precise 5.7.1

#562 Post by Advnaser »

Hi all

After a few days of testing my conclusion is that TahrPup 5.8.4 is not as trouble-free as precise 5.7.1..

It's different when Barry does it. Nothing is salty as salt itself.

Your conclusion would be more beneficial, if you included why you believe it is not as trouble-free as precise5.7.1.

This may assist the developer to improve its sensation of saltiness.

Hello @Linux28.

When you initially booted your distro, did you, perhaps, ignore the FirstRUN screen designed to minimize this problem? Did you answer all questions appropriately?

Hope this is helpful

Hello, if there is no "restart graphical server" is all normal, but just click "restart graphical server", then the keyboard can not be used, menu configuration does not work

Thanks for the url.
But there's just one thing, the latest there says 2.5 and I think the TahrPup one says 2.7.
Are they really the same?

I'm on your 5.8.4 no pae puppy : thanks a lot for your work.
It's a Pentium M 1600 Mhz and everything seems to work. But my usb webcam, logitech c170, that works in skype does not work with guvcview ! This webcam works in other puppies with guvcview different versions. The window GUVCVideo is completely black.
Thanks,
Philippe
hi augras, is the webcam working in skype on tahrpup?

@linux28, Barry, and to all

The precise puppy, both Pemasu's and Barry's, have the file '/etc/gtk-2.0/gtk.immodules', but this file is meaningless. You can remove it.
Instead, you need to create new gtk.immodules at '/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/gtk.immodules'. Run on a viertual terminal.
Code:
# gtk-query-immodules-2.0 > /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/gtk.immodules

EDIT: precise puppy beta2 (5.2.60) has better fix. You need nothing to do with precise puppy beta2.
Code:
# gtk-query-immodules-2.0 > /etc/gtk-2.0/gtk.immodules
# ln -s /etc/gtk-2.0/gtk.immodules /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/gtk.immodules

The SCIM in lang_pack_ja worked on Pemasu's precise and on Barry's alpha-3 by the treatment above.
But on the beta-1, SCIM launches and can input KANA letters but fails to convert int KANJI letters. Pressing the space-bar to swithing the mode but does not work.
We are wondering what is the difference between precise alpha-3 and the beta-1. Rolling Eyes
Reverted all the contents under /usr/lib/gconv and got no difference.

Yes, the problem is only with guvcview !
And, it's an other question, i don't understand why the computer is faster with tahrpup 5.8.3 rc1 than with 5.8.4 : with 5.8.4 the harddisk is always run (frugal install)!

Tahr584 frugal install with savefile on fat32
With pfix=ram all works ok.

With pae version and a savefile audio stops working.
Sometimes keyboard and mouse cursor stop working.
If I use pfix=fsck then it seems to work ok.

Havent found these problems with the non pae version.

After using either version with a savefile and rebooting Windows7 always wants to scan the partition as it thinks something isnt right.

Precise and Slacko work ok.

Hi 666philb,
Tons of thanks for this !
have got a try on a pentium4 featured PC with 82845G-Brookdale video chip ... and got X displayed OK after the first restart X server without "black screen" :D

Any possibility to get tahr-5.8.4 coming with gnumeric-1.10.17 instead of 1.10.16?

Cheers, Charlie

Hi @Philh

I think that Win7 keeps a hash table and when he boots he uses that in an effort to insure that at desktop turnover, you have a set of filesystems Win7 thinks is clean. I seem to remember something that covers what you are witnessing on Win7 boot.

Check you FAT partition (drive letter) on Win desktop to see if your Linux files remain at Win7 desktop time. I believe they do.

Hope this help.

No sound here either, unfortunately; I'm running TahrPup 5.8.4 non-PAE live, and have an ICE1724 soundcard. Otherwise, it's working well (and it's good to be able to run PaleMoon on such an old machine as this one).

The following process worked for me:
Goto Menu->Setup->Multiple Sound Card Wizard
Click on the item that is the sound card you are using->OK
Should see, "Sound card now set as default:" 'hw:n' (mine is 'hw:1'), remember the 'n'.
Exit out of Retrovol

Right click 'Retrovol' in tray->Config Window->Hardware
Change 'hw:0' to match 'n' from above, (mine is 'hw:1')->Apply

Thanks, I'll try this suggestion the next time I use TahrPup.

Best,
