How to use WNA3100 USB WLAN adapter in Precise 7.5.1?

#1 Post by hanzf »

Hello,

I have a WinXP/Precise 7.5.1. dual boot machine, and a WNA3100 USB WLAN adapter that works in Windows.
I tried to install it in Puppy with Ndiswrapper and it works up to the network scan but does not connect to the Network. The error I get is:

Code: Select all

Wpa_supplicant failed to connect.
Verify that the password you entered is correct
and that your network card supports Wpa_supplicant.
this is how I installed it:

1. used Ndiswrapper and specified this file: /mnt/sda5/Programme/NETGEAR/WNA3100/Driver/WinXP2000/bcmwlhigh5.inf
(attached)
Ndiswrapper said:

Code: Select all

bcmwlhigh5: driver installed, device [0846:9020] present
I clicked "OK"

Code: Select all

driver has been loaded, that does not mean it will work
I clicked "OK"

tried to config the new interface wlan0 in "network wizard":
choosed "wlan0"
clicked "test wlan0"
result: not connected to a network
clicked "configure"
scanned for wireless networks, choosed the one i want
entered SSID
entered WPA2 password as "shared key"
clicked "save"
clicked "use this profile"
the config window came back and told me "you can proceed to aquire an ip adress".
clicked "auto DHCP"
"network configuration wlan0 successful!"
clicked "yes" to save

tried firefox -> no internet!

started "frisbee" setup tool.
entered password
frisbee said:

frisbee diagnostics is attached.

How can I fix this?

thanks

Hans

Hello Hans,

I have one of these WNA3100 USB adapters which luckily was very cheap at the time. Apparently there is no Linux driver for it so ndiswrapper is the only option and it doesn't always work very well. I had it working quite well with my previous router and wrote about it here:-
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=87123
but since my ISP sent me a new router it would disconnect much more frequently so I have stopped using it and replaced it with a different one which has a Linux driver.

I have been reading about it in various forums and it might be worth trying to see if you can change the WPA type from WPA2 to WPA (or from AES to TKIP or something) in your router. I also found that if you use the reboot option in the menu the adapter would not work. You have to shut down so the power supply to the adapter switches off completely for at least a few moments and then restart.

I too suggest change from WPA2 to WPA/TKIP in Network Manager.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

I own a Netgear WNA3100-100NAR adapter. Using PWF, I installed ndiswrapper and connected to a WPA2 access point. It worked fine.

Because you have been using other network managers, I would recommend a fresh Puppy install before trying PWF.
