I use and recommend the xfce4-battery-plugin-1.0.5.pet from the repo for battery monitoring in X-slacko. I want white text for the % and so far as I can tell, that can't be set from preferences etc. The code snippet below added to /root/.gtkrc-2.0 does that. A number of the other widgets can be removed but I left them in as examples. Apologies in advance if there is a simpler way to do this I haven't found.
Code:
style "gtk-theme-config-panel" {
    font_name = "Droid Sans 12"
   fg[NORMAL] = "#ffffff"
   fg[PRELIGHT] = "#ffffff"
   fg[SELECTED] = "#ffffff"
   fg[ACTIVE] = "#ffffff"
}

widget "*PanelWidget*" style "gtk-theme-config-panel"
widget "*PanelApplet*" style "gtk-theme-config-panel"
class "PanelApp*" style "gtk-theme-config-panel"
class "PanelToplevel*" style "gtk-theme-config-panel"
widget_class "*PanelToplevel*" style "gtk-theme-config-panel"
widget_class "*notif*" style "gtk-theme-config-panel"
widget_class "*Notif*" style "gtk-theme-config-panel"
widget_class "*Tray*" style "gtk-theme-config-panel"
widget_class "*tray*" style "gtk-theme-config-panel"
widget "*Xfce*Panel*" style "gtk-theme-config-panel"
class "*Xfce*Panel*" style "gtk-theme-config-panel"

I've completely rewritten pac-tools, it will now do multiple packages for all functions.

X-slacko-2.1 only needs pac-tools in /usr/bin, all others need unsquashfs3.4
X-precise-2.4 only needs pac-tools in /usr/bin, all others need unsquashfs3.4
Carolina-1.2 only needs pac-tools in /usr/bin, all others please check /usr/sbin for unsquashfs3.4.

If you downloads the *.gz, extract and right click and "Make Executible". Or, just download the .pet

Downloading X-Slacko 2.1 PAE now. I'll give it a try on the netbook first.

Much as I hate to admit it, there were things I liked about X-Slacko that are sorely missed in my current setup of Slacko 57 and MATE 181... I've always loved GNOME2 (and therefore MATE) but I have to admit that I like a lot of extra things in X-Slacko.

Just played around with X-Slacko 2.1 (PAE) a little. It feels a little faster on my netbook than X-Slacko 1.0 does.

Firefox complains of an obsolete version and downloads automatically a newer one. I didn't let that do its thing long enough to see if that would break it, but updates should probably be disabled from the get-go.

I like the new menu Wink but it needs a bit more flair to it, it looks like it's done in GTK1. The usual dearth of pretty wallpapers is present as well, but I've long since figured out how to deal with that Wink

Netbook is an upgraded ASUS EeePC 1000HE.
Atom N270 CPU
Intel i945 chipset (one of many in that series...)
2gig RAM
64gig SSD
Atheros WiFi card (uses ath9k driver)

Was using my external CD drive, which is a Thinkpad CD-R/RW / DVD-ROM (Combo) drive in an eBay-provided external enclosure. It's not that great but it's functional...

Happy, happy, happy!

A few post back I reported about having wifi problem with the new slacko built puppies. I was sad and thought that I can no longer use the newer slacko puppies. I was preparing myself to settle for x-precise 2.4 (which is by itself more than excellent - almost the best I have ever used).

Suddenly, I decided to download x-slacko 2.1 and give it one more try.

To my surprise, my MSI U270 AMD netbook's wifi worked out of the box.

Now, I am using frugal install x-slacko 2.1 most of the time.

Softwares that works well so far are :

Virtualbox 4.3.12 (very fast and smooth)
SMplayer 14.3.0 (runs very well)
Thunar 1.6.3
Chromium Version 36.0.1985.125
Inkscape lite 0.36

Thank you rg66

Puppies I have tried : many including legendary saluki 0.23, Lupu collections, Fatdog64 - all are great in their own ways.

My personal all-time favourite : X-PRECISE / X-SLACKO! period.

In Fatdog64, what i like is I could use my mouse tilt wheel and do horizontal scrolling easily. It is also very easy to get the bluetooth and Samba file share working.

I wish someone can show me how to get these features working in X-puppies collections. I think I managed to configure the samba file sharing a little bit but not fully yet.

Nicely done, rg66! I've installed 2.1 on my main box, and I like it. (Screenshots in the "My Puppy is more gorgeous..." thread.)

One thing -- I downloaded "X-slacko-2.1.iso", thinking that it had PAE built in, but my system only detects 2975MB out of the 4096MB installed. I know that some of that is graphics memory (I'm using integrated graphics in this system, as I neither have nor need a dedicated card), but it seems a little short for PAE to be working. Should I have downloaded "X-Slacko-2.1n.iso" instead...?

Also, please do let me know if you ever cook up a MATE-based Slacko remix. I was using Slacko 57 with jejy69's MATE 181 SFS for a while, but there's a ton of little things in your X-Slacko Pups that are not in the mainline Pup that I just couldn't leave behind. I'd absolutely LOVE to see everything from X-Slacko 2.1 in a MATE flavor -- and since XFCE has always been about as 'heavy' as GNOME2 (of which MATE is of course a fork/continuation) there wouldn't even be much if any performance penalty...

@ pchan

Glad you like the X-puppies. File sharing in X-slacko is easy, right click on a directory and choose Share this folder and give it a share name.

For bluetooth see this post: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=786061#786061

Not sure about the scroll wheel though.

@ starhawk

If firefox is complaining about an old version my guess is you were using a 1.1 savefile.

You downloaded the right ISO, X-Slacko-2.1n is the non-pae version. Mine shows 4GB RAM

Code:
# free
             total         used         free       shared      buffers
Mem:       4113096       985568      3127528            0        72428
-/+ buffers:             913140      3199956
Swap:            0            0            0

I tried jejy69's MATE 181 SFS and it seemed to work ok but never really played with it too much. I can't seem to find it so will have to download it again and play some more. If I like it I might do a Mate version but I'm on a break right now so no major projects at the moment.

Rebuilt my savefile when I installed.

Code:
# free
             total         used         free       shared      buffers
Mem:       2975680      1757880      1217800            0        77308
-/+ buffers:            1680572      1295108
Swap:            0            0            0

MD5Sum of the ISO I downloaded (I archive them) matches the one on your site. System should be PAE-compatible, it's the setup in my sig -- an HP MOCA-AR Mini-ITX mobile-on-desktop board, a T7200 Core2Duo CPU (Socket 479/M), four gigs of RAM (known working), and an ADATA 256gb SSD.

Accoring to HP's website the MOCA-AR only supports 2GB RAM, apparently yours supports 3GB.

HP is a big fat liar, and lazy at that. The chipset (i945GM) supports four gig. The only way to really change that is to limit it in the BIOS -- which HP very obviously (at least to me) did not do. In fact, I've encountered exactly one system ever which had such a limitation -- a Dell P4 laptop where the graphics messed up if you gave it more than a gig of RAM. I thought that was both remarkably odd and remarkably stupid.

Besides, I've booted other Pups on this system that recognize four gig just fine -- and I can guarantee that none of them are 64bit Pups.

Therefore, PAE is not enabled, and the system is running at 3.25gb RAM minus what the graphics steals.
