Please report whatever you find, and hopefully the 'responsible' will respond. Woof-CE does not include 'everything'.

Grabbed another old box off the shelf and did a quick manual frugal install. Everything appears good so far.

Mick, for consideration...

I compiled the latest ROX-Filer directly in 5.9.3 so GTK versions match.
The main reason is that this version has fixed a very annoying bug, when after entering /proc directory with Thumbnails enabled, the entire ROX just totally freezes.

Applied patches ("ours"):
1. http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02053 ("Run as root" & "Send To -> Open With")
2. http://bkhome.org/sources/alphabetical/ ... ings.patch
3. http://bkhome.org/sources/alphabetical/ ... umns.patch

Note: this patch is already in the upstream sources.

However, I deliberately removed the "overwrite" patch - after second thoughts it doesn't seem to me as a good solution.
It's more like replacing one extreme (ask for each and every file) with another (don't ask at all and overwrite everything).
Not to mention about inconsistency - the patch applies only to "Copy" action, but leaves "Move" acting the old way.
In my opinion such a behavior brings more confusion than actual benefits.

I also finally changed the default action (defaultpaint -> defaultimageviewer) for image_bmp, image_svg, image_svg+xml and image_tiff filetypes.
Plus new one: image_x-icns.

I used this package as a base:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... 7-i686.pet
and replaced only the main binary (ROX-Filer) + the above MIME-Types.
Rest of files is unchanged.

Download from: http://www.datafilehost.com/d/eb1ff590
MD5: 99c9a7455af082a1e09a5d886e565821 rox_filer-140729.pet
SHA1: 06c316e0fc9bdf34cbc4652405c51859870bfb9f rox_filer-140729.pet

EDIT: Same as above, but includes the "overwrite" patch:
Download from: http://www.datafilehost.com/d/cef10e43
MD5: 1dc481d1027e1e07700929239ac1ceef rox_filer-140729_overwrite_patch.pet
SHA1: 3ed771476e2826c187355acd7f56b465d179ea09 rox_filer-140729_overwrite_patch.pet

Both pets are xz compressed.

Greetings!

01micko,

Something to consider:

All Puppy Developer's could Consider This Guideline

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

This test version of Slacko doesn't have PAE, which allows access to all of your memory when the CPU is in 32-Bit mode.

??? The patch works (almost) perfectly and "don't ask at all" applies only when you select Options > Action windows > Autostart (Quiet) these actions [X] Copy. That's exactly how it is meant to be. If you don't like this, you can unselect it and confirm every single copy
Not to mention about inconsistency - the patch applies only to "Copy" action, but leaves "Move" acting the old way.

Correct. Move still asks for overwrite confirmation for every file it is going to overwrite in the target destination. Not nice, but I suspect that move & overwrite is far less common than copy & overwrite. Moreover there is an easy work around: Copy to target first, then delete source files. Both Copy and Delete can be qieted. For the current Copy bug there is no easy work around and the prospect of having to confirm 100 overwrite actions without a way out is the worst option I can think of. I really would appreciate if you could reconsider.

Well done (again), James.
Does it run on that machine if you remove half the mem?
There seems to be a misunderstanding amongst some of the recent Forum joiners. Puppy is a compact distro. It was never intended to run on the latest HW, although mostly it will, esp. if PAE enabled. Notwithstanding it's those accursed mobile Intel chips that regularly cause most grief. At this time, success might be judged if running a D1200 (clocked is better) in 256Mb (although we reckoned 192 was often OK). Particularly with Slackware-based Slacko versions, it's important to retain as much backwards compatibility with ancient kit which abounds in many nations around the globe, thus preserving the prime objectives of economy and land-fill avoidance. Folks who run 6MB on quad-core machines probably have no issues with funds, probably run a smart mobile in Android and some aren't always concerned with the planet.

MochiMoppel wrote:The patch works (almost) perfectly
In my understanding (near to) perfect would be e.g.:
If destination file/folder exists - ask to Overwrite|Overwrite_all|Skip|Skip_all (+ optional) Auto-Rename|Auto-Rename_all.
This is exactly how it works in SpaceFM. Similarily in PCManFM, Caja, MC and in Windows IIRC.

My point is: power users like us know what we're doing and how ROX works with all its quirks, but just imagine a refugee from another OS that is accustomed to the above, "worldwide" behavior.
Result - unwanted overwrites all the time.
Even if the "Auto-start (quiet)" for "Copy" is unticked it might still not be clear for a newcomer whether "Quiet" button refers only to copying as such or also to overwriting, especially since in such a case the "action window" appears every time, even if there's nothing to overwrite.
That's why I believe the old way is lesser of two evils as default, even if privately I prefer the "never ask" alternative...
MochiMoppel wrote:I really would appreciate if you could reconsider.
I just attached the version with "overwrite patch" enabled to my previous post.
But it's not up to me, it's entirely Mick's decision whether patched, unpatched or none of them gets chosen...

Anyway, I'm curious what others think about it?
On the other thread 666philb and Stemsee were rather enthusiastic, so let's say we have 3-1 for "overwrite" at the moment.

Don't know how much important it really is, but since Slacko-5.6 (newer ffmpeg was introduced there IIRC) onward:

Code: Select all

# x264
x264: error while loading shared libraries: libavformat.so.54: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
#
Is this binary (x264, not libx264) used by anything at all? If not we could save 1.3 MiB.

new versions of Precord and also pAVrecord uploaded. Now version 9.0.3

Changes: hijack module capability expanded. Now using .hijack as addon module extension. I'll be modifying/uploading DoMyFIle, DoMyCommand/Premote similarly in the next couple of days (EDIT: now done).

Download the new versions from:

Runs but naturally slower.

I normally only use 256 mb in that box......Lucid,Wary and Lucid Retro.....but went to 512 just to try Slacko. Reverted back to 256 mb (2x128) and Slacko was slower but usable.

In case you missed it, tested on a 733 mhz/256 mb box too...

new versions 9.0.3 Premote and DoMyFile uploaded

#556 Post by mcewanw »

New versions of Premote and DoMyFile uploaded. For my convenience, bumped to versions 9.0.3 as per Precord. Downloads:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 466#651466

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 246#790246

Changes: hijack modules now use .hijack as file extension.

Note: Premote and DoMyFile also includes same "hijack" capability as pAVrecord and Precord, which allows you to add your own bottom panel (buttons to activate other apps etc) to the GUI, as a simple addon module. The hijack facility is as described for pAVrecord here:

x264
Removal runs the risk that some app will break causing user report on the forum and forum support requirement. No system performance impact currently: Only its presence, as most commands are.

I have never used it, though. Seems potentially a camera utility.

Yet another new version (9.0.4) of pAVrecord uploaded.

#558 Post by mcewanw »

Yet another new version (9.0.4) of pAVrecord uploaded. Hopefully fixes the vlc/avconv related bug drawn to my attention by user Saborima, who was testing previous version in tahrpup (which uses vlc/avconv rather than mplayer/ffmpeg). It only effected machines using avconv (which would hang on record) rather than ffmpeg as it turns out. Download:

Legacy Grub 2013 is broken in Slacko 6 beta and Slacko 5.7 for full installs. It mistakenly inputs the code for frugal into the menu.lst. See here:

My K6-2 system had 256MB when I got it, I think I was running Lupu 5.0.1 back then. The Pentium D and K6-2 ran the same version of Puppy right up to Lupu 5.2.5 although 5.1.1 was the last version where everything ran out of the box on the K6-2.

The K6-2 is still going strong, I use it every day. It's now running Wary 5.5, the last mainstream Puppy that loaded on it was a Slacko, may have been 5.3.1. Out of curiosity I tried Slacko 5.9.3 on it the other day and it halts with an error about the lack of the cmov instruction.

The Pentium D setup, Merlin III, will have a major upgrade in the next month or so as the parents have said they'll pay up to 500 pounds - it's long overdue.
