Rebuild the kernel inside tahr puppy. The problem is a gcc mismatch and is exactly what I did with the first Lucid pup; just recompiled a quirky kernel with the exact same .config. Use kernel-kit from woof-CE. Then you won't have troubles building modules. You could probably even bump to the latest 3.10.x kernel with minimal trouble (or not, no guarantees ;) )

As for cups, use BK's wary package. It's older but reliable. It's version 1.4.8 IIRC.

I compiled dillo 3.0.4 and it's working okay.

Thanks for your hard work.

Hi 666philb

Looking good - frugal install booted AOK on my HP550 laptop with Intel graphics.

Frisbee and Broadcom WL established wifi no problems.

Did I test of dir2pet - seemed to work OK (although I didn't actually install the resulting pet) - what problems were you seeing?

01micko seems to have pointed the way to making this work perfectly - you may want to make your thread subject a bit more upbeat and positive to attract more testers....

I'd be happy to compile the wl driver for you for a different kernel if you can make the devx and kernel source sfs available.

Cheers & congrats on progress so far

Hi, 666philb and all!

Your tahrpup working fine here! (See pic.) No problem at all creating the pupsave file.

One may deplore the inclusion of the older abiword 2.8.6, but that's about it on the
negative side.

Except, if I may say so, the wallpapers offered are definitely ugly! :) But it's very easy
to beautify your tahrpup:

http://www.itworld.com/operating-system ... wallpapers
has links to the ubuntu tahr's wallpaper contest.

I'll still be on the look-out for the problems you mentioned in your first post, but as far
as I can tell: very good work, 666philb! Congratulations! :D

thanks for all the replys and for testing....
new iso,kernel-src & devx posted still some problems but seems a saner build

01micko i followed your advise and rebuit the kernel in tahr puppy, still neither the wl driver or amd will compile. The nvidia driver compiles fine and now doesn't kill sound and internet after rebooting which is good.
i installed the cups you suggested and cups now gets further however won't recognize my printer even after installing the hp drivers.

could other people see if printing works for them.

billtoo ... firefox works for me from the repo's ... qupzilla need libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-0 will include it eventually

peebee... i still can't get the wl driver to compile hopefully you'll have more luck! .... but i noticed an odd thing, my netbook uses the wl driver and i was testing the new iso before i remastered it... and it showed a wlan interface and got online using the 'brcmsmac' driver. This loaded automatically before remastering, but didn't after. and loading it manually caused some odd effects... must conflict with something. still nice to know it works instead of wl.

and about the topic title... someone altered it after i posted!

ally .. perhaps you should wait on archiving them until they work properly :)

musher... that abiword pet is just installed as a place holder .... if i can get this puppy working properly i'll include more upto date versions

AMD driver is a real bitch. I haven't done it in awhile but take a look at https://github.com/kolasa for patches. Also, if you search the Dpup-385 thread (pemasu) I did write an automated script to patch the AMD driver from the kolasa git repo and build a pet. It will be somewhat dated now.

As for broadcom wl, peebee has put the offer out there; take it.

Good luck!

New manual frugal install:

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Sat 31 May 2014 on TahrPup 5.8.0.7 Linux 3.12.2 i686

I installed kdegames, firefox, lxterminal, qupzilla, and others from PPM.
Firefox gives an error when it's started, kdegames isn't working giving
an error about dbus as well.
Dillo is working fine.

The jwm config is missing, resize savefile isn't working, and getflash
is missing.

I think this will be a great pup once you do any fixes that are
needed, many of the latest applications are available in PPM.

Thanks for your work.

FWIW, did manual frugal installs of both versions on a AMD dual-core box.....identical kernel panics.

Moved to this old P4 and the latest version appears to have all the basics working.

Pretty good effort.

Code: Select all

# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: TahrPup, version 5.8.0.7

Chip description:
VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS780L [Radeon 3000]

Modules requested to be loaded: dbe
Drivers requested to be loaded: modesetting

Probing Xorg startup log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log):
Driver loaded (and currently in use): modesetting
Loaded modules: dbe extmod fb glx kbd mouse shadow

Actual rendering on monitor:
  Resolution: 1366x768 pixels (361x203 millimeters)
  Depth: 24 planes

...the above also recorded in /tmp/report-video

Code: Select all

# uname -r
3.12.2

Code: Select all

# find /usr/lib/xorg -name radeon_drv.so
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so
# ldd /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so|grep -iE not
	libglamor.so.0 => not found
So libglamor is missing hampering radeon xorg driver. That's ok because modesetting driver works ok for unaccelerated. I notice vesa wasn't offered either, I didn't check for it's existence.

Sound and net work ootb for me on my main box.(dual core athlon X2, radeon 3000 onboard, 4GB RAM)

More as time permits.

LATER......

I did a quick and dirty remaster after cracking open libglamor0_0.6.0-0ubuntu4_i386.deb and moving /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/{libglamor.so.0,libglamor.so.0.0.0} into /usr/lib in the root of the unsquashed main sfs and resquashed. Booted the thing and got straight to desktop

Code: Select all

# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: TahrPup, version 5.8.0.7

Chip description:

Actual rendering on monitor:
  Resolution: 1366x768 pixels (361x203 millimeters)
  Depth: 24 planes

...the above also recorded in /tmp/report-video
Shows ati driver loaded which is fine.. somwhere they switched those over the past couple of years. I think radeon just supports older (or is it newer?) cards now.

Code: Select all

# glxgears

ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
4545 frames in 5.0 seconds = 908.376 FPS
4454 frames in 5.0 seconds = 890.785 FPS
4805 frames in 5.0 seconds = 960.823 FPS
4489 frames in 5.0 seconds = 897.798 FPS
4908 frames in 5.0 seconds = 981.490 FPS
4671 frames in 5.0 seconds = 934.146 FPS
Acceleration seems to work.. Nexuiz 2.5.2 works :)

I deleted my savefile and started fresh:

I opened PPM and installed kdegames, it wanted udev-136-w5.pet but it
couldn't download it so I downloaded and installed
udev-136-w5.pet,udev_DEV-136-w5.pet,and udev_DOC-136-w5.pet from the
Quirky packages common repo on ibiblio.
After they were installed I entered kdegames in PPM and downloaded all
the files that it needed but at the end it still needed a file named
virtodb... so I entered that and got it in PPM as well.
Kdegames is working now..I wonder if the missing udev-136-w5.pet was
causing problems with some of the other applications from my earlier
savefile.
I'll back this new savefile up now and try installing more
applications.
EDIT:
I installed Firefox from PPM and it works fine as does Palemoon, but if you run Quicksetup first run settings and chose to run internet apps as spot, both Firefox and Palemoon give an error when they are started (the firefox error sceenshot that I posted earlier).
EDIT2:
Firefox and Palemoon are giving the error again, kdegames has quit working too, so the dbus problem continues on the install that was working the next time it's booted up.

Chromium35with pepperflash works if I add this link:

Code: Select all

ln -s /lib/libudev.so.1.3.0 /lib/libudev.so.0
except for the maximise button when using Chromium's in-built window manager.

The JWM Configuration Manager seems to be missing....

Nice work Phil, I think this is going to be good!

I tried printing in Abiword and Geany and programs crashed (shut down). I tried in PeasyPrint and it worked. I tried:

Code: Select all

lp -d Brother_HL-1435_series /root/zdrv_test
(this is a network printer) at the command prompt and it worked. I figured the problem must be with the gtk printing dialog that opens in Abiword, Geany, etc. So I replaced the contents of /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/printbackends/ with the same files from PuppyPrecise and, it worked! :D I can now print from Abiword, Geany, etc.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers, J

Edit: I'm not using a save file so I made the change in an adrv file, thanks for including that btw. Now I'm having to run through the setup dialogs at boot. No idea why. But printing still works. :D

Regular pfix=ram boot results in no graphical display and inability to get to xorgwizard.Hard poweroff.

Changing boot to pfix=ram, nox and manually choosing the nouveau driver achieves the correct screen resolution. Will try another frugal install now.
