Suggestions for USB Wireless adapters with Wary?

I am running Wary 5.5, full install, on a very old Toshiba Tecra-8000 and it runs pretty damn well.

This old laptop has no Ethernet port or Wi-Fi built in so I am looking at USB wireless adapters.

Tried a Buffalo WLI-UC-GNHP but apparently there is no driver in Wary for this device.

Hoping someone could point me to something tried and tested and yes, I am very new to Linux.

I honestly would say to go with something that is supported by FOSS drivers, but i think there is no such thing. I believe wifi is overrated anyways (and I know it is very insecure).

Thanks - no real luck there as everything keeps pointing back to the 2800usb driver that is included in my install.

The problem with this laptop is there is no wired port (that is how old it is) but it still runs Puppy great. So I have to use either a USB or one of the old PCMCIA cards or whatever they were called.

yeah that one never seems to work...just had the same in slax 7 lol..

foss crap unfortunately that has poor support....never understand why the geeks reject companies who DO offer linux support ...eg nvidia
Don't bite the hands that are feeding you.... might be smart bunnies but NO common sense.

So its a realtek inside...you need their STA drivers... they work perfectly...they give you the sources you can build yourself or more than likely there is a built driver on this forum..
More details of the card in question would help .... mine was RT2070 .... so look out for a name like that.

Thanks for the advice.

I guess being new to Linux ... I am even more so behind the curve to speak ... but it's something I do want to pursue in my spare time.

I know some Linux distros can be as resource intensive as say Windows but I love the idea of being able to revive old hardware with a very functional OS and play around.

The Netis WF-2111 USB dongle is under $10. I got it working on Wary 5.1.4.1 on an old Win98-era laptop, and VictorVictor5 got it working on Wary 5.3. Have a look here:

Unfortunately my driver for Wary 5.1.4.1 won't work for you on 5.5, but at least it shows it can be done.

Ok just for anyone who might have similar problems.

The rt2070 in question works perfectly well under linux AS LONG AS you have not previously run windows and only done a reboot rather than a shutdown/restart.

Seems the windows driver buggers it up for linux use and only a poweroff clears it... it connects but then disconnects soon after or is generally flaky....nice one bill.

Might be one to consider if you get a dongle that has you tearing your remaining hair out.
