Sub_title: Wifi connectivity with Tecra M5

I was doing a monthly boot up via USB with Akita(beta 14 I believe) and I got connected on my first try at work(WPA2 with Dougal's network wizard). I tried for a week to do it with Akita beta 16 and Partsman's version as well but both wouldn't hook up to my works WPA2 connection no matter what I tried but once I went to the older beta14, it hooked just fine.

My wireless hookup controller is an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG(Golan) rev. 02 FYI. Any ideas why the older Akita beta worked but the newer one's didn't?

No idea why that would be... Could go back over the changelogs, see what i changed/updated related to networking between those versions.. i always post the full changelogs... but i dont *think* i changed anything..

Sorry about the late (and useless response!)..

Sub_title: Partsmans's Akita 14 with 2.6.32.28 kernel

Well Partsman Akita14 version with the 2.6.32.28 kernel hooked up just fine with the secure wifi at work first time. My Toshiba Tecra M5 didn't like Chrome 7 in this version at all. Seamonkey 2.0.x and Firefox 13 are both crashy. Firefox 17ESR works fine QTWeb works fairly well, too but slower to load Flash heavy stuff like YouTube.

@LoboGrande
Glad that at leased you was able to get a wifi connection Very Happy
The browsers are another issue but not limited to Akita ! Reading through the forums everyone struggles or gives pref. of diff. browsers Personally I
prefer seamonkey !
But I think you would agree Akita 14 did not have the wireless issues we have seen in b15 and up ! Would you agree ?
I am not sure what is diff Confused But maybe sc0ttman does Confused
I love the new package manger in b16 but the wifi prob is forcing me back to b14 Confused I hope to see a diff in B17 release Very Happy

speaking of browsers netsurf-3.1 was recently released with more javascript support - it may be able to start weanin us off the heavy multi-megabyte browsers. (note you have to specifically enable js support @ build time still)

Sub_title: Slimboat 1.1.44-wary pet works under Akita

I was looking for a faster browser for Akita with my Tecra M5 laptop and found that there was a -wary. pet version. So I downloaded it and gave it whirl. Works great so far.

PostPosted: Thu 05 Jun 2014, 19:00    Post_subject: Problems i detected in Akita 16
Sub_title: Some problems i hope can resolve in the next version

Hello,

I am a long user of Puppy in general, and in particular puppy arcade (The old version) and Akita.

Now, started using Akita 16.

I would like to make some comments about thinks that seems not working well enough:
- Required internet connection to install packages (I already red a post about this, just want to resume all problems that i detected)
- Problems with Pmount. I can not open it, and puppy is not detecting some of my external memories. Try fastmount, and also cannot mount them. For example and old mp3 that i use like flash memory. Other version of puppy detect it without problem (Puppy 2,14)
- Shell command "less" it seems is not working normally.
- Midori close sometimes unexpectly.

I am far to be a linux or puppy expert, just and old user, but i have some free time, so if i can help with something let me know.

I like akita very much, because speed and because all the options that give with the right button of the mouse.

Best regards

Arguser

Hi Arguser,

the pkg manager can be edited, to change to net connection requirement... I posted how to earlier in this thread somewhere... Essentially you open /usr/sbin/pkg and edit the net_connect func (I think) ... Search for 'ping', or 8.8.8.8 and you'll find the code you need.. Just swap the return values so it always reports a net connection was successful..

I also posted a fixed/updated pmount earlier in this thread too.. The default one won't open unless you have exFAT partitions installed/connected (if I remember correctly)...

The 'less' command appears weird as unlike most other puppies, Akita uses the full less command.. Which is a bit different..

Yeah, midori sometimes crashes.. Maybe try Slimboat, as suggested by Argolance.. It apparently works well.. And it is also lightweight.
