I installed DebianDog but I can figure out how to get it to save changes.

I made a save file.

Hi fixit; I suppose it`s okay to ask DebianDog Qs here. But it`s not a Puppy derivative.
Probably best to ask Qs in the DebianDog-Beta thread.

DebianDog is the Debian Live distro. that is modified to look and work like Puppy.

You don`t say what your setup is, PC type, partitions, how you`re booting, etc.
The Save file "live-rw" should be found if it`s in the root of any partition on any drive.

DebianDog can change a preservation method by changing a file of the boot loader.
When it is Wheezy live-boot that sunburnt shows and will have initrd.img or initrg1.img as a file to appoint in initid of the boot (Grub).

Alternatively, there is a procedure of Debian-PorteusDog Wheezy, and any place can save it without using a partition.
Please appoint initrd1.xz in boot to realize this method.

The details refer to follows:

The associated topic, please take a look. Here will be an answer to find:

Thank you, Terry, Balloon.

To all interested after reading this post:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=771571#771571
any questions is better to be posted there.
You will find save file 1Gb for easy download and use in the link.

DebianDog is not Puppy but pure Debian.
It has 3 boot methods and different save file options for each boot method.

DebianDog special utilities thread with pictures also may become useful:
