Hi step,
Thanks for your reports. Your testing has revealed previously unreported problems which have been shown up by SP1 but are in fact due to flaws in a couple of the original scripts. Basically I failed to cater for all possibilities and need to find alternate ways of doing some things.
SP1 itself is sound but I need to fix some of the scripts that it calls. I will look at them and hopefully will issue a fix in the form of a compulsory service pack in a few days time.
We are now getting down to the nitty-gritty.

Moving service to running BLUE users not connected to forum |
|
Hi @ETP. Awhile back, @BarryK developed a way for system service, like "bluepup-sp1", to be pushed to facilitate a system upgrade. (Of course, the user must exercise to allow it to continue installation)
Does QT/BLUE have that same mechanism builtin? Could that be a way to move service to BLUE users, while still offering service explanation for understanding in the thread?
Hope this helps

Hi gcmartin,
From the screen shot below you only use multi-session-CD/DVD and I personally do not even begin to understand your comment above.
Also, since multi-session is your principal interest; how is your promised multi-session-manual coming along?
My regards

Don't know if it will help anyone preparing a stick for Blue pup, but there is an interesting thread concerning Gparted and formatting here:

Hi @Jasper
BLUE and QuirkyTahr (QT) are not ISO supported nor are they multi-sessioned as is found with CD/DVD PUPs and Frugal PUPs.
BLUE and QT are ONLY "full" install distros whose life begins as a full-install USB or a full-install HDD.
Save-sessions have no place and are not a part of full-install systems.
Hope this is helpful

I think that I see what you are getting at here. QT does include that alert when PPM is launched and as a menu item. Any service pack is placed on Ibiblio by BK.
For Blue, possibly being used by non-forum members new to Linux, I would favour a pop-up alert drawn off Google Drive. It is not a high priority however.

That is not quite so. The snapshot/restore facility is its equivalent.
www.bkhome.org/news/?viewDetailed=00034
Also as Billtoo pointed out a couple of posts back it is possible to export all your apps to another copy of Blue or QT.

Quote: | The snapshot/restore facility is its equivalent | Yes @ETP. I'm an ole guy from wayback in the days before DOS. RATHER, Snapshot/Restore is a backup service which I have used many times for my PUPs. But, this is fundamentally different in implementation from save-session which is aimed for CD-DVD-frugal use. There is no boot-time feature builtin where user can interrupt to choose RAM only or select which session one wants eliminated as system boots., etc. This is because the save-session(s) and the base PUP are distinctly separate items; whereas the full-install does not carry that concept.
Until either QT/BLUE chooses to add this structure in or change the underlying workings of the full-install system, "save-session" as is known in frugal-DVD is non existent as a subsystem in QT. (This is not a request for I completely understand advantages that full install provides use)
Stepping aside from save-session and returning to Snapshot/Restore, the USB stick (or the system HDD) should be a part of good user behavior to protect oUr running OS. Snapshot/Restore, I think, is one of the things we, as users, must do for our OSes and especially the data/information/media we create/use/maintain on the system we run.
Thusly too, @BillToo's implementation has some very distinct advantages for incorporation & use.

I would like to know the inner workings of Zram and wondered if that feature was included in a full install, if it would minimize writes to a Flash drive.
The os with files would be loaded into Zram as a compressed image and the directory and menus items would be links to expand an application while it was being used and discarded afterward.
But I could be called crazy thinking that.
Being Old School, I still remember when one could use executable zip files that would expand when used and be removed when finished.
There was a utility called Zip2exe that would convert a normal zipped application into one that would expand and open when used/clicked on.
Also, on the subject of installing Blue Pup to a partition on my hard drive, with all the frugal installs of various Puppys on a few partitions and sharing some directories from /mnt/home with each at this point I am not ready to do a hard drive install.
I did make an SFS of the contents of the f2fs partition though that I can open with most Puppy versions.

Hi rameshiyer,
Details can be found in these two posts:
www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=763231#763231
www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=770389#770389
If you intend to shrink a Windows NTFS partition it is highly advisable that you first:
A. Do a full hard disc check in Windows followed by a defrag.
B. Backup your whole drive before using Gparted to shrink & then create your new f2fs partition.

NEW OPTIONAL PET Subject description: (petalert-mk1.pet) |
|
This is an optional dotpet for all versions of Blue Pup. In QT 6 BarryK introduced a feature to check for new service packs. The check could be selected as a menu item or was carried out automatically if PPM was launched.
This pet checks automatically for new pets or service packs at each boot-up without any user intervention.
If either of the above is available an audible and a visual alert will be triggered.
For testing purposes the server based trigger is currently turned on.
The pet (petalert-mk1.pet) can be found here:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B_iVVJCd9q09cTFfNnhaR2QybFk&usp=sharing
Please let me know if this .pet performs as expected. Test by re-starting X.

service available for BLUE PUP |
|
I installed the PET to my BLUE on USB. I restarted X. After a short period, while on desktop, I got a pop-up message indicating there exist a "service" on the forum, without specifying where.
Question
Should the PPM be used after the pop-up? Or, how should one proceed after viewing the popup?
Thanks in advance
